Intel expects to rebound in its chip sales with its new products- the Ivy Bridge line for ultra thin notebooks called Ultrabooks (about 100 designs of Ultrabooks expected in 2012-2013), and the new Xeon chip for servers to handle the surge in internet data. O'Malley sees the policy as having reduced crime in the city, yet David Simon a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, who created the HBO series 'The Wire,' sees this differently. The HBO series was critical of the Mayor and painted a less flattering picture of the city, showing city leaders and institutions not tackling the real problems facing the city. Following the riots in Baltimore the conflicting versions of progress and lack of progress are emerging. Simon says the pressure on the police to show reduced crime led to arrest of people for minor offences.

Ten year euro denominated bonds of Portugal had a yield of about 3.58% in June 2014, down from about 6% at the beginning of 2014. Ireland's 10 year bonds have a yield of 2.36%, down from 3.42% at the beginning of 2014. In comparison 10 year German Bunds yield about 1.25% in June 2014. There is strong investor demand for the higher yield on these bonds in a low interest rate environment. Portugal exited a 78 billion euro three year bailout without getting a precautionary credit line which was seen favorably by credit ratings agencies.

With U.S. exports to China related to about 1% of U.S. GDP, and the direct foreign investment by China in the U.S. being less than 1% of all foreign investment in the U.S., the slowdown in China is likely to have a small effect on the U.S. economy, say experts. China's slowdown will help service industries in the U.S., internet companies, software and entertainment companies. Positive factors include slower growth in manufactured imports from China, low commodity prices including oil for an extended period of time, access to more Chinese investment in the U.S. with higher returns, and more talented students from China staying in the U.S.

11 Pacific Rim nations form the Trans-Pacific Partnership in 2018. The Obama administration supported the trade pact alienating supporters in its union base particularly in the midwestern states. Mr. Trump opposed the TPP in his election campaign and made it a significant issue for swing voters in midwestern states after job losses in the auto industry. With the opposition of president Trump the U.S. decided to withdraw from TPP.  The 11 nations agreeing to join a revised agreement are Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. So far six countries have formally approved the deal, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Singapore, New Zealand and Japan, setting the stage for two rounds of tariff reductions starting December 30, 2018. Agricultural products duties will be duty free within 3 to 7 years including for Japan and Mexico. Australia, New Zealand, Canada are major agricultural exporters. Japan supported the deal as a way to counter China's influence in the region. In the U.S. the gains would be in intellectual property rights but losses for workers in the auto and manufacturing industries, a point Mr. Trump recognized in his election campaign as he campaigned in the midwestern states. Mr. Obama pursued TPP over objections of workers organizations and unions including auto workers union, with his advisors suggesting this as a way to counter China's influence in the region.
