Most of the $300 billion in Russian assets are frozen in Europe and Europe does not want to violate international law to take over the assets. Instead it chose to give Ukraine $3 billon loan based on the interest coming from the $300 billion frozen assets. This is not going to do much as over $100 billion will be needed. The US Biden administration has a different plan. It is to use the interest to finance a loan of $50 billion from the EU and the US.

This account in the WSJ shows how Masayoshi Son is making huge bets with money from Saudi, UAE borrowed at 7% interest, and his own and partners money. The first Vision Fund  which raised $100 billion was invested quickly over 2 years in startups in the U.S. with an uncertain future and the WSJ says it is unusual that a fund would pile up debt to invest in companies that are unproven and which cost the Fund billions of dollars a year in interest payments. Many of the people hired are not from venture capital and have backgrounds in speculative Wall Street deals, including Deutsche Bank, according to the WSJ. Critics say money invested in every pet walking or hotel renting website is not going to make healthy returns. Creditor are being paid back with money they lent, with interest at about $2 billion this year, according to this report.  Beyond the question of returns there is the larger question of how capital markets are malfunctioning today. Money badly needed for infrastructure and keeping up with technological developments such as 5G and new technologies, for research and development, and for vital public services in health and education to build strong societies, being diverted to highly speculative deals and dealmaking. ...

Action being taken by the IMF and the World Bank to coordinate assistance and financial help to countries facing severe crisis. Debt relief for the poorest countries including suspension of debt payments fro 14 months is one action the IMF and World Bank are pursuing with G20 countries. The IMF and World Bank have $1.2 trillion in lending resources that the two can use. In addition individual countries like the U.S. and EU countries have taken action worth $8 trillion.

Energy subsidies costing billions of dollars are keeping gas prices lower in France than other parts of the EU till December. French president Macron says a series of crises from droughts, the war in Ukraine and energy shortages will lead to an end to the abundance and called for conservation, and restraint in energy use. Scientists have determined that formaldehyde emissions from chemical and oil refineries and vehicles play a significant role in creating the smog and haze in China. After recent improvements in air quality by limiting use of coal, the focus now shifts to other sources.

OPEC fails to agree on increasing production quotas at its meeting in June 2011. Iran, Venezuela, Ecuador, and a number of other countries which have very little spare capacity were against increasing the quotas. The Saudis, the UAE, Kuwait argued for an increase because of increasing demand and disruptions in the supply from Libya and other parts of the Middle East. The Saudi oil minister described this as the most difficult OPEC meeting he has attended. Analysts expect the Saudis to increase production in the absence of an OPEC agreement.

A new internet speed record of 44 terabits per second has been set by a team from three Australian Universities. This is a million times faster than the 44 Mbps average speed in Australia. The average speed is 133 Mbps in U.S. and 67 Mbps in UK.The team used a micro-comb, a small optical chip that replaces 80 separate infrared lasers. It used normal cable technology to do the test, so that it has potential for use on current broadband networks.

Researchers in the U.S. and China team up to shows difference in the way boys and girls use their smartphones and computers. The boys tend to favor video games and the girls preferring social contact spending time going through social media programs. Evidence shows women less likely to develop internet gaming disorders, and women using programs like Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram more often than boys. Girls feel the ill effects of using these programs more than boys, often driving parents crazy.

This analysis concludes that it will be harder for developing countries to tackle job losses from robots. One problem is that taxing robot use would lead to investments in production in countries that allow robots. Opportunities exist for technology and robots in agriculture in India, by offsetting this with retraining agricultural workers for other work. President Trump's willingness to use U.S. economic strength through tariffs, sanctions and other methods comes from the view that in the decade of the 1990s and 2000s U.S. worker and the U.S. was suckered by others. In this situation it was seen as acceptable to use U.S. tariffs and economic pressure to fix a global trading system and a China trade surplus with the U.S. exceeding $300 billion a year. Mr. Lighthizer it should be remembered, now the top trade negotiator with China was also the trade negotiator with Japan when it enjoyed a similar trade surplus with the U.S. during the Reagan administration. Economic pressure did not have to be ratcheted up to this level with Japan at the time. Japan was an ally at the time in the Cold War, Today China is seen as both a global competitor in world affairs and a technological competitor. Unlike the situation with Japan many Republican and Democratic administrations had failed to tackle the growing trade imbalance with China till it had become unsustainable. The views of Mr. Trump on trade were views articulated by Mr. Lighthizer for the last ten years resulting in a shift in opinion on trade in the U.S. by 2016 where a majority of people in the U.S. felt that globalization and world trade was working against American workers and industry. Homes built entirely from wood using cross laminated timber is popular in northern Europe but hardly known in the US. One such home is shown by WSJ  for a couple who built it in Bend, Oregon after moving out of San Francisco to the high desert region of the Cascade mountains of Oregon. It uses a simple design and no hallways because of the nature of building from cross laminated timber. Architects chosen to build it after several botched efforts had a branch in Oslo, Norway, where such cross laminated timber homes are common. Timber is also chosen because of its low carbon imprint compared to the use of cement, concrete or brick.

German industry is finally accepting the government's shift out of cheap Russian energy. Robert Habeck Economy Minister proposed a plan for putting a cap on domestic heating and a gas incentivizing scheme for industry. Under the scheme industrial customers who reduce gas consumption get paid by the government. The head of the Federation of German Industries Siegfried Russwurm, says every kilowatt hour counts, we need to reduce gas consumption as much as possible." The use of coal is temporary, the renewable energy goals are more urgent than ever and phase out of coal by 2030 will still take place says VDMA,  the German mechanical Engineering association.

The European Union is making good use of the crisis in Ukraine to ramp up its shift to renewable energy. This WSJ report shows charts of where the EU is focusing its efforts from conservation, heat pumps, hydrogen, to wind and solar. Wind and solar show massive increases by 2030. By 2030 the European Union plans to increase wind and solar energy from 20 billion cubic metres to 170 billion cubic metres according to estimates from The European Commission shown in this graph by WSJ.

By the end of 2022 two thirds of Russian natural gas imports to the EU will have been replaced and by 2030 all of such imports will be replaced.

Shortages of natural gas lead to a 40% rise in prices. China is bidding high for gas supplies as it faces shortages of natural gas for heating during the coming winter. The UK and Europe also face shortages. Russia has the largest reserves of natural gas and is by far the largest producer. The start of the undersea Nordstream 2 pipeline avoids use of existing Russian pipeline through Ukraine. It is seen as a way to bring in more supplies to Europe.

Australia is another large producer of natural gas. China is now changing its import ban of Australian coal and natural gas as it faces a cold winter.

Did you know 7% of all carbon emissions today come from cement production. In the cement production process 90% of the carbon emissions come from using fossil fuels to heat up the limestone and clay to 2700 degrees to produce clinker. Cemex is workoing with Swiss company Synhelion to use solar energy to do this by 20230.  Heidelberg Materials is working to  add carbon capture to the process at its Brevik, Norway plant, then store it in the seabed near Bergen in liquefied CO2 form. This will absorb the carbon emissions to meet a goal of 8% of carbon emissions to be stored globally by 2030.
