Cia Mexicana de Aviacion, Mexico's largest airline filed for bankruptcy protection in July 2010. The airline says losses amount to $350 million since 2007, and the debt is about $1 billion. Mexicana and Aeromexico were given government bailouts in the 1990's, later merged into one government run airline holding company called Cintra. In 2005 Mexicana was sold to hotel chain Grupo Posadas SAB for $165.5 million. The Mexican government is trying to introduce more competition in the airline industry and opposes another merger of the two airlines.

Safety violations at American Airlines. The FAA imposes fines for failure to follow proper drug testing procedures, failure to perform necessary maintenance. The FAA says even after being alerted American flew planes for 10 more flights with defective autopilots, in all 58 flights were made without proper maintenance.

A striking change is coming over US airlines as they turn their focus from operating costs to taking out unprofitable routes, reducing the size of their plane fleets, and increase the number of seats filled on a flight. The numbers bear this out. According to ATA the airlines reduced fleets from 3469 aircraft to 2747 aircraft from 2000 to 2005. American Airlines is typical in discontinuing 27 MD-80 aircraft which are older and gas guzzling. Delta and Northwest used the bankruptcy period to to get court approval to return many planes to leaseholders by breaking the leases- before breaking the lease parking the planes was more expensive than flying them at a loss. As a result according to ATA US airlines filled an average of 77.6% up from 75.4% in 2004. With this strategy airlines recovered some of their pricing power. US Dept of Transportation statistics show prices are higher than at any time since Sept 11, 2001 and the Air Travel Price Index, increased by 9.1% in 4th quarter 2005 over 4th quarter 2004. And airlines are being more restrained in getting into new routes just because some other airline has eliminated that route. Airlines however have to be careful to increase prices just enough but not too much that demand starts falling, and this is possible with fewer seats on more popular routes. Other methods the airlines are using are sophisticated O&D origin and destination revenue management systems which reduce the number of inexpensive, and unprofitable seats available on the internet. Larger airlines have tried to get back corporate customers by reducing the extremely high fares they used to charge and instead raising last minute fares because corporate customers see this as a price burden they are willing to shoulder. Larger airlines are doing better in relation to the price discounters like Southwest and JetBlue. With Southwest's hedging strategy against fuel price increases not as useful as in prior years it too faces need to raise fares....

A lot has been written about inflation in car pricing. This is true also of airlines and hotels this summer. Dawn Gilbertson in the WSJ says the 2023 travel rush continues, hotels and airlines have pricing power, and inflation is squeezing budgets. The solution is to have Plan B destinations, shorter trips, and plan airline reservations in advance looking at different alternatives based on airline and alternative destination choices. Average daily hotel rates have jumped to $180 this year in the US, up 10% since 2022 and 15% since 2019.

Southwest Airlines CEO Kelly says studies have shown passengers just want to know if their flight is going to go and at what time. So he stresses these things, because travel is not perfect and its how his airline handles these situations that matters. He says its not a reach to say that Southwest is getting the 5% of revenues that is the max he thinks you can get from baggage fees, by simply not charging as passengers hate these fees. He wants to use new technology to manage fares better. Asked about things getting bette, green shoots of recovery, he isnt optimistic. He says Southwest has to be prepared for a lot of uncertainty and instability, and operate with an abundance of caution. He goes on to say what he sees as different in this downturn. Saying he wishes that steroids were legal, because the speed at which we identify issues , study them and make decisions is unlike anything he has experienced before. In Southwest's culture this is the difference between furloughing employees, grounding planes, and reducing flights and running as close to normal as possible. The cushion is gone now, and he has to manage risk much more carefully. This is good advice for other executives....

Both airlines operate together but are run practically separately and the employees feel that way, considering themselves on the east side or the west side. Not much of a merger, and President Dave Parker has failed to win labor confidence, not having signed labor contracts with his employees and operating under transitional arrangements.

Judith Dobrzynski's interview with David Neelman, CEO of Jet Blue, at the airlines offices in Forest Hills, Queens. Neelman talks about the problems facing Jet Blue as it faces losses in 2006. This follows rapid expansion at the low cost carrier. He says Jet Blue did not monitor costs effectively. "Other problems include not pricing connections competitively with other airlines and poor revenue management. Analysts say low cost carriers will have a difficult time with high oil prices. Neelman maintains that it still works for oil at $60 a barrel. Jet Blue is turning its order of 100 Embraer jets, planes with 100 seats and 200 mile range to advantage, by gaining flexibility to serve short haul destinations from New York and Boston to Columbus, Tucson, Nashville, Houston and other places.

Effort by the EU to regulate greenhouse gases from emissions by airlines landing in Europe. European Justice ministers meeting in Luxembourg approved the measures which require airlines that land or take off from European airports to join the emissions trading system starting Jan1 2012. Eco-power washes for engines developed by Pratt and Whitney, a manufacturer of jet engines, is aservice that costs $3000 to $5000 per wash. It helps take the dirt and sludge off the engines that accumulates after ears of flying. The caked on grime from the inside of the engine can reduce fuel consumption by 1.2%, which adds up over time. Pratt estimates that if the entire industry used this service $1 billion in fuel costs could be saved and emissions of carbon dioxide reduced by 3.2 billion pounds. There is additional savings in maintenance as the engines run cooler when cleaned, and airlines can avoid costly overhauls for as long as 18 additional months. Wasdhing takes 90 minutes, is clean and pays for itself in weeks. Southwest started its program in April and by late May 2008 had done 248 washes. It estimates savings from these washes at $1.6 million.

India's second largest airline SpiceJet looks for new investors after posting 5 straight quarters of losses in the highly price sensitive Indian airline market. SpiceJet needs about 6 billion rupees to solve cashflow problems, according to CFO of the Sun Group, which owns SpiceJet. IndiGo is now the only airline making a profit in India. Jet Airways sold a stake to Etihad Airways, Air Sahara was absorbed into Jet Arways in 2006, Kingfisher is deeply in debt and grounded all planes. Analysts say the price of fuel is 60% higher in India than the average globally and customers price shop intensively, as a result airlines do not have enough cash flow for a week.

WSJ provides tips for getting the best airline ticket prices. 

Fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday.  The best time to buy is 3 weeks out, 3 months to 3 weeks is the best time after that you are at the mercy of the airlines, says WSJ. Fares can be 20% lower on the weekend or on if you buy on a Sunday. Nonstop flights can be cheaper than connecting flights nowadays. You find lower fares by staying on a Saturday, maybe 25% less costly to Europe, only 3% for inside the U.S.

One thing has changed- airlines cost for oil is only a quarter of operating cost. So if oil prices come down don't expect airline prices to come down. Consolidation, reduced flights and strong demand have led to a different climate for airlines.
