The European Union’s total defense spending increased by 30% from 2021 to 2024, to 326 billion euro or $341 billion. That is 1.9% of the EU’s GDP it's economic output, according to European Defense Agency. It is still short of 2%.  Britain will ramp up defense spending all the way up to 3% in 2027. Britain is short of defense equipment with transfers to Ukraine and with much of the defense budget going to maintain a nuclear deterrent. This leaves less for other defense needs. This report says most of the procurement for defense equipment goes to countries outside Europe.The Kiel Institute says 80% comes from outside EU. It is not mere shortage of funds it is the severe bottleneck from lack of defense manufacturing industry  that is putting Germany, France and UK in a situation where they are too dependent on the US. It takes years to build this capacity. Russia built it up during 3 years of war by going to a wartime economy and it now produces 4 times the ammunition Europe produces. The US did the same to match and exceed Russian capabilities and capacity, Europe lagged behind with unwillingness of Macron and of Scholz in particular to switch funds from needs in transport, infrastructure to defense. The debt brake Merkel to stop debt based infrastructure investment is what ails Germany. It has had two pernicious effects it created the AfD's surge by lowering economic growth and investment in public needs - housing, transport, public services. It worsened the SPD and CDU performance by not investing in security with no policies to return crime committing refugees to their home countries. A combination of aid and other assistance, diplomacy, secured the cooperation of countries to take them back. A strong display of action on removing refugees committing any offenses would have lessened the number of terrorism incidents. ...

France and the UK are pooling resources to enhance defense capabilities at a lower cost. Joint development of submarine capabilities and satellite communications, and in other areas. A 50 year defense and cooperation treaty was signed by the prime ministers of the two countries in November 2010. A separate treaty on nuclear cooperation was also signed. The treaty has the support of the US. The interests of the two countries are similiar as budget deficits have restricted the ability of each country.

China's defense minister Li Shangfu visits New Delhi as India assumes the chair role for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. India says normal ties with China can only take place when the border disputes are resolved. India's modernization program to 2030 is based on growing its economy and investing heavily in infrastructure and advanced technologies to transform the country. For this to happen India needs to increase exports to over $2 trillion, and reduce imports from China to increase domestic manufacturing.

Akis Tsochatzopoulos, 74, a former defense minister from the socialist Pasok Party, is given a 20 year sentence for taking 55 million euros in bribes from a number of arms deals. He was defense minister from 1996 to 2001, and the charges relate arms purchases in that period of Russian TOR-M1 short range missiles and German submarines. He is already serving a eight year sentence for other offenses. Submarine deals with Germany at what were thought to be inflated prices were a topic of discussion as the Greek crisis and unemployment worsened in 2010-2012.

Alan Blinder, former Fed senior official, makes a spirited defense of the Federal Reserve's $600 billion quantitative easing move in November 2010. He says at the most this would lead to 1% to 3% inflation, and not the inflation critics are pointing to that would hurt the US. He is critical of the mercantilist countries, Germany and its Finance Minister Schauble, for calling this currency manipulation. He finds it incomprehensible that aides to Russsian Prime Minister Putin have asked the Fed to consult with Russia before taking such action. His preferred move would have been to purchase private securities and reduce the rate the Fed pays on reserves to negative. This he says would blast reserves out of banks into more productive uses. Yet he sees the Fed's move as better than doing nothing. He says that if buying Treasury's is a weak tool, a view he shares, then this should not be very inflationary. Taiwanese disinformation prevention efforts include tracking down fake information sources, connecting with the government agencies, Google and Social media companies, and action making internet companies responsible for the information on their sites. Google has trained 110 people in Taiwan as part of this effort. Taiwan also places importance on the public getting trained to spot what is unlikely to be true and inconsistent.
