The British pound drops by 5 cents to the dollar in the 1st week of October. By Oct 6, 2016 the pound dropped to $1.245. Since the Brexit vote the pound has fallen by 25 cents. This is happening even with the ultra-loose monetary policy of the Bank of England. The difficulty facing the government in keeping promises for Brexit with the fact of a British economy that is closely connected to the European Union, mean that a disruptive departure is possible. This is reflected in the sharp and continuing decline of the Pound. The drop in the Pound could also aggravate inflation, making the Bank of England's job more difficult. The Pound's earlier role as a safe haven during the eurozone debt crisis is also now changed after Brexit vote to leave the EU has created new uncertainties and risks for the British economy.

India recorded 100,000 cases in one day on April 5, 2021. About half of these cases are in one state Maharashtra. Most of the cases are in about 6 states. Super spreader events such as cricket matches, weddings and social gatherings, political rallies with elections in states of Tamilnadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Holi festival, are increasing the rate of infection. People have become lax in wearing masks and following the safety protocol after cases dropped to less than 15,000 for the whole country in February. This report says variants also are playing apart. Google Mobility Reports have shown that movements around retail areas dropped to about 80% below regular levels in the middle of the national lockdown in spring of 2020, and have come back up to about 20% below normal levels. When the winter surge did not happen, and the vaccination drive started in January in India people became less vigilant, allowing infections to increase. The vaccination drive is accelerating and open to everyone over 45 years. About 80 million doses have been given and the target is still for 300 million doses by August.  ...

Money managers, including AllianceBernstein's Daniel Loughney, say months of difficult negotiations and brinksmanship on Greece have affected the euro currency and may appear negatively in the euro's future in the coming years. The euro declined at one point in the negotiations to $1.05 in March before going back up to its current value of $1.12 in June 2015. This compares to the value of $1.40 in summer 2015. Compared to 2012 the markets in Southern Europe and the euro currency are largely protected from the situation in Greece, as little of the Greek government debt is held by banks and the private sector outside Greece. Some money managers (Franklin Templeton Inc. and SLJ Macro Partners) are even saying Greece's exit from the euro may be a good thing. Extraordinary liquidity is available from the ECB's bond buying program started in March 2015, protecting the eurozone banks and markets.

This also means less dependence on imported technologies and inward looking policies. As the pandemic has reduced demand in other countries and as the U.S. and West tighten controls on imports and introduce new restrictions, there is the sense that the entire policy has to shift quickly to dependence on domestic consumers and investors.

In an Op-ed in the Washington Post Mehmet Oz, Head of Medicaid and Medicare says while banning use of Medicaid and Medicare funds for transgender medical procedures- "America’s children aren’t lab mice. They deserve quality care backed by sound evidence and should not be conscripted as test subjects in risky experiments that cause irreversible harm. Federal government is banning the use of Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program funds to subsidize sex-rejecting medical interventions for minors and prohibiting hospitals participating in Medicare and Medicaid from performing them. Dr Oz says "extraordinary interventions such as cross-sex hormones and double mastectomies require extraordinary evidence, especially when children are involved." He says the evidence is lacking and cites information from many countries. ...

Kaname Harada, 98 years, was a Japanese fighter pilot during World War II. Here NYT's Martin Fackler provides this exceptional account of Harada's effort to remind each new generation since 1965 of the horrors of war, and why Japan should not forget the lessons of World War II. In 1965 Harada started teaching kindergarden children at a school he opened to help give a new Japanese generation the right values of peace. Since he retired he gives frequent public speeches on the values of peace, and how Japan has benefitted from the post war peacetime period. He reminds listeners about the horrors of war from his own experience shooting down 19 Allied aircraft from his Zero fighter plane, and being close enough to see the horror stricken faces of Americans in the other planes. Even at the age of 98, Harada's voice has vigor though he suffers from throat cancer. His message is that the best way for Japan to protect its children, and its children's children from war, is never to forget. He says the current generation of leaders were born after the war and have no idea what it is....

Brazil faces a debt crisis in 2015-2016. Between 2010 and 2015 foreign debt of local governments and Brazilian firms increased from $100 billion to $250 billion, and dollar debt in local currency from 210 billion reas to 655 billion reas, according to Bank of International Settlements data. State banking institutions BNDES and Caixa Economica Federal financed 35% of loans in 2010, by 2015 this increased to 55%. Subsidized loans at 5.5% by BNDES to firms make Brazilian banking a fiscal operation, requiring additional funding. Petrobras increased debt issuance enormously during this period, and now needs government support as its debt is now one notch above junk status. Interest payments on Brazil's debt is 6% of GDP in 2014. Public sector debt is 66% of GDP, and credit to the private sector is 55% of GDP up from 25% in 2005. It will take Brazil years to recover from a huge borrowing binge.

NYT's Homan who traveled 640 miles across Colorado and Woolf look at the reelection bid of a 33 year old owner of a restaurant and bar in the small town of Rifle in Colorado, Lauren Boebert. Dropping wheat and corn prices will reduce the effect on increase in inflation for food prices. A recently signed agreement for UN and Turkey to supervise exports of Ukrainian grain to world markets is showing up in declining futures prices for corn and wheat that will show up in lower food prices. A large harvest for wheat and other foodgrains in Russia and Ukraine is also having an impact. Slower economic growth in China from frequent lockdowns and the ailing property sector, could bring oil prices down from the highs. The shift to renewable energy taking on a huge impetus from recently passed legislation in the US Congress for $369 billion investment and similar moves in Europe with a 15% required reduction under new EU rules could have the same effect of pushing down fossil fuel prices from their highs. This suggests Fed chairman Powell's sense that the economy would improve in the second half is consistent with international developments. The war in Ukraine could also have a possibility of coming to a close in coming months with Russian gains in the east and Ukraine recovering lost land around the Black Sea in the south. Decades of fighting in Ukraine may have obscured the fact that the eastern parts of Ukraine voted in pro Russian governments in the past and the western parts of Ukraine have voted in pro EU governments. The war could end with a settlement around these new boundaries. This would also enhance president Biden's foreign and domestic policy achievements and help the US focus on climate change actions, building new supply chains, rebuilding its manufacturing, its leadership in science and technology, its alliances with EU, and with Japan and India in the Indo-Pacific. ...
