Nicholas Kristof says the strategy adopted during the Clinton administration of negotiations with the North and a partial lifting of sanctions worked better than the situation today. One criticism leveled at that agreement was that North Korea cheated and developed uranium weapon technology on the side. Yet says Kristof the situation is worse today. Under the "Agreed Framework" of the Clinton administration North Korea's Kim regime did not add to its nuclear weapons. Kristof says that policy of putting pressure on China has not worked. It would help if China did not transfer any technology to North Korea. Yet the basic policy of China remains in that it does not want renunification on the Korean peninsula that would put bring a U.S. ally on its southern border. The Bush administration and the Obama administration's policies did not lead to diplomatic progress and the world is a more dangerous place with North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile capability in 2017. Utah is hit hard by decline in construction and housing for young people who come to this part of the country to start families and settle here. It has the youngest population of any state. It also created more jobs than Pennsylvania a much bigger state by 5 times, between November 2006 and November 2007, suggesting that the boom in Utah continued long into 2007. It has also fewer retirees than states like Nevada, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho to help it cushion the impact. Sales of new homes fell 34% in the 4th quarter of 2007 and December housing permits fell 32% over November according to National Association of Realtors. Forecasts by Moddy's Economy.com state that new hopusing starts will fall 60% in 2008 worse than the hits to Nevada and Arizona the other worst hit states. This is also a harbringer of whats happening or likely to happen across the country. As Martin Feldstein put it in a pessimistic note on the ability of the Fed to improve things saying that one could only hope that those like the Fed itself, Treasury, IMF and other economists who show some growth in second half 2008, and who predict nothing worse than a temporary slowdown are correct. The influence of business executives who helped shape president Trump's views on Mexico, China, Export Import Bank, and other issues is covered by Stokols and Bender of WSJ. On Mexico the departure of Mike Flynn helped moderate views, Wilbur Ross, the Commerce Secretary also provided a moderating influence. The plans are now to change NAFTA but not entirely redo the agreement. On the Export Import Bank the views of Boeing CEO Muilenburg, who explained to Trump why the Bank supported U.S. exports and how other countries had similar banks, led to the president filling the bank vacancies. On China the influence of NEC head, Gary Cohn, former president of Goldman Sachs, and other business executives, led to a less confrontational position. The president once called NATO obsolete during the campaign but he met this week with NATO secretary general Stoltenberg this week and expressed strong support for NATO after rising tensions with Russia.
