Frenchman Christophe Weber, 47, is head of Glaxo's vaccine business. He is the next CEO of Japanese pharmaceutical manufacturer Takeda Pharmaceutical Company. He will succeed President Yasuchika Hasegawa. Weber will join Takeda in April as chief operating officer and become president in June 2014. Hasegawa will continue as interim CEO for one year and Weber is expected to succeed Hasegawa, 67, at that point. Hasegawa has run the company for 10 years. During this period Takeda has expanded internationally. Takeda acquired Swiss drug company Nycomed in 2011. Executives were hired from western companies. Francois-Xavier Roger, of Luxembourg's Millicom International Cellular SA was made the chief financial officer, and Phillip Duncan of Novartis joined as chief procurement officer. Hasegawa sees new talent from western companies as useful in penetrating emerging markets. Weber also headed Glaxo's Asia/Pacific operations. Hasegawa told a news confernece: "We're no longer in an age where decisions are based on whether a person is Japanese or foreign." ...

Will Detroit automakers be able to respond to a change in consumer preferences and a shift to cars from SUV's and light trucks? Gasoline prices are expected to rise significantly in 2011, and could approach $4 a gallon. The Detroit carmakers are better prepared now than in 2008. The question is are they prepared enough considering that there was a renewed emphasis on light trucks and SUV's in the lineup of Detroit carmakers in 2010, and compared to Asian competitors in the market whose focus is still on cars. To rebound to profitability GM and Ford took advantage of a pickup in SUV and light truck sales. Chrysler benefitted from a revamped Jeep Cherokee. All three Detroit carmakers sold more light trucks and SUV's than cars in 2010, and GM's car sales went down in 2010. By comparison Toyota and Honda sold more cars than SUV's and light trucks in 2010, and Hyundai does not make any light trucks. Toyota brand US sales head, Bob Carter, says as vehicles are becoming more fuel efficient across all sizes he does not expect the impact to be as dramatic as in 2008. The impact of fuel prices is becoming evident at some Toyota dealerships where sales of Prius vehicles are up significantly. In 2007 before a gas price surge SUV and truck sales were at 53% in the US market, they were down to 47% in 2009, and are now back up to 50%....

The cost of electric and hybrid cars, with the added factor of electricity shortages, make 'green cars' a rare sight on Indian roads. The Prius in India costs $40,000. Only 12,000 battery powered scooters and motorcycles were sold in 2010. With the right economics and convenience the situation could change. About 1 million compressed natural gas vehicles are on Indian roads, according to Asian NGV. This is because CNG vehicles are similiar in price to gasoline vehicles and the switch to CNG is inexpensive for regular vehicles.

The purchase of F/A-18 aircraft by Germany capable of delivering nuclear weapons stationed in Germany is critical to keeping the nuclear deterrance and the "nuclear sharing" agreement with the U.S. Older aircraft, the Tornadoes are now 40 years old. Chancellor Merkel has supported the purchase but this is now being called into question by its junior partner in the coalition government the SPD.  Leaders of the SPD party say they would block the purchase of 45 Boeing Company made F/A-18 jets proposed by Merkel's defense minister. Under NATO's nuclear sharing agreement going back to the 1950's it is believed there are about 180 B61 tactical nuclear bombs in rope, some 20 in Germany and spread out over Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey. President Trump has said the U.S. will withdraw from a treaty with Russia that limits the presence of nuclear missiles in Europe because Russia is not living up to the agreement. This could lead to an arms race. The issue is leading to the beginning of a fundamental debate about nuclear armanent and military spending of a type that has not happened in Europe since 1982 when a rebellion in the SPD over the stationing of nuclear weapons in Europe led to the ouster of Chancellor Helmut Schmidt.  The Christian Democrats view the purchase of the F/A-18 at a time when Russia is updating its nuclear deterrance as fundamental to NATO and nuclear sharing. The SPD's leaders say nuclear sharing does not mean the need to host nuclear weapons, and give the example of Canada, a NATO ally that does not have U.S. weapons on its soil. ...

Of the $19 billion in aid to farmers for the coronavirus, $16 billion of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, goes in direct payments to farmers and rancher with checks going out end of May. Another $3 billion goes to mass purchases of dairy, meat and produce that will be distributed through food banks. Faced with loss of sales with restaurants and schools closed, and disruptions in deliveries to grocery stores, farmers in the U.S. have stopped or slowed production. As a result huge quantities of food that can't be sold are being destroyed. Plowing under thousands of acres of vegetables, dumping millions of gallons of milk, and destroying eggs. In addition to this aid Agriculture Secretary Perdue says the department is using funds set aside under the larger coronavirus relief aid package of $2 trillion for the U.S., and funds from the Commodity Credit Corporation. Mr. Perdue is himself a farmer from Georgia, who was governor for eight years. These funds are separate from the $28 billion to farmers being distributed by USDA to offset losses from loss of sales to China. USDA plans to make monthly purchases of $100 million each of fresh produce, dairy products and meat, and work with the nation's food distributors to assemble a pre-approved box of food to be given out at food banks and other outlets. ...

It is not just in the US that statistically inflation is receding. In the UK prices were down 0.3 percent or three tenths of one percent this year in August compared to last year.Yet make no mistake lower income families and students in the US and in the UK, and in Germany and France across Europe are living from paycheck to paycheck, or simply struggling to make ends meet. This is the problem that Starmer in UK and Biden-Harris Harris-Walz now face with the need to bring housing and food prices down and hold them in check to improve the lives of students, working people.

Unheard of things are happening, but that is what this recession is doing to immigrants from Mexico to the United States. Families from poor states like Chiapas and Oaxaca in Mexico, are sending money north to the USA to support a son or a family member, who is unemployed in the US and unable to return home. One father says he sends money just so his son can eat. And a family in rural Oaxaca sold a cow to send $1000 to a family member in the USA.

Citi's shares went up 18% with the $25 billion capital injection October 13, 2008, but says Eavis in Heard on the Street, the dangers in its balance sheet are still there. Oct 14, 2008, the closing price was $18.62 per share but its tangible book value is estimated at just more than $10 a share. With losses expected to remain high for several quarters this premium may be an odd thing, and with the losses the tangible book value may be below $9 a share. So there are more strong winds ahead of Citi.

Mark Roe and expert on cororate governance and bankruptcy law at Harvard Law School, says two of the toughest issues facing the auto industry are clearly better dealt with under bankruptcy law. For the $30 billion of bond debt he says while a few holdouts can prevent arecapitalization outside of bankruptcy, under bankruptcy Chaoter 11 bondholders vote on the plan, and if those holding more than two thirds of the bonds by dollar value accept the deal it applies to all of them. For the supplier network he says courts know that the bankrupt company has to have supplies, inventory and parts flowing for it to function, so the bankruptcy code and bankruptcy courts put payments for new supplies at the top of the queue ahead of old lenders. HE says a bankruptcy judge has to approve these kinds of payments, but the approvals are regular and quick, sometimes on the first day of bankruptcy. So why is GM management saying the supplier network would collapse under bankruptcy? Mark Roe's answer to this question is that bankruptcy usually leads to a sharp change in management, and a new direction for the company. He adds that here are experts at fixing troubled companies who would take new directions and be more effective than current management at GM. ...

Diet consultant Tallmadge says be careful about reduced fat peanut butter, enhanced water, energy bars and multigrain foods. She says reduced fat peanut butter is worse than ordinary peanut butter because it takes away the nutrients in the oil. Enhanced water can be nothing more than sugary drinks with vitamin added, better to drink clean tap water. Sugar is a major ingredient in energy bars. Better to snack on fruits and veggies and yogurt, or carry nuts and dried fruits if hiking or doing outdoor activity. And watch out for the marketing words saying its multigrain, what you want is whole grain not refined starch. Don't be fooled by the marketing of the packaged foods industry, check the ingredients carefully, because labels such as "low fat," "high fiber," "multigrain," and "natural," don't mean much. Eating right starts with selecting food carefully and diligently, and goes a long way in preventing many of the diseases and problems coming out of poor eating habits.

Arseniy Yatseniuk, resigns as prime minister of Ukraine in April 2016, as his popularity declines with falling living standards and corruption scandals. The new government is still from the old political elite. Prices have gone up by 50% in recent years and GDP has fallen in the three years of conflict with Russia. This article in the Economist magazine says young civil activists in Ukraine are working hard to set up institutions- sometimes parallel institutions such as the Reanimation Package of Reforms of 50 non-governmental civic organizations- that wil give Ukraine better governance after decades of corrupt governments. Online coverage on corruption is increasing creating an environment where the poor governance of the past is no longer the norm. The IMF which has a $17 billion loan package for Ukraine has ceased disbursements till Ukraine can take action against corruption and improve governance. The IMF insisted on the formation of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau. As the U.S., EU, and NATO, come closer to Ukraine, during a period of tense relations with Russia, the quality of Ukrainian governance is an important issue for formerly Communist Eastern European countries and for the rest of Europe. It all depends on civic society and young people with new aspirations to change the way things are done....

David O'Reilly' stock is higher with the media either because he is conscious of the need for a new look at old ideas about oil and its use, and conscious of a new era on how we approach oil as the world is changing and that our thinking must change with it too. So he is not facing the situation Exxon and Rex Tillerson are facing with one of its largest shareholders the Rockefeller family saying that Exxon has tunnel vision and is not doing enough for exploration or for the environment On both of these scores Chevron and Reilly score better in the media image. It could also be Chevron's advertising promoting an image of an environmentally responsible company aware that oil is a limited resource and the need for a changing view. And ofcourse David O'Reilly is Irish and reflects views across the Atlantic which oftentimes are more in touch with the way world is changing than the USA view which tends to be insular. And he is the only one to be CEO of the major oil company leaders who has been around throughout a period when oil went from $25 a barrel in 2000 to $120 a barrel. Sweden alone has $23.2 billion of loan exposurte for Latvia. Loan exposure for European banks is $42.2 billion for Lithuania, $39.5 billion for Latvia, $35.2 billion for Estonia, and $38.7 billion for Bulgaria. The currencies of the three Baltic republics are pegged to the euro and there value has remained unchanged even as the currencies of Russia, Hungary, Ukraine and the UK have seen substantial devaluations during this crisis. Experts say a devaluation should be undertaken to reduce the pain of wage and benefit cuts for public serive employees. Individuals, homeowners and companies hold over $40 billion of loans that they owe foreign banks, making paymetn more difficult and leading to more loan defaults. Latvia has seen overnight interest rates rise to about 20% and expects GDP to fall 18% this year. Swedish banks say they are prepared for a devaluation and high laon default rates, and the Swedish government has committed to help the Baltic countries in this crisis. See link.

Following corruption scandals in Brazil, the situation in Peru involves the company Odebrecht which figured widely in construction contracts in Brazil. Peru's Congress is opening proceedings for impeachment of President Pedro Kuczynski on charges of improper payments of $782,000 by Odebrecht to Kuczynski. The situation is not new to Peru, as amazingly the culture of "he robs but he also builds" has some roots in Latin America, only to be rejected by a growing middle class by 2017. Previous president Alejandro Toledo  was indicted by prosecutors for taking payments of $20 million from Odebrecht in the early 2000s. Former president Ollanta Humala is in jail awaiting trial. The mood is changing now even though a major problem is that other politicians in Congress in Peru and Brazil suffer from some of the same faults as the government in power.  In Peru a major sticking point is the unfinished Costa Verde project, a road in which $100 million contract was given to the Odebrect company, and $4 million in bribes given according to prosecutors. The road to the airport from the city of Lima remains unfinished, with much of the planned road to cut traffic time on congested roads is now just highway dirt. The public attitude is that they always thought the next president would "be different." Following repeated disenchantment the attitude has definitely shifted, yet one problem remains. The old set of politicians are still there in Brazil, Peru, and other countries, when a transition is needed. ...

Tammy Duckworth of Illinois even thanked Rubio for changing House rules so she could bring her new born daughter to the Senate for votes- Rubio had told her "What's the big deal?" This may be the best and most important appointment DJT has made considering how down to earth, courteous yet frank spoken Rubio has been in his work in the Senate and in talking to the public. In 2020 Rubio had poointed out how easily "Luckin Coffee" had raised money in US capital markets- it later went bankrupt. Whitacre is basically blunt about his mission from the Obama adminstration when he attends meetings at the Tech Center in Warren or at the Westin Detroit Airport hotel and the San Antonio club: get GM growing again, he wants to see market share north of 20%. He has told GM's Henderson he will be replaced it things don't change fast enough, and he wants product out faster, 2 year development times for new cars instead of three years today. The same message has been passed on to middle and upper middle managers in diagonal meetings. The 11th Annual State of the News Media Report of the Pew Research Center is optimistic about the future of the news media business and news organizations. The optimism centers on the new investments in the business leading to new hiring for Buzz Feed, Washington Post, and other organizations, the access to news media on the tablets and the smartphones, the new ways and tools used to reach a younger demographic, on line video clips on the digital websites which are drawing users away from the news cable networks with viewership of Fox, CNN and MSNBC declining 11%. Six of 10 adults watch video online and half of them watch news videos. Interactive data presentation is popular. Younger people of highschool or college age get news on Facebook and social media networks, another way of consuming news information. Especially useful are results of the Pew Center's research showing 68% of American adults connect to the internet on tablets or smartphones, and 31% of tablet owners telling Pew they were taking out more time for news information. The tablet is particularly well suited for news information, and as lighter, thinner, easier to hold and fit into a pocket tablets are designed at lower prices, this trend is likely to get stronger....

In making his announcement to run for president in 2024 president Biden told a trade union audience that for Mr. Trump reviving American manufacturing was merely a punchline- not much happened. Krugman in this NYT report shows that Mr. Trump never acted seriously to directly make that happen. President Biden has passed legislation that creates trillions of dollars of investments in infrastructure, renewable energy, chips manufacturing, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing technologies. Krugman says in addition to what the government is spending private companies are also planning to invest trillions of dollars. As a result the US is in the process of building its manufacturing base for the first time after decades of neglect under the Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Obama and Trump administrations.  Economists have created a major handicap for investments in manufacturing with theories that are no longer relevant, and by their lack of understanding of the realities of workers and families in the US as manufacturing shriveled. They never figured into their analysis the loss of tax revenue base supported by factories in the US that led to disinvestment in towns and communities across the US. As public services and investment in these communities dwindled without the local revenues to support them. Mr. Krugman lacks the keen grasp of these issues that Biden as the longest serving Senator in the US has. Biden had so much time on the ground observing the situation in Scranton and other parts of Pennsylvania and Delaware, and much of the midwestern US seeing what happens first hand as factories close. Krugman is not able to make the case that manufacturing so truly needs. Yet even Krugman has some sense of the big changes underway in the US that Biden has created that will lead to the renewal of America. ...

Hear the complete speech of German Chancellor Scholz to an extraordinary session of the German Parliament on DW.com. This may be the most important speech in the last 30 years of German history since reunification. An extraordinary speech that sets the tone for the new Europe that Germany leads with its partners in the European Union. Fundamentally Scholz tells the German people that Germany is fighting alongside Europe for its freedom and democracy, so that the last 30 years of peace are seen not as an exception in history. Germany will not let Putin take us back to the imperial wars of the 19th century, Putin told parliament. Scholz tells the German people sending arms to Ukraine "was the only response possible to Russian aggression." He also tells them that it was not the Russian people, it was Putin who had launched this aggression. "This is Putin's War. Putin is destroying the European security structure." "A peaceful free Europe, we will defend it." This is the way Scholz finished his speech. Scholz outlined 5 actions Germany was taking including actions on investing $100 billion in Bundeswehr armed forces, in strengthening NATO capabilities, in building up Germany's technological capabilities, in 2 huge natural gas terminals. The entire German parliament stood up to applaud for a long time as Scholz described how Germany was with the Russian people who braved arrest to protest Putin's War, and there are many, many, Russians who do not support the war. Reconciliation with Russia remains a building block of German policy he said.   ...

Xi has chosen upward mobility for the Chinese people in all parts of the country including rural areas, reducing disparities in income, tackling climate change over the very hyper growth that has caused climate change and wreaks havoc in floods and fires across the planet. By the Chinese dream is meant that China would have a fair chance to match the western world with its own culture, language, creativity of its people, and he has chosen to do this in away that respects China's history and struggles with imperialist Britain, and the imperial powers in the modern period since 1500. It only poses a threat to the US if the US does not also invest in its own people, follows misguided military adventures overseas, and does not invest in its own manufacturing and technological potential at home. Historically the imperial powers were Britain, France, Germany, Russia. The US under Woodrow Wilson and under FDR pursued policies that were at odds with the imperial powers and favored a China that could build the potential of its own people far beyond what the imperial powers intended- for India, Turkey, China, Vietnam, and the rest of Asia. At each step of the way to 1948 the US policy remained true to this. Even the Cold War was a struggle against an imperial power- Russia which under the Bolsheviks and even today follows imperial minded policies for Eastern Europe. The Biden administration and the Xi administration in China are really not that far apart in pursuing policies that support people from all parts of their countries, and are resolute in the fight against climate change making growth conform with respecting the earth. ...

"This nation was founded on a simple yet profound principle: No one is above the law. Not the president of the United States. Not a justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. No one. But the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision on July 1 to grant presidents broad immunity from prosecution for crimes they commit in office means there are virtually no limits on what a president can do. The only limits will be those that are self-imposed by the person occupying the Oval Office.  "I served as a U.S. senator for 36 years, including as chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. I have overseen more Supreme Court nominations as senator, vice president and president than anyone living today. USC Justices Roberts, Gorsuch and Coney Barrett questioning Solicitor General Sauer, and lawyer for the small business Katyal, on Tariffs by the US president DJT in November 2025. Coney Barrett says the whole thing is a big mess. Treasury Secretary Bessent who watched the proceedings in the Court benches says the issue of fentanyl is one of the reasons for tariffs on China which has played a uncooperative role on this issue of fentanyl sourced by drug trafficking gangs on America's borders. Bessent saying that it is a policy tool when unfriendly powers seek to hurt America. DJT says a SCOTUS ruling against the Tariffs would reduce America to Third World status. Most American themselves are being told by the media interests that the issue of young Americans dying from fentanyl is an issue like many others not that it is the heart of the issue that more Americans have died from fentanyl than the youth of America who died in the Korean, Vietnam and First World Wars combined. The wine import company with 19 employees whose lawyer Katyal filed a petition to SCOTUS is a tiny part of the people harmed by tariffs. It could easily be compensated from the tariffs revenue of $500 billion in 2025-2026 as could other businesses. How does the SCOTUS decide what policy the US is to use. With recalcitrant Asian nations Japan and China the only way is years of negotiations that lead nowhere on world trade. Is SCOTUS responsible or Congress to the American people when the supply chain disruptions caused by concentration of the supply chain in China led to huge price increases making life unaffordable for the low income earners,  including cost of automobiles? Large companies acting on the DJT signals are reducing this concentration in China actively, the trade deficit is coming down, the tariffs revenue is a fund to offset the cost to Americans mostly smaller businesses as large businesses increased their margins in 2022-2024 pricing moves so that today only about 30% of the tariff cost is borne by the average Americans, the rest by large businesses and some of it by exporters in China and Japan. ...
