How Sonatrach of Algeria is working in joint relationships with Statoil-Hydro of Norway, both national oil companies, who are creating a new pattern in bringing capital and technology resources of national oil companies together to tackle projects throughout the world. Statoil for example, has been invited to work with Gazprom on Shtokman gas field project in the Barents Sea. This alliance has taken may forms including Statol taking a 10% ownership in the Algerian Petroleum Institute and setting up a training program which has already trained 6000 Algerian Sonatrach employees in western health and safety standards. This Institute trains Algerian engineers. As Statoil and Sonatrach look outside for new exploration as their reserves are declining, they are working together in different parts of the world. Sonatrach and Statoil-Hydro launched a successful joint bid for 2 offshore gas deposits in Egypt. And Statoil has given Sonatrach equity in one of its North Sea gas fields and given it capacity at a liquefied natural-gas import terminal in Cove Point, Maryland. Algeria has set goals of having international reserves account for 30% of its production by 2015 by taking exploration tracts in places like Libya. Note that this type of collaboration is increasing. PFC Energy a consulting firm says that were 2 such deals for technical cooperaton and sharing access to resources and markets in 2000, in 2006 there were 16. So expect more of this type of collaboration and joint work....

With imported farm laborers not allowed into Britain during the pandemic local people volunteered for the job of berry picking during strawberry season. A professional cricket player for a team in New Zealand whose season was interrupted says its hard work but he enjoyed it. He picked 565 pounds of strawberries in about 6 hours. He says he is proud of his effort, and he thinks he did something worthwhile plus in the outdoors.

Griff Witte describes the deep differences between the young people in Greece supporting Alexis Tsipras of the Union of the Radical Left and German chancellor Merkel's insistence on austerity measures. By placing flowers at a memorial to Greek resistance fighters killed during the Nazi occupation of the country as one of his first steps after being elected, Tsipras made a symbolic move that underlined Greeks view of austerity measures that have shrunk the economy by 25%. Other left and anti-austerity parties from Spain and Italy attended the gatherings in Athens. Tsipras said in a speech following the win that it "ends, beyond any doubt, the vicious circle of austerity in our country." Syriza's economist and the likely finance minister Yanis Varoufakis says the Greece "bailouts" are finished and the government will ask for "debt forgiveness." To get an extent of the frustration in Greece with austerity measures, Varoufakis put it in these terms "Merkel is not interested in Greece. They consider us to be insufferable grasshoppers."...

At 83 years he is the most resilient and active Senator in the US. Bernie Sanders support was key for president Biden's election in 2020. “It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic party which has abandoned working-class people would find that the working class has abandoned them,” Sanders said. “First, it was the white working class, and now it is Latino and Black workers as well. While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. Unbelievably, real, inflation-accounted-for weekly wages for the average American worker are actually lower now than they were 50 years ago. “Today, despite an explosion in technology and worker productivity, many young people will have a worse standard of living than their parents. And many of them worry that Artificial Intelligence and robotics will make a bad situation even worse. “Today, despite spending far more per capita than other countries, we remain the only wealthy nation not to guarantee healthcare to all as a human right and we pay, by far, the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. One third more dads at home is a silver lining from the pandemic says The Guardian. Dads are spending more quality time with their children. In this way the lockdowns were a catalyst for a much needed change.  There has also been a change in the perception of what a good father looks like- parenting is part of the new dad's active role. Dads having tried this during the extra time they now spend doing remote work from home, say this has shown them what things look from the women's side. And it has been a positive change.

Deep polarization is seen also in South Korea. Policy issues are not being discussed with eligible voters divided evenly among progressives in their 40's and 50's and conservatives over 60 years, and about 20% of the voting public that are independents and younger voters deciding the elections in South Korea. As in the US cost of living is an issue, down to the price of onions of which president Yoon is seen as not paying attention to. Conservative People Power Party of president Yoon is expected to gain only about 100 seats of 300 seats in the National Assembly in the parliamentary election in South Korea. Yoon won in a tight race with Lee a candidate from the Liberal Democratic Party in 2022, which is expected to win about 200 of 300 Assembly seats. Yoon is building a close relationship with the US and Japan and visited the US for talks with Biden. The election is not expected to affect the close relations of US with South Korea. It reflects the polarization in South Korea, Yoon's effort for corporate tax cuts may not go through. The opposition has made allegations of corruption and abuse of power, and the cost of living, as campaign issues. About a third of 44 million eligible voters have cast votes. Younger voters and moderates appear not to trust Yoon. ...

Other collaboration is happening between John Hopkins doctors and 80 other American doctors with Wang Jian-an president of the Second Affiliated Hospital at Zhejiang University. This hospital in China sent about 170 medical workers to Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus in China.  Three areas of interest for American doctors are the clinical course of the virus, what treatments work and what does not work, treating pregnant infected women, and preventing infections among medical workers.

The US Federal Reserve, America's central bank, would rather see a recession than for inflation to get a hold in the US. Another way of saying this is that the Fed sees the American economy fundamentally strong under the Biden administration as it strengthens protections for workers and families, corrects flaws in policies for rural America and in other areas, moves to attract foreign investment and gets US companies to invest in America. This makes the danger of inflation greater than a recession, so that a policy of aggressive action with interest rates is justified.

The school shutdowns had a severe impact on UK school children. 41% of UK school children in grade 6 left school without reaching expected standards in literacy and math, in the first school year after the shutdowns. This means 275,000 11 year old children will be without the foundational skills and suffer the effects of a lack of social mobility. About 1.5 million children in UK are suffering from undeveloped speech and language skills following the pandemic.
