Aldi store name comes from the store name Albrecht's Discount for stores opened by 1961 in Germany by the Albrecht brothers. The brothers worked at their mother's grocery store in Essen Germany, following their father's disability and not being able to work in the mines. After serving in the war the two brothers expanded the small family grocery store into a chain of about 15 stores. By 1955 this chain had expanded to about 100 stores, and in 1961 the chain took on the Aldi name. The brothers separated their business in later years with Karl taking on the Aldi Sud stores in southern Germany and expanding into UK, Australia and the U.S. Theo, the younger brother, ran the Aldi Nord stores in northern Germany, of what was then West Germany. Aldi Nord expanded in Europe and acquired Trader's Joe in 1979. The two brothers agreed to stay out of each others territory in this unique arrangement. The Albrechts felt strongly in the post war conditions in Germany that "customers with very limited income should be able to eat and drink quality food," according to a statement by Aldi Sud. Karl Albrecht saw this as his calling- to find creative ways to do this. One way was to get rid of other unnecessary expenses such as display and advertising that could be passed on as savings to customers. In this sense Aldi laid the ground for American retailer Wal-Mart. By 1955 Aldi had 100 stores in West Germany. Expansion thereafter made Aldi a household name in most parts of Europe and the U.S. Karl and Theo remained reclusive throughout their life, more so after Theo's kidnapping in Essen in 1971 for a ransom of 7 million deutsche marks. Karl operated the Aldi Sud stores till he was 75 and passed away in 2014 at the age of 94. Ikea founder from Sweden also has a similiar history in being very private, frugal, and living in a small town in Switzerland, providing direction to the company well past his eightieth year. He pioneered the concept of well designed quality furniture at affordable prices that passes on savings to customers. The same concept and vision inspired Ikea founder- that people of average means and younger families starting a home, should be able to afford furniture quality and design in their homes....

Interview with Gerard Kleisterlee, retiring CEO of Philips Electronics. Kleisterlee led the effort to focus on emerging markets where sales of health care, lighting and consumer products are accelerating. Second quarter sales in emerging markets went up 29% for 2010 over the prior year, and now are 34% of total Philips sales. As part of this strategy Philips is increasing its staff and research divisions in China, to capture part of the $125 billion that China plans to spend on healthcare in the next 3 years. Kleisterlee talks about local competitors in emerging markets who are trying to get a regional or global presence. How Philips is increasing local responsibility, and how it is designing, engineering and manufacturing products specifically aimed at local markets in emerging market countries- as away to compete effectively in these markets. He also points out that it is no longer sufficient to be in the major cities, Philips has to move into smaller cities and into the rural areas to increase sales. He sees consolidation opportunities in Asia where the lighting manufacturing is still fragmented. Responding to a question about Philips still being too old, too male, and too Dutch, Kleisterlee agrees that it is too male and too Dutch for his comfort. Women are a bigger part of his health-care team, but not that much progress in other areas of the company. And he would like to see more local leaders in emerging markets. He sees consumer behaviour changing in one respect- there is an increasing consciousness among buyers for value, and not just for low price points, but at all price points....

Lisa Klauser, vice president of consumer and customer solutions at Unilever NV, says its seeing recession period habits becoming a part of the normal shopping behaviour. With some consumers living from paycheck to paycheck, she says Unilever is seeing sales pickup in the first week of each month for lower priced items like Suave shampoo, Skippy peanut butter and Ragu sauce. Ike (President Eisenhower) quotes Eric Hoffer in his book "The True Believer", for a longshoreman's wisdom and insight. Writing to a veteran who asks Ike why the lack of certainty in his voice in 1959 as he nears the end of his second term. "Faith in a holy cause, is to a considerable extent a substitute for the lost faith in ourselves." Ike tells Biggs that, " in a democracy debate is the breath of life." That there is no universal degree of certainty, the confidence in in their understanding of our problems, the clear guidance from ahigher authority. This is important to keep in mind today as one looks at the way leaders from those in finance, industry and central banking and in government who acted as though there was this universal degree of certainty about the financial system and its workings, always to the good, and for the way in which the policies were handled in dealing with other countries. Its also true when one looks at the situation from other countries such as the period under Gandhi and Nehru in India, or Mao and Chou en Lai in China. There also what appeared to have universal certainty did not turn out thay way and policies had to be reversed and legacies examined. What Biggs wanted was "someone to speak for us and to back him completely if the statement was made in truth." And Ike's response was to say that dictatorial systems, and here one can include systems with figures who created their own sense of awe and hero image, make one contribution to their people that leads them to support such systems. And this was "the freedom from the necessity of informing themselves and making up their own minds concerning these tremendous complex and difficult questions."...

Impossible and Beyond Meat, two new companies promoting plant based meat are popularizing the sale of plant based products that contribute to efforts against climate change and at the same time improve health outcomes. Growth of animal based meat consumption is now less than 1% compared to 14% for plant based meat.  New technology is helping improve plant based products using new engineering and production techniques to form plant fibers and proteins that mimic what consumers are used to.  The growth is bringing new companies into the market, including Nestle, Smithfield and Cargill. On the retail side Starbucks, Yum Brands KFC, and McDonalds, Burger King are adding plant based burgers to their product mix.  A new development is cost with the new manufacturing technologies leading to lower costs that compete better on price with animal meat products. Impossible based in Redwood City, California, has a 15% price cut to reduce what it charges to $7.90 to $8.50 a pound.  Impossible and Beyond Meat say they use less energy, water and grain to make burgers from soy and pea protein, than companies that feed, slaughter and transport livestock. Plant based production processes are only now reaching the kind of scale needed to compete with sales of $1 billion in plant based meat. The effects on climate change are not fully understood by people, as animal based products have a much larger footprint on the climate. In particular the health benefits are not understood fully. Animal based fat including from dairy increased chances of prostate cancer say experts. The health benefits of soy protein compared to animal protein are also being better understood in relation to cancer and heart disease. Combining plant based protein with fruits, nuts, beans, ancient grains and vegetables, and reducing meat in the diet,  is now considered a healthy alternative that also is healthy for the environment.   ...

A professor of sociology at the University of Basel describes the growing inequality in Germany, in graphic terms. For the lower middle class the efforts to gain upward mobility are like trying to move up on a downward escalator. About one third of jobs are temp jobs which lack the protections of permanent jobs which were at one time 90% of all jobs. Her book is titled- "The Hidden Crisis; German Social Decline at the Heart of Europe." Nachtwey says on the surface Germany has become competitive and has maintained its growth rate, benefiting from the strong manufacturing sector with trade surpluses, low unemployment. Yet this conceals the underlying crisis of the cost which this has come at- a persistent erosion of the social compact of one elevator where everybody moved up together that was the norm in the early postwar period, fulltime employment, a strong welfare state. Job protections weakened, and while manufacturing sector pay remained stable or rose, less skilled and low wage workers suffered. This has also led to the fracturing in the vote with the fragmentation of political parties following the refugee crisis and the weakening of centrist parties. Voters are now open to different messages after the increase in inequality and uncertain economic future for the lower middle class. ...

No indication that Gulf money is that much better spent this time, as another flood of petrodollars hits the Emirates and Saudi Arabia, with no idea for how long. The huge reserves of dollars built up by the large exporting nations of manufactured products and commodities may have created a huge surge in liquidity that indirectly caused the spending boom that fueled realestate and domestic retail markets in the USA from which the US will take a long time to recover. So these large surpluses of petrodollars cannot be looked at without some concern as they create distortions in the allocation of resources and in spending habits in different nations in the world economy and in different ways. A too low price of oil simply let fuel economy fade as a concern and let fuel economy standards become stagnant for over two decades and a splurge in light trucks and large fuel guzzling vehicles. The freespending buying habits sustained development in China but the low prices of lowend manufacturing goods also led to too much concentration on that kind of manufacturing in China leading to an environmental breakdown. And corrective action comes a llittle late when a lot of the damage has been done and only after this is the alarm raised and the corective action taken. Meantime while these excesses are taking place its seen as a strength as some industrial sectors grow richer and as soon as the excesses become a problem these very industrial sectors become a weakness. Take a look at the auto industry in the USA and the small manufacturers in Guangdong province in China....

The U.S. initial jobless claims for unemployment estimate for March 21 is about 3 million. How to keep layoffs of workers to a minimum and keep businesses from closing. These are the questions lawmakers and governments are addressing today. The British, Dutch and Denmark governments have plans to pick up most of the wage bill for businesses, that do not layoff employees, for as long as 3 months, and if needed longer. The U.S. government has a similar plan. Of the $1.6 trillion aid package being discussed in the U.S. Congress, $350 billion is allocated as loans to businesses which may be forgiven if used for payroll for workers.  The idea is to build a safety net quickly for workers. The U.S. plan is to give families direct aid of $1200 per person and $500 per child with checks sent to each home. A separate allocation in the package increases unemployment insurance from 26 weeks to 39 weeks. The direct aid to large industries and business is a way for these companies to avoid layoffs. Direct aid should be based on how much companies do to retain employees, a move that is in the interest of large companies which will need to have experienced employees once the situation returns to normal by the third or fourth quarters of 2020. The American consumer still spends money on bigger ticket items like luxury cars and iPads. The rich are largely shielded from this recession and one might forget that even with a 10% unemployment rate, says one economist, there are still 90% with jobs, about 75% confident of keeping them, and half with liquidity. So there is spending which is erratic. A sort of EKG type recovery in which it keeps changing all the time, with no consistent pattern. Consumers who are uncertain about the future and facing tight budgets save on toothpaste and basic consumer items, while other consumers continue to spend. A Consumer Reports survey shows consumers willing to spend on appliances and electronics. American Express conducted its survey of consumers and found consumers behind on their savings plans and making impulse purchases, or going outside their means to buy things. One analyst who follows the savings rate closely thinks consumers are spending because the stock market recovered after the 2008 crisis, and as the stock market falters consumers will start saving more. And Prof. Dan Ariely of Duke University, a behavioural economist, says that people who fear losing money in stock market fluctuations feel better spending their money, this way a least they have something to show for it. One reason apple's IPad has done so well is that consumers see it as a compromise purchase, they can give themselves a little something as a reward and still not have to buy a Mac which costs a lot more. And in the patterns of American consumer behaviour experts point to behaviour where consumers will save at Target by buying cheaper brands or buy at Dollar stores for things like paper towels and detergents, and then go out and spend on something pricey to reward themselves or have that feel good feeling. So you have this development that sales are up 9% this year at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minneapolis, USA's largest mall. People look at price tags and shop for deals, they cut spending in places and spend in other areas. ...

Germany recorded 9% growth, in the second quarter of 2010. Martin Wansleben, managing director of Germany's Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says the recovery pace is too fast and unsustainable. The spurt in growth may be shortlived and was mainly a result of a surge in exports to Asian markets. The countries that benefited from this growth are in Northern and Eastern Europe. France recorded 2.5% growth, Austria and the Netherlands 3.5% growth. Eastern European countries that help Germany export also did well, with Slovakia at 5% and Czech Republic at 3% growth. By contrast Southern European countries, Greece, Portugal, Spain, and countries like Ireland have not benefited. German growth has not resulted in markets for other countries as German consumer spending is tight. Wal-Mart's efforts to boost its smaller stores as customers go to competitors when they make midweek trips for small basket size fill-in supplies. Sales at Wal-Mart for the year ending Jan 31, 2014, show flat sales. By comparison sales at its smaller stores and neighborhood markets were up 5%. Online sales were up 30% to $10 billion and are growing rapidly. Wal-Mart's sales forecast for 2014 are for sales to increase modestly by 3%. It will incur additional $330 million in benefit costs for healthcare under the new law for workers signing up for its healthcare plan.
