The need for earth friendly diets is shown in this editorial in The Guardian. Animal based products account for 57% of greenhouse gas emissions compared to 29% for food from plants. An outsize meat and dairy industry accounts for about 15% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions according to UN message in 2021. Mr. Dimpleby is Britain's food minister. He says a 30% reduction in meat eating would make it possible to have sustainable land use in Britain. The Guardian says high income countries are eating double the meat, poultry and fish products that they should be eating for living within the planetary sustainable living boundaries- that is to have no net environmental damage. Go back to the periods before 1600 and European, American, high income countries consumption of animal based foods was a fraction of what it is today.  A new legal regime is seen as a fair, just and sustainable living oriented solution. The Netherlands is doing just this to reduce the size of its large animal and dairy industry as a step towards more sustainable living and planet. It is not easy to convince farmers yet the public supports such a move. With the fires, floods and drought in Europe there is increasing awareness that action needs to be taken even where it is difficult.  ...

This report in the New Yorker provides a good glimpse at the problems of global warming and limiting climate change goal of 1.5 degrees centigrade. Sally Ann Ranney co-founder of the American Renewable Energy Institute answers questions from the New Yorker magazine. Limiting climate change warming of the planet to 1.5 degrees centigrade by 2100 is a goal enshrined in the Paris Agreement. In the absence of this the global warming would be 2.7 degrees centigrade by 2100. For this 1.5 degrees centigrade goal to be reached fossil fuel use and carbon emissions have to be cut by 50% by 2030 and 100% by 2050. 

The ice pack in the Arctic is part of a planetary cooling system and its accelerated melting is a good sign of the danger the planet faces. Ranney answers a number of these questions.

The Biden administration makes its decision- it will continue the tariffs president Trump placed on about half of Chinese imports into the US. It also seeks new talks with China on trade. US is also pursuing other policies on trade that were not pursued by the Trump administration. Longer term it is about alliance building in trade with the European Union, Britain, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and India. These alliances would jointly approach China on trade, economic and security matters.  Another approach is for the US to build at home. Congress is asked to approve $52 billion in subsidies that the Biden administration wants to give to companies so that they build the semiconductor plants of the future right here in the USA. The Biden administration is also aware that China is doubling down on technology purchases within China from Chinese firms to support its own high tech industries. In response it is laying down a policy of its own for the future step by step. The Chinese market now takes less priority than maintaining technological leadership of the US in all advanced technologies. The Biden administration is steering American industry and technology advancement in this direction. ...

Disagreements on how much to fund an education recovery effort in the Toy government of Mr. Johnson. Sir Kevan Collins resigns after his program designed to help students recover from the loss of study time from coronavirus at a cost of 15 billion pounds is rejected. The government plans to put 1.4 billion pounds, which Sir Collins calls too narrow, and not doing enough, delivering too slowly. Sir Collins had hoped to give 6th Formers and extra 100 hours of schooling and help prepare students for GCSE exams. He would have extended school time by 30 minutes in 2022 and setup a 35 hour week for students.

Ford gets $5.9 billion from the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program of the U.S. government. It will use hte money to rettol 11 factories in the midwest. It will help Ford make 13 of its models more fuel efficient. Ford plans to sell 4 models of electric vehicles by 2012. Lawmkers in Congress are pushing to increase the size of the program from $25 billion to $50 billion. The $5.9 billion will be loaned to Ford and given between now and 2011, with Ford beginning repayment in 2012. THe plants are in Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio, and employ about 35,000 engineering and factory level employees.

Germany's Economy Minister Robert Habeck says Germany has plans to almost completely end Russian energy imports by the end of the year. For this to happen Germany has to make extensive progress in cutting oil imports in a short time. By the end of summer the Russian energy imports will be cut by half. The effort is significant because before the invasion of Ukraine Germany received 50% of its coal, 55% of its gas, and 35% of its oil from Moscow. Coal deliveries will end by the end of autumn. 

Habeck confirmed that current contracts with Russian companies to import energy will not be renewed. He also confirmed that Russian gas deliveries will take longer to be stopped- not till mid-2024.

Airbus CEO Fabrice Bregier, says Airbus is set to double its profit margin by 2015 through improvements in efficiency and management. In 2012 EADS Airbus unit showed an operating profit margin of about 4% on sales of 39 billon euros, compared to Boeing commercial airplane division operating margin of 9.6% on sales of $49 billion. Under the 51 year old French engineer Airbus is redoing the way it makes planes, giving factory managers more freedom to make decisions, and bringing an "entrepreneurial spirit" to the company. Each plant is treated as a small business, and Bregier says the fact that the planes are complex does not mean that one needs to be complex in doing things. Airbus parent company EADS stock has risen by 50% in the past year with shares at 42.84 euros on June 14, 2013. The reduced stakes of the French government and Daimler AG in EADS has increased the amount of freely traded shares to 72% from 54%, increasing pressure from investors for better performance. Airbus has 150,000 employees and subcontractors and changing the culture in the organization is a difficult task. More efficient production of nickel in Indonesia by Chinese plants is causing problems for France in New Caledonia. New Caledonia is a Pacific island with large nickel deposits that are needed for French and European electric car production. Glencore is planning to sell one of its nickel processing plants in New Caledonia. This affects employment in the island which depends on nickel for 25% of jobs. France has encouraged immigration to the island and this has created tensions with the native Kayak people. The result was riots in the island and French efforts to find solutions to develop the island's nickel industry and improve lives of local people.

The mass transit system in Dar es Salaam, capital of Tanzania, cost $150 million and provides transport connections cutting commutes by 2 hours for 400,000 people. 
Dar es Salaam has population 6 million and has grown eightfold since 1980. Four of five people live on the sprawling fringes in informal settlements that take a commute of over 2 hours to city centre. Dar es Salaam has chosen a bus system with dedicated lanes and areas instead of a metro which is costlier to build. The city has only four arterial roads with 2 lanes each way. Most of the growth is on the periphery and unplanned. The Dart System now in place separates the bus lanes from other traffic to reduce stoppages. The average journey from the centre to the terminus at Kimara is now down from 2 hours each way to 45 minutes.saving 50 hours each week for the average bus passenger.

He will do it two step, first getting the Border right by committing additional resources including offsets of cost from clean energy tax credits. Only after enough technology and resources for Border Patrol are made to secure the Border will the second step of tax cut renewal be taken up.  The process Thune plans to use is budget reconciliation which requires only a simple majority in the US Senate. Things are tight in Congress, in the House very tight with 217-215 and in Senate 53-47. Budget reconciliation means cannot add to budget deficits beyond 10 year window and bill have to budgetary. ...

If China reduced its automobile tariffs to 2.5% from current 25% it would help German carmakers such as BMW that export from U.S. plants to China. BMW as a premium brand is better able to absorb the transport costs and does not manufacture cars in China. U.S. makers Ford and GM would benefit less as they already have plants making cars in China. By not making cars in China BMW does not have to transfer technology to a Chinese partner.

This report in WSJ looks at the Biden education, healthcare and climate change plan. It is part of the Families and Workers Plan put forward by president Biden for $3.6 trillion. This figure has now been lowered to $2 trillion and may drop crucial provisions for education such as the cost free community college which poses serious risks for working class families unable to afford community college, and skews education access even further to higher income families. It also lowers college attendance of American men, which is falling to alarming levels. The reason the plans are being whittled down is the 50-50 split between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and the failure of Republicans and two Democrat senators Manchin of West Virginia, Sinema of Arizona to support community college access. Parts of the current bill support child care, access to affordable housing and in home care for elderly Americans. New elections for Senate and House of Representatives in 2022 would have to settle the issues related to financing assistance for families and workers as the Senate today is divided 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans. A separate Bipartisan Infrastructure package has the support of all in the US Congress to build bridges and roads, other infrastructure badly neglected by different administrations over the last 2 decades. ...

Colonel Stevenson's efforts to limit features on a new bomber for the U.S. Air Force to replace aging B-52's and B-1's. Contractors added a kitchenette in one design which was turned down by Stevenson and senior officers at the Air Force. Senior officers were mindful of how it might be seen by the public and aware of the need to keep costs down during a period of austerity budgets. Barnes describes the efforts of Colonel Stevenson as he led efforts to limit the new plane to essential features, turning down contractor proposals for a plane that could be converted into a drone, reconaissance and cyberdefense features, and other embellishments that would drive up the price tag per plane. In 2011 budget negotiations defense officials agreed to limit the cost to $550 million per bomber, a third of the cost of the B-2 which cost $1.8 billion per plane. Because new planes take a decade or more to design and build with cost overruns, it is also important not to venture too far into technological unknowns. This adds more time to build and proves costly. The Long-Range Bomber project started in 2011 with Secretary Gates signing off on the requirements for it to give the president the option to move quickly in a matter of hours to penetrate distant airspace. The cost is $600 million spent till Oct 2013 for research, and $8.7 billion budgeted to 2018. The Air Force is sticking to existing engine design, and Stevenson says if the technology has not been tested the Air Force is not interested in experimenting with it. In the process Stevenson finds himself trying to change the culture at the Air Force, where putting cost as the top priority is a new concept....

Overall the European parliament elections shows the EPP with CDU in Germany winning over 30 percent of the vote, the SPD 14 percent and the Afd 15 percent, Greens 12 percent. In terms of next EU government the EPP, Socialists and Renew have 59.1% of the vote, and with the Greens included 62.6% of the vote of 360 million EU voters. The European parliament elections show the Renaissance Party that includes Macron En Marche and FDP in Germany losing 23 seats, with some seats going to Conservatives and the ID. Conservatives and Reformists right alliance led by Meloni of Italy including National Rally in France added 4 seats, ID of Denmark adding 9 seats. The Socialists including SPD lost 4 seats and the European People's Party including CDU/CSU led by Leyen won the most seats adding 10 seats. Greens/EFA lost 18 seats as the other parties adopted green energy planks. Leyen says the centrist parties held off challenges from the right and left parties. A WSJ study showing the plans offered under the new U.S. Health Care Law in the state of Oregon. For young people ages 18-34 earning about $17,000 and uninsured the law offers a bargain with insurance premiums monthly at about $52 and deductibles as low as $100, because of higher subsidies. The situation changes at incomes of $29,000 when the deductibles are about $6300 and the premiums per month at about $147 a month, because subsidies are much smaller, or deductibles dropping to $2500 at $172 in monthly premium. The federal subsidies disappear for single people under age 30 earning much more than $26,000 because of the way the law places them to specific plans on each state's exchange. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are 11.6 million people in the U.S. ages 18-34 who are uninsured. The federal government has to get as many of these people to get insurance so that the cost of medical care for the elderly can be supported.

The rule requiring health pass showing one is fully vaccinated goes into effect in France starting July 28 at restaurants, coffee shops, trains, and other public places. For the first week restaurants will not be fined. After this they can be fined 1500 euros for a single violation. The passe sanitaire in France is now required  for all public places where more than 50 people gather, such as events and museums including the Louvre in Paris. It will be extended to restaurants, cafes and shopping centres in August.

French premier Castex says 97% of the 18000  daily average new cases in France, up by 150% since the prior week, are from the unvaccinated. This has made health authorites and the government concerned about the delta variant high transmission rates and the high proportion of people still not vaccinated. For France this poses risk of a new kind of fourth wave, causing the government to take strong action to accelerate vaccinations.

Bernie Sanders with 46% of the delegates, 13.4 million votes, 22 states, and many of the young people in the U.S. behind him, told a news reporter at his home in the final sprint two weeks before the election- he plans to see the major planks of the Democratic platform implemented. He said Clinton is progressive on a number of issues, but the platform is more progressive with upward mobility a critical concern. Sanders played a critical role in shaping the platform. He says he opposes someone from Wall Street in positions of Treasury Secretary, Trade Representative, and will make known his views who would be best in these positions, including Attorney General. Sanders is supported in the Senate by Senators Sherrod Brown, Jeff Merkley, and Elizabeth Warren. Warren has campaigned with Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire, and both support minimum wage, women's rights. WIth a win for Democrats in the Senate Sanders will become either the chairman of the Budget Committee, or with his preference chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. His main goal now is to see key economic Cabinet positions that affect upward mobility, intergenerational mobility, which is damaged today for the middle and working class, go to persons who would do the most to improve it.  ...

Expensive new fuel saving technology investments at BMW to meet new pollution control standards in Europe (130 grams per kilometer) and boost fuel efficiency in the US. This year only 40% of its cars will meet 140 grams per kilometer. With a production total of 1.4 million cars BMW faces sizable investments with smaller car volume than the likes of Toyota and Honda. R&D costs have climbed 22% in first half 2007 to 1.5 billion euros. BMW has agreements to jointly develop some of the new technology with Daimler and GM on hybrid gasoline-electric drive cars. Its developing a new 3 liter diesel engine for the US market that cleaner and fuel efficient. US under the Trade Agreement with EU US plans to send $750 billion in LNG exports to the EU. Qatar has said it may discontinue exports of LNG to EU in response and shift to Asian buyers. Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai is moving quickly to address higher costs for workers at its manufacturing sites in coastal regions of China. After extensive media coverage of conditions at Foxconn factories, a number of suicides, and Chinese government policy that encouraged higher wages for workers in foriegn owned plants, Foxconn has moved to sharply increase wages at its plants. By the end of 2011 production in cities in the interior of China- Chengdu, Chongqing, and Wuhan, where costs are one third less- will be 25% of production, up from 10% in 2010. By 2012, this will be up to 50% of Foxconn's production, according to Yuanta Securities of Taipei. Hon Hai is lowering dividends to finance the shift. Fourth quarter 2010 earnings of Hon Hai were $742 million, down 26% over the prior year, even though revenues went up by 56% to $33.1 billon- reflecting the higher costs. Hon Hai's stock is down 20% in the past year on the Taipei stock exchange. Other locations being considered by Hon Hai are Brazil, Turkey and Slovakia. Brazil's President Dilma Roussef, said that Foxconn is considering a $12 billion plan for Brazil. Hon Hai is the only manufacturer of Apple iPads and one of two manufacturers of the iPhone....

India's airline market has grown from 51 million passengers in 2010 to 138 million in 2018. 600 planes are in operation with 859 on order. The airline industry in India is experiencing intense competition and putting some airlines such as Jet Airways in trouble as they compete with low cost carriers such as Indigo.

Jet Airways has temporarily stopped operating its 115 planes on about 1000 routes as it has failed to win new funding. This could lead to higher prices. Fuel prices and depreciation of the rupee hurt Jet Airways.  A problem for Indian airlines is the thin margins and the uncertain oil price environment. Etihad Airways took a 24% stake in Jet Airways but that partnership has not prevented Jet from having problems with lenders.
