What has happened that makes it so hard for Democrats Biden who stood on a picket line for the UAW autoworkers union, Harris fighting for workers, that they cannot easily convince workers that they are on their side? It is because compared to 1980 not the lowest income groups but the "downwardly mobile" white and other groups without college degrees have taken the brunt of the loss of manufacturing jobs. It is why the "zero-sum" stories of the former president have appeal to some workers who have lost the most from deindustrialization of the US. Even though Biden, and Harris, have fought hard and are putting in place the policies for the fight to reindustrialize America by taking old plants and modernizing them one by one across the country. No one has ever done this before including years in which the former president was in office. In these visual graphs it is easy to see the sharp decline in incomes and status in society of workers without college degrees as the economy changed after 1980 sending steel, auto and other industries to Asia. By 2024 these workers lives had been upended by the loss of these industries and the hope for income and place in society that existed in 1980. Every US president from Reagan through Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump had failed to address this. China's share of US imports reached 10% in 2019. It collapsed during the pandemic after 2019. It then recovered in February-March 2021 to about 15%, and surged afterwards to 42%, and is down close to 15% in November 2024. The incoming DJT administration is bringing back a focus on tariffs- a tariff as high as 60 percent is unlikely as American companies are likely to oppose this. A smaller tariff increase of 20-30% would bring the share of US imports from China back to less than 10% that existed in 2019.

The CDU party selects Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer as its next leader. Chancellor Merkel favored the state premier of Saarland, a small German state, as the next leader. Merkel told CDU delegates that the party was not the party it was in 2002 and praised the work of Karrenbauer in Saarland, in an indirect endorsement of the female candidate over Mr. Merz who favored taking the party to its conservative roots.  Merkel has pushed the CDU to the centre and sometimes to the left in an effort to sideline the Social Democrats, which worked till the migration and refugee influx led to a fragmentation in German political parties and decline in support for CDU. The election was close with Karrenbauer winning in the second ballot by a bare majority. Merkel plans to stay in office till 2021 and the party post in the hands of a close ally helps Merkel consolidate her legacy. Merkel made Karrenbauer Gerneral Secretary in 2018 in a move that was intended to move her to the top position. ...

Manjoo of the NYT describes Apple's new product HomePod which is similar to the Amazon Echo, a smart speaker that has inside it a Amazon virtual assistant. The price tag of $349 is twice that of the Echo.

Manjoo says the surround sound is better and can be customized to the room you are in, though from a distance Echo works better. Apple is now building its capabilities in the cloud services and artificial intelligence field to do better than Amazon in the home assistant product segment. This will help Apple make its personal assistant Siri handle requests better, in many languages. This is a part of the transformation at Apple as it shifts from focus on hardware to focus on "deep learning," and " machine learning.," fields that are now considered transformative.

This article in the Economist magazine says Brazil's new president Michel Temer, once impeachment proceedings lead to the resignation of Dilma Rousseff, is only slightly less popular than her. Polls show 58% of Brazilians say Temer should be impeached close to the 61% for Rousseff, and his party is also affected by the Petrobras corruption scandal. Brazil's large trade unions supporting the Worker's Party of Rousseff see it as a "coup" or "golpe" and promise strikes, combined with large street protests, this comes as the country faces a second year of falling GDP at 3.8% according to the IMF. Brazil has a budget deficit of 10.8% and needs changes in public spending, including pension reforms, which are unlikely under Temer or his party the PMDB, or under the PMDB's Mr. Cunha. Some experts see the change in Brazil as part of a broader shift in Latin America, that happened in Argentina recently with the election of Mauricio Macri as president, towards governments that move to the centre in politics and reduce state intervention in the economy to stimulate growth. This is unlikely to happen in the short run, with society deeply divided and the area in front of the Brazilian Congress cordoned off to separate the opposing factions and rallies of political supporters....
