Asian countries with success in lifting lockdowns have adopted a centralized approach as this has given proven results in allowing the rest of society to function smoothly without lockdown, by isolating a few people who have or have come into contact with people with virus. In a crisis of this magnitude with the huge risks involved democracies such as South Korea and Taiwan, other Asian countries, and now Britain, see less risk in relying on the centralized approach, because it works more effectively to accomplish the task of limiting spread and letting society function without lockdown.

Michael Crawley has some advice for running in his new book "Out of Thin Air," describing his experiences running in the high altitude conditions of Ethiopia. There one does not run on roads but in backcountry conditions. Runners do not go fast to conserve energy in the thin air. Crawley is preparing for the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Running uphill has some special benefits during the pandemic, because of the benefits to health. And it helps to keep out distracting thoughts and just put on shoes, then get out and run. Experts say a power struggle is likely to take place in the Senate that would slow legislation. Archaic and old rules in the Senate of the U.S. may not help in this situation leading to new legislation getting stymied in the Senate.

The delay to dealing with the impeachment trial to February 9 in the Senate also makes it likely that old party attitudes and partisan behavior will cause distractions to the essential parts of the Biden agenda.

The Moto X model has not sold well in competition with Apple and Samsung smartphones. Google will retain 15,000 of 17,000 patents acquired as part of the Motorola acquisition, patents worth billions of dollars and helping it defend its Android mobile operating system. Google sold Motorola Home which made setup boxes to Arris in 2012 for $2.35 billion. Motorola Mobility had $2.9 billion in cash at the time of the acquisition. Under a plan called "premium support" Paul Ryan's U.S. budget proposal would have seniors choose a private insurance plan from a federally operated exchange. Each year the government would pay private insurers a specific amount to cover the cost of premiums with the rest borne by seniors. The total amount paid by the government would go up only at the rate of overall inflation, it would not go up at the higher rate of health care inflation. By doing this the government would take off the trillions of dollars of projected spending on health care that are largely the result of the higher inflation rate in health care costs. This higher inflation rate on health care costs is something that both parties have failed to control, and remains a major weakness in all health care proposals to date, including the Obama health care legislation. Allowed to continue growing at this rate when U.S. debt to GDP is nearing 100%, health care inflation costs pose major risks to the nation's finances.

DY Chandrachud and his father CY Chandrachud will soon be the first father son combination of Supreme Court Chief Justices in Indian history. This has not happened in Britain or US. CY Chandrachud was Chief Justice of the SupremeCourt of India from 1978 to 1985. DY Chandrachud was part of a three member bench of the Indian Supreme Court that looked at The Modi government vaccination policy in April 2021 and gave a ruling that formed the basis of Mr. Modi's action for a new and broader vaccination policy that ensured access to the entire Indian population of 1.2 billion people.
