The Seagreen wind farm in the windy North Sea waters off Scotland begins production this week. It is a 3 billion pound project of SSE Renewables and TotalEnergies of France located 17 miles off the Angus Coast of eastern Scotland. Production is 1.1 gigawatts of electricity in the first phase enough to power 1 million homes. It is the world's deepest fixed bottom windfarm- the deepest foundation to be installed in December will be 59 metres below sea level. 

Its location near the old oil and gas capital of Aberdeen, Scotland, shows how the renewable energies acceleration is giving a new life to the region. Seagreen uses new renewables technology because of the rocky difficult conditions in the North Sea. SSE Renewables is a London based company that has $12.5 billion in investments in renewable energy.

With the pandemic the situation is changing and offers new hope. In rural parts of Galicia, Spain, small towns are seeing some revival with enough children now in schools to keep them running. People from cities are moving to smaller towns and rural areas during the pandemic. The housing transactions in smaller towns and rural areas are up by 15% in Spain in 2020.

Kristof of the NYT says about American unions that the basic reality is that with the decline of trade unions in the last two decades workers got stiffed. The wages of new auto workers at $17 an hour dropped to levels close to the minimum wage of $16 in California in 2022. At $34,000 a year these workers were below the Federal Poverty Level for families of $35,000 to $40,000. Workers lost dignity and standards of living declined. After 15 years of covering the crisis of America's working class he says he lost his disdain for unions, and he has come to believe that unions are not just good for the workers but also for America itself. NHK shows that over her 16 years as chancellor in Germany Merkel conducted policy that built the overconcentration of trade and investment in China. This policy is now seen as posing serious risks for Germany now that lessons are being learned from the failure of the overconcentration of investment and dependence on fossil fuel supplies from Russia, a policy pursued by Merkel. It was  the deputy chancellor Habeck as Energy Minister who did the remarkable job of getting new supplies from other countries to replace Russian oil and gas. This made it possible for Germany to make it through the winter without supplies from Russia. Germany is now shifting away from this overconcentration in its supply chain in the new security strategy. This may only be the beginning of a larger change in Germany's policies.

Fair taxation is key, a strong economy is key for Biden. Fair taxation supports trillions in public investment that in turn generate private investment. In the second quarter of 2023 business investment was up 56% in Biden America, about $1 trillion with more in the pipeline.  The Conservatives fail on both and have no plan for step by step action that fits needs and opportunities in the economy as Biden has. Getting equal share of the fruits of labour to all Britons is never going to happen under trickle down economics of the Trump or Tory kind. That much is clear as daylight.

Other cities that are in top ten include Zurich and Geneva ranked fourth and fifth followed by Seoul, Tokyo. Israel's Tel Aviv entered top ten for first time. Lindner met with senior FDP leaders in Potsdam to plan breaking away from the Scholz government 2 months before it happened on November 5. Lindner was fired that day by Scholz after making unacceptable demands including scrapping climate action targets, and reducing investments in infrastructure. The supplementary budget passed by Scholz was to reidirect 60 billion euros of unspend Covid money to needed infrastructure and climate action projects. The German Constitutional Court declared it unconstitutional. 

The FDP is polling 4% which means it is headed to the situation a decade back where it had no seats in parliament. Which explains Lindner's actions seen as a betrayal by the Scholz government. The greens had advocated investment 4 years back which never happened because of Lindner and FDP opposition hurting the German economy's resilience.

The great university of ancient Buddhist India is located at Rajgir, Bihar. Nalanda University was built in 5th century AD and was the largest center of Buddhist learning for all of Asia from India, China, Vietnam to Korea and Japan. It's new campus was opened by PM Modi on June 19, 2024. Near it is the Mahavihara Budhhist temple renovated from ruins at a UNESCO heritage site. Excavations were done in the British period by the 1860's bringing to light the ruins of Nalanda, the wonder that was Buddhist India. Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in Bihar and his last years were spent at Kusinagar in Bihar, all in the vicinity of Nalanda University, a center of ancient learning that is older than all European Universities, and is only now becoming known throughout the world.
