The new Australian budget is designed to generate a slight surplus from the A$44 billion deficit for the fiscal year ending June 30. This prepares the Australian government of Julia Gillard for elections in 2013. The budget depends on the mining boom to generate the tax revenues for planned economic growth of over 3% in 2012-2013. This is based on the large number of projects planned for investments in oil, gas and other energy projects, valued at US$456 billion. GE as supplier of turbines and other products to the Chevron-Total gas project and other projects in Australia, has sales in Australia match its sales level in China in 2012-2013. This gives an idea of the extent of the boom in the mining and energy sector. Even the widening trade deficit to A$1.59 in March 2012 reflects large imports for the mining sector. The weakness of this approach is that too much is dependent on the mining and offshore gas boom. Retail spending is weak and Australia is increasingly looking like a two tier economy, subject to the boom and bust cycles that its mining companies have experienced in the past. A bubble in Australia's housing markets and uncertainties in the global economy pose other risks....

Lenovo's efforts to increase sales in India and Brazil. Lenovo is the largest PC company in India with 15.8% market share in the first quarter of 2012. It has only 3.6% market share in Brazil and is planning to increase its market share in the Brazilian market. Its market share in China is 30%. Slowing sales in China is increasing the focus on growth in Latin America. Lenovo's head of Asia-Pacific and Latin America, Milko van Duijl says Lenovo will have to build a manufacturing presence in Brazil to be successful there. Lenovo is now the second largest in PC sales worldwide after H-P.

The Aadmi Common Man party does well in New Delhi elections. The Congress party sees a large loss of seats in all three major election states. The ruling national Congress party sees its support erode as a result of corruption and mismanagement of the economy, and younger voters dissatisfied with the party.

A new Arizona law tells school districts they would lose 10% of their state education funds if their ethnic studies programs do not comply with state standards. Programs that are not allowed are programs that advocate ethnic solidarity, are primarily for one race, or promote resentment toward a race. Classes in the Tucson Unified School District's Mexican-American program have been declared illegal. Arizona's attorney general Tom Horne, declared the classes illegal, in violation of a state law going into effect Jan 1, 2011. Other programs for black, Asian and American Indian students have not been affected. All this is happening in the midst of fierce protests about the state's immigration laws. Mr. Horne, was superintendent of public instruction for Arizona before becoming attorney general. At that time he wrote a law challenging Tucson's ethnic studies program, which the legislature passed and Governor Jan Brewer signed into law in May 2010. It takes aim at texts used in the classes, such as "Occupied America," and "The Pedagogy of the Oppressed."...

Did you know that SUV's are the second largest source of emissions after Power. We hear a lot about aviation which is much smaller but little about SUV's in the impact on climate change. SUV's make up about 40% of cars in Britain, and higher in the U.S. at 43%, 40% worldwide an astounding sixfold increase from 32 million to 200 million since 2010. People may even be driving an SUV and talking a lot about climate change.

Any savings from electric cars expected to grow from 2 million to 20 million by 2030  will be offset by more SUV's on the road. This is the view of the International Energy Agency in its recent report. Again all the talk about electric cars as a way to address climate change misses what is really happening in automobiles. Even in China the SUV's make up 42% of sales, and in India 30%. It is more profitable to make SUV's and they are harder to electrify adding 25% to energy consumed compared to cars.

China's huge trade surplus with the U.S. continues to grow even after President Trump imposed tariffs on Chinese imports. China's total exports have risen by 15.6% from a year earlier, higher than the 14.5% increase year over year in September. Exports to India, Hong Kong, grew by more than 20% in October over a year earlier.  By Chinese figures China's trade surplus with the U.S. of $260 billion for 10 months of 2018 is up 15% from year earlier, ready to set another record. This does not tally with what the U.S. says it is, with the U.S. estimate of the trade gap at $375.2 billion, over $1 billion each and every day. Previous administrations of both Republican and Democratic parties put up with the trade surplus or did little. President Trump has taken this up as a big issue and imposed tariffs on Chinese goods in a series of actions. The combined U.S. and Chinese tariffs now cover 60% of their trade in goods after the latest round of tit for tat tariffs. Experts say there is front loading of Chinese exports which accounts for the sharp increase in exports to beat the date when tariffs go into effect. Yet the overall increase in China's exports, with an added impetus from a stronger dollar suggests that the trade gap with the U.S. is a problem that will fester for a while till the trends are reversed.  ...

Xiaomi, a maker of smartphones in China, traded for about US$2.15 per share on the Hong Kong stock market on July 9, 2018 after its IPO. Xiaomi was valued at US$43 billion, about half of the value that was expected. Reasons given by experts are that Xiaomi is one of a number of smartphone makers in the highly competitive Chinese market. Xiaomi has about half of its sales in India and other countries where it sells low cost smartphones with more value based on features included. Problems that it experienced in Brazil in connecting with national carriers made investors cautious about Xiaomi's market position in other developing countries. Limiting its profitability is its position as a hardware maker in a competitive market, without the profitability of other internet companies. Xiaomi surged in the last decade in China as a local producer of smartphones that provided features of more expensive brands at a lower price. India's central bank governor, Raghuram Rajan, announces a interest rate reduction of the benchmark rate by one quarter percentage point to 7.75 percent on Jan. 14, 2014. He had come under criticism from business for not lowering rates at the Dec. 2, 2014 meeting, after the decline in oil prices. Rajan notes in his news release that when he left rates at the same level on Dec. 2, the policy statement said clearly- "once the monetary policy stance shifts, subsequent policy actions will be consistent with this stance." In the NYT interview with Keith Bradsher, Rajan pointed out that more information was needed to confirm that low crude oil price environment was going to last. India imports about $100 billion in crude oil and is a key beneficiary of lower oil prices, at a time when the energy infrastructure and supplies are lagging behind causing a severe bottleneck for growth. The current situation points to inflationary pressures easing. Dec. 2014 inflation was 5%. Prices have fallen for fruits and vegetables since Sept.2014, and cereal price pressures are also easing. ...

The chairman of India's Tata Group, Ratan Tata, talks to the WSJ's Paul Beckett. Tata Group now employs 357,000 people and gets 65% of saes from overseas. He describes the difficulties with the Jaguar and land Rover acquisition. And says Tata Motors did very well to extinguish $3 billion in debt arising from the acquisitions by raisng new capital, liquidating some assets and doing away with loose practices. The experience at the new location in Gujarat for the Tata Nano minicar is very positive and production is planned for January 2010. He has some words for India's government, saying that India will remain an agricultural country unless the government finds some better way to fairly and justly compensate farmers for their land where industrializaton is takng place. He sees an alien view of industrial development in W. Bengal and says Tata is better off from being away from that place. For the US and Indian firms operating in the outsourcing space he has some advice. He wants Indian companies to be sensitive to the American unemployment situation, the stress being felt by jobless people, and that its important not to be aggressive and alien to pain that is going on in the USA.
