About half of UK adults reported experiencing high levels of anxiety says the Office of National Statistics for the the first lockdown. During the second lockdown the fatigue coming from that period in March and the higher level of cases is likely to have increased the number of adults experiencing anxiety. Anxiety was experienced from the loneliness and the effect of the coronavirus on work. A quarter of all adults reported increased sleeplessness. Stockpiling, overworking, irritability, micro-managing, and alcohol consumption, are some of the erratic responses to this level of added anxiety. Experts suggest different responses. leadership and incremental change to put the problem into context. Such as in the case of coronavirus the important behaviours that one can control such as masking properly, social distancing properly, ventilating and cleaning the air with aircleaners, using necessary caution in outside exposure by limiting to the essential, and taking nutrients for defence against virus, other actions. After putting these in place the risks can be minimized.  At that point focusing on the present is seen by experts as the right way to respond. Get through this period or this week first, leave the next week or the next period for next time. To do this  baking, reading, hobbies, running, walking, yoga, gardening, and outdoors, a whole range of other activities including watching sports, listening to radio and music, all fall into this. Spending time doing things that make us happy. A good exercise is asking how does this make me feel, am I more relaxed? am I happier? Put things in perspective, is this catastrophising? Is this making it bigger than it is? Can I put away the illusion of control when control requires some higher power such as God. Can I leave that part to God, to the divine. Cognitive behavioural thinking modification is a way of tackling stress, loneliness, and the depression and anixety that feed on each other. Being aware that we may have wrong behavioural responses, asking questions about how accurate our thinking about things that pose threatening situations is, are helpful in tackling the anxiety.   Just breaking the pattern of behavioural responses of repetitive thinking is helpful by engaging in other activities. Meditation is helpful. Yoga is helpful. In this pandemic learning about nutrition and increasing one's knowledge of food, eating and exercizing right, of cooking, is a useful way of turning a negative into a positive.     ...

About 10% of the $100 billion in remittances each year from Indians overseas come to the state of Kerala. Life span is about 75 years in Kerala exceeding the national life span of 69 years. However this is looking at it backwards as India remains a vibrantly young country even with the advances in longevity where much of India is close to age 70 years in longevity and advances in medical care and health are taking place at a rapid pace. The Labour party takes the Rutherglen parliament seat from SNP with Labour's Michael Shanks winning twice the votes of the SNP candidate. Scotland can now lead the way to a Labour government. In his speech Keir Starmer, Labour's leader said he would put Scotland at the "heart of a Britain to last." Labour stands for working people across all these islands, "there is nothing more important." That Labour stands for an argument for Britain, an old partnership perhaps, but a flame now reignited to  face a modern flame of insecurity." On the Scottish nationalists and their party the SNP Starmer said- "Once again they will wave away the lessons of history, try to present nationalism as a bridge to the world. We have to remind them that it can barely provide a ferry to the Hebrides."

Also suggested are exercises that may help in each of 9 categories of the test. This Guardian report gives a discussion with Austin based Dr. Attia of Early Medical and ways to ensure healthspan- adopting healthy patterns of living including food and exercize, sleep, that start at an early age. The approach is that prevention should be the best way to tackle health issues that can develop later in life and the time for that is early, right now. Most of it is well established based on exercizing well, and weight exercize routine for strengthening muscle. It could just as easily include yoga or pilates, and sports. Nutrition plays an equally important part.

The CBI Institute of Directors and the British Chamber of Commerce tell The Times that there is no desire for massive deregulation in Britain. Jonathan Portes, professor at Kings College, London, even calls the Singapore comparison, that Britain would even resemble a low cost Asian economy "a fantasy."

Britain spends 35% of GDP on public services, Singapore spends 14% on public services. After Covid experts call this a sheer stretch of the imagination. More likely Britain could enhance growth through its interconnections with a rapidly growing Indian economy, with which it has strong ties of history, immigration and culture.

Ezra Klein cites Ed Luce, who writes in the Financial Times, that the real unemployment rate in the U.S. is 11%, when you count people who have no job but have given up looking after months of fruitless searching. These are the long term unemployed and pose risks for the economy and for society. Compared to 2007, the percent of people in the U.S with a job or actively looking for work has dropped from 62.7% to 58.5%. Luce's 11% is arrived at by considering these 62.7%, including millions of workers who have quit looking but would start looking again if the labor market brightens. This is important because U.S. government statistics show unemployment dropping below 9% in November 2009, supposedly an improvemment, when its actually the reverse that is actually happening. The real underemployment is nearly 20%.

This Times report looks at the management style of Jeff Bezos who started Amazon as a online store selling books and the extraordinary growth of the company. Bezos is stepping down from the day to day role of CEO to focus on new growth opportunities. His role as CEO will be taken by the head of the cloud computing business, Andy Jassy. He joined in 1997. Amazon was started in 1994.  Amazon's growth comes from carefully focussing on specific growth fields, first retail, then cloud computing, and changing the way business is run with innovative ways of conducting business. One click and Prime in retail, Kindle e reader in books, and massive investments in logistics, warehousing, cloud computing to run its business efficiently. During the pandemic criticism of low wages for warehouse workers was met with an increase in wages to $15 an hour.  Management style discourages meetings. Most meetings are held in the morning, and after 10 am. The person presenting is asked to hand out a six page memo which is read in silence before the meeting. The idea is that writing it out helps make the ideas clear. Decisions are made in this way. Employees are asked to think in innovative ways to run the business. Thrift is practiced as part of the Bezos way. Bezos is relatively young, only 57 years. Bezos was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1964 when his mother was in high school. His mother married a Cuban immigrant, Miguel Bezos 4 years later and the boy took the name Bezos. He spent much time at his grandparents ranch in South Texas working on the farm, and went to school at Princeton University, graduating in 1987. In 1993 he married Mackenzie Tuttle, a novelist, then started an online bookstore called Amazon from Seattle. Before this he worked at a telecom company and at a hedge fund, which helped him finance his new online bookstore. Much of the US jobs market is stalled with a "noticeable deterioration" by June says the Fed. Companies are not laying off people, yet they are also not hiring. The class of 2025 faces a job market with a real slowdown. Hiring has dropped 44% compared to June 2022 says one payrolls company Gusto looking at data from 400,000 businesses. The economy has 4% unemployment, yet for new college graduates it is 6.6% for 12 months ending May 2025. Some companies are pushing back dates of hire into 2026.

This report in The Guardian shows that ChatGPT is nothing new. The first version of this kind of generative AI was developed in 1966 at MIT by a computer scientist Weizenbaum, who called it Eliza. The buzz around it like that around ChatGPT was that it was thinking and acting on its own, the way humans like to think it did, but in fact Weizenbaum showed that it was simply code written to take what was given to the computer as input and spitting it out in a different way that made it look that it was acting on its own, when it clearly was nothing but parroting it out like a parrot. The issue of turning our world over to robots based on AI is controversial and even dangerous. A Japanese futuristic movie shows how the man who has written the code for the master computer that runs everything in Japan is disillusioned about it and finds himself in a nightmare world where the machine tries to isolate and eliminate the man who created it. Machines cannot think or have emotions like humans do and it is these emotions, rethinking, that the world depends on for its survival. Can anyone say that a machine would have made the decision that Chinese president Jinping just made in January of making a complete u turn and moving away completely from lockdowns into a complete opening with a plan that appears to have worked and is reviving China's economy following the street protests by informal groups including young women? ...

This Perspectives piece in the DW.com says the German government has little option but to support the federal Leipzig court ruling in favor of banning diesel cars in cities with high pollution levels. It says the best days of diesel engine cars are over in Germany and in Europe. Tankersley of The Washington Post looks at a 30 page analysis of Trump's economic policies by his two senior advisors Peter Navarro, UC Irvine economist, and Wilbur Ross. In it the authors say Trump will be able to increase economic growth from 2% to 3.5% by providing a better and even playing field for American companies in the way they compete with other countries. It means the renegotiation of treaties with these countries will lead to better trade for the U.S. This would include they say the U.S. saying it would leave the WTO unless changes are made. The authors say that with Trump in the White House unfair trading practices would end, instead of it leading to trade wars as some other economists believe.
