Their grasp of the world trading system was meager and they stepped in at a time when the world had economically not recovered from World War I, and the French against US General Pershing's advice had set the most punitive arrangement in Germany that crushed Germany after an armistice Pershing opposed that left the Kaiser's political structures intact. It is just that this was a kind of Marshall Plan for Asia of the US to let poor countries such as Japan war wrecked in 1950, and China colonial power wrecked by first Britain then Japan struggling and poor in 1990's, giving them some time to rebuild by ignoring unfair barriers to trade for 10-15 years 2005 for China. Barriers that never got dismantled and technology that leaked from the US 2005-2016 under the Obama administration. Smoot Hawley was not about the US Navy building its own ships and US shipyards in the 1920's. In 2025 US shipbuilding industry is stolen, this is why the words used "pillaged" "looted" were used in the Rose Garden. Little by little American private enterprise capitalism was superseded by a new form of capitalism in Japan then in China that combined state capitalism with private enterprise capitalism. This then was the threat America faced, and needed to redouble its energies and seek fair play.   ...

Years of failure of politicians in Congress in Brazil, and poor decisions in running the government by the Worker's Party by overspending leaving little money for services, sanitation, health and other priorities, leads to Brazil turning to a former army officer in the 2018 elections. Corruption charges with collusion of politicians and the state owned oil company on contracts known as the Car Wash scandal further damaged the reputation of politicians in the Worker's Party. Jair Bolsonaro was elected to Brazil's Congress in 1990 after a short period in the military at a time when democratic institutions were being restored in Brazil following decades of military dictatorship. By 2014 after two terms in office the Worker's Party led by a former automobile plant worker Da Silva had lost popular support with overspending, failure to upgrade public services and neglect of basic infrastructure such as sanitation, leading to widespread protests. In the 2014 congressional elections Bolsonaro won by nearly 500,000 votes, leading to his bid to run for president from a small party which had the support of Brazil's military. The military played a role in supporting the Getulio Vargas administration from 1930-1945, which pushed industrialization in Brazil and set minimum wage, workers rights. Democracy was restored by 1945 after Brazil sided with the U.S. in the war. In 1964 the administration of Joao Goulart was overthrown in a military coup after popular discontent and protests. Democracy was restored in 1985 with centrist parties playing apart till the election of the Worker's Party under Ignacio Lula in 2008. Six years into his administration by 2014 issues of overspending and poor management of public services led to loss of popular support for the Workers Party as the public looked for alternatives to combat crime, improve public services and address problems of lack of spending on sanitation, public services, health care. The collapse of the commodities pricing boom led to higher unemployment and a shrinking economy leading to unrest and public protests.  ...

How will posterity view Angela Merkel. As she ends a fourth term this BBC News report says it will remain a contested legacy. Much of what went right has already been written. A woman, a pragmatic scientist who hewed to the center not just as a scientist but with a knack for politics. Much of her early period in office was one in which she had to tackle the eurozone crisis. The euro's weakness had its roots in the way Mr Kohl allowed eurozone membership for countries such as Greece without adequate entry requirements. Some of the other problems were also left behind by an overzealous mentor Helmut Kohl who pushed for German reunification that never really happened in terms of bringing all east Germans into the idea of the Federal Republic. These problems in a neglected eastern part of Germany around Dresden were never tackled by Merkel. They were social issues that Merkel's pragmatic thinking failed to grasp. Letting in migrants from Arab and African countries was a move that Merkel made without realizing the full implications. This policy was reversed but led to the emergence of extreme right wing sentiment in parts of the country. It is left to a future German leader to tackle the social and economic disparities that affect Germany today. As time passes people reflect and a more careful view prevails. Dr Rudiger Schmitt-Beck reflects this when he says that the Merkel years were about  a bizarre mix of modernization and backwardness. Merkel rejected nuclear energy after the events at Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan. As a scientist she was able to tackle such issues. Yet on the major social issues of the day Prof. Schmitt-Beck of the University of Mannheim, says she left Germany "grotesquely behind"- on child care, climate policy, digitization, infrastructure building, on demographic change. These are the issues that the Social Democrats and the Greens are standing up for today. Ironically Merkel may be remembered more for something that is not even mentioned in this BBC report. This is the European solidarity shown by action to financially support all EU countries including Italy with EU funding during the coronavirus pandemic.  This may be her biggest achievement because it will be lasting. Without it Europe would not be the better place it is today, resilient in the face of the pandemic.  Seen from outside Merkel will be seen as a German leader who failed to see the potential for India and other Asian countries with almost twice the population of China. Fascinated with 13 visits to China she studied Chinese history, politics and economics, says the WSJ. And did too little to balance Germany's close business and trade ties with China, with efforts in India and other countries. Seen from America as pointed out in the WSJ front page on September 23, Merkel made no effort to rebuild US relations with the Biden administration after the tumultuous period under presidents Obama with spying on her phone and with Mr. Trump over the EU's participation in NATO defense. She seemed resigned to a view that America had seen her best years, a belief that today does not exist anywhere in America. US president Biden's first phone call to Merkel was put off for a few days says the WSJ, and Merkel continued to build close ties with China, ignoring the fact that this was a new administration closer to that of presidents FDR and Harry Truman who did so much for Germany. And a president very different than any of Biden's five predecessors. ...

The world did just fine in the time upto the year 2000. Social media is a relatively recent phenomenon and around for a short time to be thought of just as a fad that came and passed like so many fads before this. News media is best done by those with the accumulated experience of generations and not by social media or tech companies. Life could return to a better state of affairs that existed before all the turmoil from social media and so called tech in news that almost ditched the greatest democracy in the world. And provided the distractions from the dangers that now threaten the Free World in America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa from pandemics, food security, dependence on foreign manufacturing, high inflation, mental health, and threats from Russia and China. ...

Mr. Andrew Bailey, the top financial regulator, chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority, takes over as the next governor of the Bank of England. He has held several positions in the Bank of England including as head of a group that studied the global economy. He left in 2016 to head the FCA. The Bank of England last changed interest rates in August 2018, raising it to 0.75% from 0.5%. Uncertainties remain with Brexit even after the election victory of Boris Johnson because Brexit plans are to get it done including negotiations very quickly.  One change from before is that both the Bank of England and the government of Mr. Johnson are committed to keeping steady growth. The Bank supporting the economy and Mr. Johnson with plans to spend heavily on infrastructure, NHS and schools. It was this plan that helped Mr. Johnson win support across England. Anil Ambani's Reliance Communication's is being investigated in India's Telecom scandal.The shares of his public companies have fallen by 50% or $17.9 billion since August 2009, according to an estimate by Bloomberg. A report by Kotak Securities Ltd, says Reliance Communications reported higher revenue numbers to investors than it showed to telecom regulators. This has led to a government audit of Reliance Commmunications. The market value of his publicly traded companies fell on Feb 9, 2010, by $2.9 billion, when an Indian accountants association questioned Reliance's finances that day. Total debt of Reliance Commnications, Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure Ltd, is $10 billon larger than cash and equivalents according to Bloomberg.

The Rousseff administration announces plans to cut $30 billion in 2011 spending. Inflation is up by about 6% in January. Most of the cuts says Finance Minister Mantega, will be achieved by cutting earmarks added to the budget, and by slowing hiring in the public sector. But analysts say this will not be sufficient to control inflationary pressures, as 2011 spending will still be above 2010. Higher inflation puts pressure on the central bank to raise interest rates at an high of 11.25%, which in turn brings in speculative money and creates a highly overvalued currency.

U.S. President Richard Nixon adopted Keynesian policies to boost the economy after tightening monetary policy failed in 1970. In 1971 Nixon turned to higher fiscal spending to get the economy closer to full employment. He also adopted wage and price controls. By 1972 the economy had recovered, inflation was at 5.7% and unemployment at 4.9%, and Nixon won re-election. This was the only recovery in an election year since World War II. In international affairs Nixon's policy was to leave the Bretton Woods system and floating the dollar. With a new administration in 1974 inflation surged to 11% and unemployment to 5.6%, because wage and price controls worked only for a short period.

This NYT piece suggests that 9 new members for the 30 member board have already been named and none of them are non Japanese. So the similiar WSJ piece stands corrected as these new members have already been named. With 2.54 million cars sold in the US and about half imported from Japan this does not reflect internationalization by any stretch of the imagination, as the NYT puts it the rest are all "graying salarymen". Toyota still reflects its narrow parochial centre in Aichi prefecture around Nagoya and growth has not changed the outlook. Compare this with Sony. There are advantages for Toyota in its hometown centred way of doing things so as not to be distracted by the latest management fad, and maintain focus on quality and efficiency but considering the expansion in overseas markets its amazing that the Board should be so underrepresented with other nationalities.

Here he describes his views on the way Agenda 2010 was implemented in 2003 in Germany to gain public support for changes to Germany's welfare state. Schroeder says it was right to give Greece more time to make the reforms, so that the Greek people could see that this path would help in a positive way. In doing this he cites his own experience when as the reforms for Agenda 2010 to make Germany more competitive were taking place- including cuts in spending and lower taxes- he turned down his finance minister Hans Eichel's proposal in 2003 for an additional 20 billion euros in cuts to put Germany in compliance with EU law....

About 90 of Republicans, half of Democrats, and two thirds of Independents think support for transgender rights in government and society have gone too far. The situation about allowing transgender persons in women's locker rooms offends most women. Abortion rights is an issue for two thirds of women but half of the same women think transgender rights having gone too far, they cannot support transgender people in their daughter's locker rooms at school. Cultural issues such as these inflamed the situation with the signs in Madison Square Garden saying "transgender the hell out of locker rooms in our schools." What would FDR and Frances Perkins say about this, their whole lives spent trying to figure out a way for unemployment insurance and stabilizing employment. The net result is that only about 20-25% of women thought abortion was the issue, and 60-70% saw the economy as the main issue. ...

The Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers meet i Sao Paulo, Brazil. On the side the BRIC countries finance minsters hold their first meeting. Brazilian President Da Silva calls for greater say for the BRIC countries and for countries like Argentina, Mexico, South Africa, Nigeria, S. Korea and other large developing country economies in shaping the new global financial architecture. There is extreme frustration in Brazil that all their efforts to build a better life for millions of Brazilians may come to nought, and the first real sustained growth in decades that came to Brazil may now be cut short abruptly with huge cost to millions or rural and urban poor, a fate shared by all the BRIC and other developing countries. Wall Street source of the crisis remains closed to the BRIC and developing countries in the sense that what goes on there is determinied by insiders from the G7 countries, but the severe consequences of a fallout in Wall Street on trade and credit hit these countries just when there was hope for millions to live a better life. Just as when the Asian crisis and other crises hit in the last two decades there is a lot of talk about global financial architecture with Treasury's Rubin then and IMF's Kahn and World Bank's Zoellick now making statements, but no clue except to accept the need for getting the large developing countries of the G20 to the table for concerted action. ...

The issue of inequality is arousing public sentiment in Germany with this becoming an election issue along with the euro crisis and energy reform. The term Gerechtigkeit means "justice" in German and is associated with the idea of equality. The Social Democrats Party and the Greens talk about this in terms of "social scissors" opening wider. The Minder Initiative which passed in Switzerland enabling shareholders to restrict executive pay has led to public discussion in Germany for a similiar approach to be adopted by Germany. The ruling Christian Democratic Party (CDU) of Angela Merkel and the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) party are different from other parties in Europe because of their Catholic and Lutheran roots which favor social solidarity. The FDP party in the ruling coalition supports free market principles but lacks popular support. The Economist cites the work of the German think tank DIW on inequality, which shows inequality showing sharp rise after German reunification around 1991, especially in East Germany. The situation moderates with improvements in inequality in East Germany and a slight improvement in West Germany after 2005. Both East and W. Germany have moved up overall in the Ginni coefficeint which measures inequality from about 0.4 in 1991 to about 0.5 in 2010, showing that the situation has stabilized at a higher level of inequality. Part of this could be because of the shift to temporary workers at lower wages about this time as German industry made efforts to keep wages down and improve competitiveness, even as overall conditions in the economy improved in the last decade. The Economist cites another study by the Initiative for a New Social Market Economy, a German think tank, which compares Germany with other members of the OECD. Germany ranks closer to Scandinavian countries in seventh place in this study, but does poorly in equal oportunities with 14th place. Germany lags behind other OECD and European countries in opportunities for women to work full time. Germany lacks enough daycare facilities for small children so that their mothers can work full time. There is a shortage of about 150,000 for preschool daycare openings in Germany, acccording to information cited by Deutsche Welle from government sources....
