UAW's Shawn Fain's support of US 25% auto tariffs April 2, 2025. Fain says-“We applaud the Trump administration for stepping up to end the free trade disaster that has devastated working class communities for decades.” US president Biden supported the UAW, even standing in a picket line to support UAW negotiate a contract for fair wages for workers with the three US automakers, Ford, GM and Stellantis. For decades workers in the US faced the threat of outshoring to Mexico to reduce wages. This action on tariffs will increase depressed wages for American workers in the same way that president Biden's action helped negotiate better wages. In this sense both Biden and DJT are on the same track. In fact president Biden 2020-2024 decided to keep most of the tariffs put up by president Trump in 2016-2020. It is likely that a future Democratic administration will continue DJT tariff policies to achieve domestic goals such as fair wages for American workers, and for rebuilding American manufacturing in the way president Biden has done. This is in fact one of the singular achievements of the Biden administration for building the working class and middle class neglected by Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations. On this issue both Biden, Trump and any future US president will be on the same page, because it is about fair trade, to even the playing field, and is right by American workers and American values. History will show that this required courage and persistence on the part of Biden and DJT, and was done not on whim as is falsely portrayed but on the advice of people who had the experience, wisdom and sought the best for America such as Robert Lighthizer ,the US Trade Representative in 2016-2020 and his deputy Jamieson who is the USTR in 2025. Lighthizer is notable because he handled the unfair trade with the Japanese in the 1980's as Deputy USTR under Reagan, and knows fair trade and how to get it to build a strong American economy. ...

Kamala Harris support could exceed the 92% won by Biden in 2020 in Detroit. Harris could also exceed the 45% support in Macomb County for Biden in 2020, as Whitmer support was 52% in 2022 Governor's election. Macomb is a county with mostly white voters and union voters.  Union vote is split with concerns about EV's helping Trump, and standing on the picket line in a UAW strike helping Biden. Harris is also doing much better with younger voters who feel energized by Harris. Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer did well even with voters in western Michigan towns like Grand Rapids in 2022.

Fed chairman Jerome Powell gets Biden's support for another term as chairman of America's central bank. Powell is utterly different from previous Fed governors under previous administrations because of his concentration and clarity of mind that let him focus on the job of renewing America, after the missteps of previous governors and administrations. The WSJ says he is viewed by president Biden and by markets as a steady hand whose extensive, personal outreach helped restore bipartisan support for the central bank one decade after its reputation was badly hurt by the 2008 financial crisis.  People from both sides of the aisle in Congress and in markets see his personal outreach reflected in his understanding of the country and the needs of its people. Rep Emmanuel Cleaver, Democrat of Missouri says Powell visited  Missouri several years ago and talked to a cross section of rural Missourians and Kansas City residents. And everybody who met Powell thought he was frank, nothing partisan about him, as straight shooter. After what America went through during the financial crisis of 2008 and the utterly aloof and distant central bank governors of the last 3 decades Powell brings a needed quality for all who head America's central bank -a direct on the ground understanding of the needs of the people and the country. Senator John Kennedy, Republican of Louisiana says "You kept this thing in the middle of the road. Some days you had to do it with spit and happy thoughts but you kept this thing in the middle of the road." Powell's senior thesis at Princeton University was titled "South Africa- Forces for Change," and the years since then reflect a concern for the people, for families and working class Americans. Supporting Powell is Lael Brainard, Fed governor, who will be vice chairman. Brainard brings experience to tackle the regulation of banks that was missed under previous administrations.   ...

A 15% minimum corporate tax on large, profitable corporations is part of the global minimum corporate tax proposed by US central bank chairwoman Janet Yellen, and the tax proposed by US president Biden. The tax would not apply to companies making $100 million as earlier proposed. The threshold has been raised to $2 billion and affects the companies that have avoided taxes the most. This report says there are 45 such companies in the US.  A US Treasury report on the tax says "the 15% minimum tax is a targeted approach to ensure that the most aggressive tax avoiders are forced to pay meaningful tax liabilities." The Biden agenda on corporate taxes would raise more than $2 trillion over 15 years to pay for essential infrastructure renovation to replace decaying infrastructure in the US. This means roads, bridges, airports, ports, transit systems, electricity grid, broadband systems, school systems, health systems, would all be targets for investment for the first time in 50 years in a concerted drive. The tax drive would partly reverse the Republican Congress's 2017 reduction in corporate tax rate to 21% from 35%, boosting it to 28%. European Union countries such as Britain are also following similar policies after decades in which a race to the bottom led to the lack of funds to finance essential infrastructure rebuilding. As a result China which was a nation of bicycles back in the 1980's now has some of the newest infrastructure, while the US and the EU countries have what might be considered crumbling infrastructure badly in need for renovation. As the shift in mood to a competitive world not only in technologies but in infrastructure and ease of living happens there is more and more awareness of what has been lost in the last 40 years.  ...

The three years of the pandemic has also put families under severe stress. This WSJ report shows how the debt ceiling negotiation were conducted and the process that made it possible to reach an agreement since the State of the Union address by president Biden on February 7, 2023. It started with Biden getting unanimity right on the floor of Congress during his speech about protecting Medicare and Social Security. The Republican strategy was to pass the legislation on spending that did not specify where cuts were to be made yet used 2022 spending levels with a 1% increase. The deal was to be for three years and passed the spending bill with an increase inthe debt ceiling. Till that time the Democrats decided to not enter negotiations.  Biden and McCarthy then had to choose who would represent their side in the long negotiation process that lay ahead till June 5. Progressive Democrats called for invoking the 14th Amendment that allows the government to continue functioning and pay its bills. Biden chose not to take that route. Respect for the other side, a prepared script are an important point in negotiations. To get results something even more important is essential flexibility and a plan, Plan B. Trust began to develop between McCarthy and Biden. Biden and McCarthy did not any time engage in acrimonious description of the other side. At one point when Biden was in Hiroshima for the G7 meetings Ricchetti on the Biden side and Graves on the Republican side began to feel the frustration. Biden decided to fly home early from Hiroshima. He was constantly in touch with his negotiators Steve Ricchetti, a trusted aide, and a cabinet official the Budget Director Shalanda Young. Graves a long time trusted adviser of McCarthy headed the negotiations for McCarthy.  Shalanda Young and Garrett Graves are both from Louisiana and Graves says he used to work out with Young's dad in the same area. This had a positive effect. It also reduced the tensions in the negotiations so that it could be said this was the calmest negotiation from either side that has been seen in the US  for a long time and bodes well for America's future and for its people, far beyond any concessions made by either party.  Biden made clear at the outset what he could accept without leaving it hidden- he would agree to some work requirements, he would not agree to work requirements for Medicaid. Others in the Democratic party conveyed how distraught they were with efforts to impose stringent requirements for federal food aid during a cost of living crisis when the Republican positions ruled out any new taxes on the wealthiest Americans. In the end Republicans agreed to keep spending limits for 2023 for two more years into 2025 when they would be increased by 1%. Democrats offered to cut (Income Tax) Internal Revenue Service (IRS) spending to increase IRS staffing from $80 billion to $70 billion. Biden said "nobody got everything they wanted." It would have to be passed in Congress with the support of moderate Democrats and moderate Republicans, with members holding extreme positions among Republicans and Democrats opposing. The two parties coming together after a long time to meet the real challenges ahead for the American people. ...

Janet Protasiewicz, a Democrat, wins 55% to 45% for Republican Daniel Kelly in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election. This gives Democrats a one vote majority in the Supreme Court. It will mean a challenge of a 1849 abortion law and the redrawing of the electoral maps that gives Republicans  a majority in the state assembly. The governor is Democrat Tony Evers and the legislature in Wisconsin has a Republican majority.  States in the midwest such as Michigan and Wisconsin played a part in Mr. Trump's gain of the presidency. Since then Ohio has moved into the Republican side, and the close contests are in places like Arizona, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Colorado moved to the Democratic side. Just 40,000 votes in Arizona, Georgia and Wisconsin separated Biden from Trump in the election of 2020 even though Biden had 7 million more votes than Biden because of the Electoral College system which goes by state's won. In 2016 Trump and Biden were separated by just 80,000 votes.   ...

The great persistence shown by president Biden in negotiating with Hamas through Qatar's emir and with Israel's Netanyahu to get both to come to an agreement for release of hostages. This was delayed twice, once with Israel's takeover of the Al Shifa hospital complex in Gaza and then with recalcitrance shown by both sides to agree over which hostages would be released. Each time Biden persisted till he got the deal for both hostage release and a temporary ceasefire that could be the basis for future settlement of decades of conflict. Biden has expresssed his determination to end this conflict. In this he has the support of the world community of nations.

He has spent 33 years in the State Department and this experience is being used by the Biden administration as Burns is sent on key missions to the Middle East. He was in touch with Putin before the invasion of Ukraine. He made 16 overseas trips since taking up the job in March 2021 with missions to Kabul to talk to Taliban and to UAE to meet leaders. He is seen here in this WSJ report as someone who can take up making conversations with people Mr. Biden isn't ready to talk to or preparing the way for future conversations as in the Middle East.
