"Bluetec " is the European competitor to Japanese hybrid technologies, if it can be made environmentally friendly (with urea and other additives to reduce bad emissions) the its a real competitor to hybrids. French submarine contract was cancelled as US shows willingness to provide nuclear submarine technologies to Australia. French diesel submarines were too slow and could not remain underwater for long periods. Nuclear submarines would let Australia monitor Indo-Pacific seas, with US help. This is now an issue as Taiwan is being threatened and Australia faces economic coercion in trade relations from China. VW's Dieselgate settlement required it to spend $2 billion on electric charging stations in the US to compensate society for air pollution caused by its faulty diesel engines. The Washington Post looks at these EV charging stations and finds many of these do not work. An author of a reliability study on charging stations Prof. David Rempel of UC Berkeley says there should have been more oversight as he considers it to be public money. About 80% of these charging attempts are successful at 4000 fast chargers run by Electrify America according to JD Power, and customer satisfaction is low.

French farmers problems with rising costs are leading to protests in Paris and its surrounding highways. France lost about 20% of its farms in the decade 2010 to 2020, about 101,000 farms. Another 200,000 farmers reach retirement age by 2026, what happens to these farms is uncertain given the prevailing environment where farming is seen as a struggle to mmet rising costs and regulations, increase in cost of diesel to meet climate goals. One farmer says in France 24 that many young people avoid self employment because they would end up making less than a farm worker, which should not be the case.

Rupert Stadler, CEO of Audi brand of VW, is arrested on Dec. 19, 2018, in connection with the diesel emissions scandal. He is the only member of VW Executive Board to be arrested. Prosecutors raided Mr. Stadler's home and looked for evidence in the investigation. Mr. Stadler says he will cooperate by giving testimony.

Diesel prices are regulated and subsidized by the Indian government, but gasoline prices are deregulated since 2010, resulting in gasoline costing 64% more than diesel in India. As a result buyers are staying away from gasoline cars and shifting to diesel creating distortions in demand. The government is considering a tax on diesel cars and SUV's of between $3000 to $4600 to correct the distortion. Because lower income people woud be hurt by increasing the price of diesel it continues to be subsidized. Because of the uncertainty car manufacturers are shutting down production to reduce growing inventory of gasoline vehicles. High interest rates of 12% on car loans also reduces demand. Suzuki Maruti sales declined 6% in May 2012, Ford and GM showed sales declines of 14% and 20%. The year ending March 2012 shows Indian car sales growing only slightly by 2.2% to 2 million cars. Sales were rising at 29% only about a year ago. Gasoline costs 68 rupees a liter in New Delhi after a 11.5% increase in May 2012, compared to 41 rupees per liter for diesel. The increase in gasoline prices is a result of the government having difficulty paying the rising imports of oil, costing $141 billion for the year ending March 31, 2012. The sharp slowdown in the car industry and the problems in the energy sector have affected India's growth rate....

Tax changes for autombiles as part of a"fiscal correction" were announced by the Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee. The base excise tax on most goods manufactured in India was raised from 10% to 12%. The excise tax on larger cars with gasoline engines above 1.2 litres or diesel engines above 1.5 litres was raised to 24% from 22%. The customs tax on imported cars and SUV's over $40,000 and gasoline engine over 3000 cubic centimetres, or diesel engine over 2500 cubic centimetres was increased to 75% from 60%.

US fuel exports are increasing with higher fuel prices overseas. The exports of oil, diesel and jet fuel from US Gulf Coast ports increased by 32% in the first quarter of 2022 over previous year says this report in WSJ. The exports of natural gas by pipeline or tankers to Mexico and Canada increased to 22% of total US production in the same period. Companies and exporters are gettting higher prices overseas than they could get in the US. This is also pushing gas prices higher in the US to over $5 a gallon.

Demand for US exports has gone up exponentially say experts and a lot more US exports could take place to Europe and other countries. And domestic prices have had to rise to keep supplies in the US. With the increase in natural gas prices come increase in cost of electricity and households are expected to limit their use of energy as this happens.
