As the U.S. economy continues to recover Europe is seeing the impact of the second wave of the pandemic on the economy. Economists say the U.S. economy grew at an annualized rate of 28% in the third quarter of 2020 after a drop of 31% in the second quarter. Hillary Clinton attacks Trump's policies in an address in Warren, Michigan, saying this was another version of failed trickle down economics. She called Trump's idea of taxing pass through entities such as small business reporting business income on individual tax returns at 15%, as a "Trump loophole." On trade policy Hillary Clinton said she would oppose the TPP or Trans- Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement that president Obama has supported. She put it flatly- " I oppose it now. I'll oppose it after the election, and I'll oppose it as president." And pointed out that too many companies have moved jobs overseas and "moved operations overseas and sold back into the U.S." after pushing for trade deals. The answer she said 'is not to rant and rave- or to cut us off from the world," in reference to protectionist policies Trump has supported.

About 60% of Swiss voters in this Sunday's referendum on keeping Covid passes and restrictions in place favor keeping them. The referendum vote is likely to provide $6 billion for increasing nurses pay and benefits, which is a good thing as nurses are exhausted after 2 years of non stop work.  Vaccination rate is 65% of people vaccinated in Switzerland. In the US state of Michigan the vaccination rate is 58%, resulting in a surge in cases. Vaccination rates had stalled in Germany and Switzerland resulting in a surge in cases. New variant from South Africa adds to the problem of the unvaccinated in Europe and the US.

The border crossing at Kirkenes, Norway, remains one of the few border points in the EU with Russia that are open, where visitors go back and forth between Russia and Norway. This part of Norway near the Arctic Circle was taken back by the Soviets in the war, after Nazi Germany occupied Norway. Russia let Norway run this region from that time leading to friendly relations. Norway is the only neighboring country that was never at war with Russia. Because of its location far up in the Arctic Circle it remains a unique location with Russian ships coming here. 
And 62 miles from the Norwegian coast is Russia's ballistic missile submarine fleet. Norway as part of NATO provides support to Ukraine with $7.2 billion in aid. It also is a major supplier to EU for oil and gas helping the EU after the cutoff of Russian oil and gas supplies.

China adopts a two child policy nationwide in October 2015, abandoning a one child policy adopted in 1980. Experts had warned for years of a policy that would lead to fewer young people, and a rapidly aging society. UN forecasts show China will have about 400 million people over the age of 60 in 2030, 25% of the population in 2030, compared to 14% today if current trends continued. Growth of elderly people would burden the pension and health care systems. The birth rate of 1.4 children per woman is lower than in the U.S. today.

China's leaders meeting at the Third Plemum in November 2013 announced changes to the one-child policy. If either member of a couple is an only child the couple will be allowed to have 2 children. The result will be that most Chinese couples will be able to have 2 children. Demographic experts say this is unlikely to lead to a large increase in China's 1.3 billion population as a majority of only child parents live in cities where the cost of raising children is very high, and many parents will avoid the cost of a second child. In the past couples with both partners as only children, which is common in China's urban areas, have been permitted to have a second child but have not chosen this option because of the costs of housing and education. Rural families were allowed to have 2 children if the first child was a girl in the past. With the decline of the number of people of working age, and an increase in older retired people, this is also a way to address the problem of shortages in young people to work in manufacturing and assembly lines. This is needed to support an increasing elderly population....

Putting 300,000 children in poverty, affecting 1.6 million families, that is the cost of the two child benefits cap of Tory finance minister under Cameron, Osborne. The cost 1.7 billion pounds when 18 billion pounds of debt was added to the debt of company running the British water utility Thames Water, with a chunk of it to to pay dividends, that was privatized in 1989, as shown in the Guardian. Leading to its inability to make the investment needed and to the water quality issues in the Thames river. Thames Water is near financial collapse with parent company defaulting on its debt in April, according to the Guardian. The misallocation of funds under the Tories is a warning about what happens under Reagan/Friedman economic theory that has become part of the existing culture and damaged the economy in the US and Europe. These are what the King's Speech called "the scars of 14 years where politics (and economic theory) was put above the national interest, and decline deep in the marrow of our institutions." The German company Bayer faces an unusual situation trying to settle all lawsuits for Roundup weed killer that claim it causes cancer. It is settling lawsuits even while the product remains on the shelves at retailers. Bayer is not allowed to put warning labels by the EPA and regulators on Roundup that is on the shelves, because the EPA says glyphosate is not a chemical that causes cancer.  Bayer has already lost in three jury trials and faces the unusual predicament of not being able to remove the ingredient or put a warning label to avert future litigation. Bayer had lost a third of its stock value as the legal situation worsened. Investors are very critical of the acquisition of Monsanto for $63 billion by CEO Mr. Baumann in June 2018. Monsanto sold Roundup and this is how it ended up in Bayer's products with sales of $200 million. The legal settlements plan is 50 times this. $8 billion for current lawsuits and $2 billion for future lawsuits. And future lawsuits are unpredictable creating uncertainty for Bayer. Investors question whether such an acquisition was a good idea in the first place. ...

The deep deterioration in U.S. China relations as the U.S. sees itself in a disadvantage in trade with China and the Trump administration imposes tariffs, calls for changing existing supply chains and trade to safeguard U.S. interests. The lack of transparency from China about the coronavirus and the underreporting that led to the U.S. and Europe not taking the threat seriously enough or taking defensive steps is also seen as a part of the deeper problem as the U.S. and Europe bear the brunt of the coronavirus in terms of deaths and cases.  This presents a deeper problem than the trade issue by itself as the U.S. had a trade issue with Japan which was later resolved. The way the Trump administration sees itself as the only protector of U.S. interests in trade, security and international cooperation creates a new level of tensions. Other countries such as Australia, India, Japan, and countries in South East Asia are seen as having similar concerns as supply chains are being remade to reflect the new trading conditions and economic structures. ...

The U.S. economy showed a rebound with the purchasing manager's index for August at 54.7 compared to 50.3 in July. Manufacturing output up to 53.6. Over 50 indicates expansion. Job gains slowed in July. Overall the U.S. economy is recovering but industrial production is still 8.2% less than a year ago level according to the Federal Reserve. Easing of lockdowns overseas help exports. For the eurozone the PMI index is at 51.6 in August from 54.9 in July, as the second wave of pandemic hits service sector there.

The WSJ offers this profile of a son of German immigrants who accumulated timber lands in Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Pacific Northwest of the US. George Weyerhaeuser's company made the diapers for store brands across America. He says he was shocked at seeing the land when the timber was taken and the area cleared and started the practice of reforestation now a major goal set by COP26 in Glasgow.

US president Biden visits the southern border with Mexico where there is a surge of migrants mostly from Nicaragua. He meets Texas Governor Abbott and visits the El Paso border area and El Paso county Migrant Support Center. He will then meet Lopez Obrador of Mexico and Justin Trudeau of Canada in a summit meeting in Mexico. This report in the WSJ says Mr. Biden is pursuing policy that will send back migrants including Title 42 used by the Trump administration. Republicans have made the border a top priority. Trump era policy requires Mexico to take back 30,000 migrants a month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Biden plans to continue these policies for illegal entry to stem the surge.
