Voters believe these tech companies are not paying their "fair share." There is also no clear idea on whether clean energy is pushing up prices of electricity or whether the cancellation of clean energy projects including the ones that make sense  are pushing up electricity prices, with voters going both ways in their perceptions. With a rapidly shrinking gap between India+ Japan and China, the US can finally put to rest the burdens of conflict such as the 1930's Japanese invasion of China, the war after pearl Harbor in the Pacific, the Korean conflict, and the Vietnam conflict in which America and its people shouldered huge burdens. ...

Uber and Lyft, ride-hailing apps are adding to the traffic in downtown areas of major cities in the U.S. It is getting worse to the point where cities are looking for ways to ease the congestion in downtown areas of Chicago, San Francisco, New York, New fees are being enacted in these cities on Uber and Lyft, and regulators are also considering fees. The problem is that ride sharing apps customers prefer not to pool or share rides as the ride sharing apps said they would to prevent congestion. Another problem is that Uber and Lyft are actually pulling people away from buses, subways and walking creating new waves of congestion and poor utilization of public transportation designed to ease travel for most of the post war period. Worse they are not supporting healthy living because it is harder to walk on traffic congested streets and some people become lazy and just grab a ride rather than walk a short distance or walk to public transportation. Another issue is that an estimated 40% of the time the Uber and Lyft drivers in major cities cruise around for fares without passengers. San Francisco county officials have found in a study that over 60% of the slowdown of traffic speeds in San Francisco between 2010 and 2016 was due to the introduction of ride hailing apps. In Chicago, the policy director in the mayor's office says there is exponential growth in traffic congestion from these ride hailing apps.  A December report by the California Air Resources Board found that ride- hailing cars are driving with no passengers 39% of the time, and New York city estimates cruising at 41%. Mr. Schaller, a New York City official who has studied this issue says surveys in many cities show about 60% of riders in Uber and Lyft would have walked, biked or taken public transit or stayed home if a ride hail car was'nt available. More and more so called disruption by Silicon Valley in the interest of rapid and chaotic growth is looking like a bad thing, says this report in the WSJ, creating a whole new set of problems. What is not even understood here is the vast misallocation of resources, the billions of dollars that could have improved public transportation, bike paths and other means of getting around, improvements in cities downtowns to make them friendlier and with new park spaces with those dollars invested there instead of in ride hailing apps.   ...

He had only 24 hours to recover before the semifinals game against Italy's Mussetti and seemed very worried. It shows the effort put into the games by athletes in the face of adversity. In cycling overcoming tire punctures and precious seconds, in rowing 0.18 seconds separating Netherlands women's scull quad from the second place,  injuries of women's rower Brayshaw in a horse riding accident and a British rower who came back from a surgery after a bike accident to win gold.

American women outperformed at the Rio Olympic Summer Games by winning 27 gold medals compared to 18 for the American men. A big part of why this was possible is that women have equal access to sports gained with the education amendment Title IX in 1972. One of every two American girls participate in sports in high school. More women watched the Summer Olympics in Rio than men. Seeing American women do so well acts a role model for young girls watching and thinking "I can do that."  Thirty years ago this was not the case. A lot has changed since then. This is especially true for black women in the games with African American athletes, Simone Biles in gymnastics, Simone Manuel in swimming, Ashleigh Johnson in water polo. With the success comes an effort to try new sports to break more barriers.

Laurence Meyer of Macroeconomics Advisors, a former Fed governor, says monetary policy will offset the effects of tighter fiscal policies and budget cuts. This is not stated explicitly he says, but Bernanke will counteract the effects of budget cuts and austerity policies by putting off rate hikes. The expiry in December 2011 of a compromise reached between the GOP and Obama to lower payroll taxes and offering business a tax break on capital investment will lead to a reduction in GDP by 1% in 2012, according to Mark Zandl, of Moody's Analytics. Pressure for budget cuts could add another half percentage point reduction in GDP, according to IHS Consultants. Bernanke will be mindful of these considerations as he considers any rate hikes in 2012.

It might come as a surprise to know as Roshan Kishore points out in this analysis in The Hindustan Times that the educational levels and incomes of Tory or Conservative voters in the UK are the opposite of what they used to be. The graphs shown here show that as education levels increases in different income segments there are significantly more Labour supporters than Conservative supporters. For Rishi Sunak this means he runs into the same problems that faced Johnson and Truss, of matching austerity cuts in spending that will be unpopular with the lower income support base with lower educational levels in the Tory party. His privileged background will only make the cuts in the middle of interest rate hikes and inflation appear as basically unfair to this support base. This is what Gerard Baker pointed out in the WSJ calling it an invitation for "abject chaos" that comes from Tories trying to represent working class families. The German government's committee on the future of transport has proposals that call for fuel price hikes and electric vehicle quotas as Germany faces heavy European fines for not reducing transport emissions since 1990. This means the stretches of unlimited speed on the Autobahn roadways in Germany may now have speed limits. The proposals include limits of 80 mph on roadways and fuel tax rises from 2023, abolition of tax breaks for diesel cars, quotas for electric and hybrid cars that could get half of the emission cuts needed.
