He sees Zelensky as an obstacle to peace early in the second term, that has changed now that Russia and Putin continue the war. By July 8 after calls to Putin and Zelensky, he now sees Russia as an obstacle to a negotiated settlement and the need for defensive shipments to Ukraine.

As this happens in the US Congress Lindsey Graham, senior Senator from South Carolina leads an effort supported by 80 senators to place sanctions on countries that support Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Most people know the answer in the winter of 2025 is that Russia is in a much much stronger position in 2025 and a big part of this is it's size 40 million people in Ukraine to 120 million in Russia and oil revenues. Then Burns asks if it is Zelensky who is responsible for the stalled progress what's going on here, all the time giving DJT something that he might take up that would make a headline grabbing interview. She prompts DJT with the starter phrases and pausing for DJT to pick up on it- If Zelensky rejects this deal, do you think Ukraine has lost this war, and the consensus in Europe is to keep supporting Ukraine until they can win this war. And DJT does no more than what he has said many many times about the difficult situation Ukraine is in. Asked if the US may walk away from supporting Ukraine as Trump Jr. has said, and DJT says- "No it isn't correct. But it's not exactly wrong" because they have to play ball. And that is exactly what the European states UK, France, Germany, Italy, have done as they keep talking and modify the original plan devised by Russia and the US. What this says is that the European states are not trying to win this war and at the same time not willing to let this war be lost and the principle of invading another country be seen as acceptable. This is where there are limits to DJT's diplomacy as he attributes the problem to the hatred between the leaders of the two countries. DJT does not say Zelensky would lose the election if one were held in 2026 as he calls for elections.   ...

DJT and Putin talk for 1 hour on February 12, 2025, on the phone and agree to hold talks to end the Ukraine War. He also talks to Zelensky of Ukraine following the talk with Putin. In this video DJT says he feels that Putin wants to end the war, Zelensky wants to end the war, and he wants to end the war. The talks will be continued on the phone, at a meeting in Saudi Arabia, and by visits of the two leaders to the US and to Russia. DJT says he agrees with Defense Secretary Hegseth that the war settlement will not include Ukraine joining as a member of NATO. The Munich Security Conference is Feb 14-16, 2025.

One key point came in early Harris said she had a Plan for the economy, for an Opportunity Economy, Trump she said had none. Trump did not offer a plan. Harris spelled out a plan to tackle housing costs including a $6000 child tax credit and building 3 million new homes. Harris called higher tariffs, double than exist today, a way to increase costs for each family by $4000. She also pointed out that economists had confirmed that Trump tariff policies would lead to higher costs for Americans as they would be passed on by importers. Harris also offered a position of all of the above that included fracking where appropriate to increase oil supplies to bring down prices for American families, a key issue in Pennsylvania. On immigration and crime it was David Muir who reminded Trump that the FBI had stated crime was down in the country. On Ukraine, Afghanistan Harris clearly explained that US was not at war for the first time in one hundred years and was saving the US $300 million a day it cost for the war in Afghanistan. On Ukraine she said Biden-Harris had strengthened NATO and ties with allies, in an answer to David Muir's repeated question to Trump "Is it in the US interest for Russia to win the war in Ukraine?" To which Trump offered only a reply that suggested this was not important for him, disavowing US policy from 1900 to preserve the rule of law in international relations that no country should violate sovereignty of other nations through invasion. Among Republicans this is an issue with Mitch McConnell and others supporting Biden-Harris. ...

The views range from Rand Paul, Donald Trump to Republican leadership in the Senate under Mitch McConnell. Mr. Trump is also seen as representing an older view of relations with Russia that may no longer exist after the full scale invasion of Ukraine. In this sense Russian tanks invading Ukraine is a watershed event like that of Prague in 1968 and Hungary in 1956. Old views no longer hold. The Cold War began with the Berlin Blockade in 1948- the response of president Harry Truman was the Berlin Airlift supplying the city of Berlin, and some such response is taking shape with the $350 million immediate aid to Ukraine that Biden promised on Feb. 26, within 48 hours of the invasion. The Hungarian revolution in 1956 set the stage for the Cold War after Soviet tanks entered Budapest. European perceptions of recent happenings in the Ukraine war and the war's progression from the beginnings over three years will matter in 2025 as Europe, as Germany, France and Britain take on the role of bringing a fair peace to Europe that closes the war and does the reconstituting of defense architecture of Europe under new institutions that needed to be taken up in the 1990's after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Republicans and DJT's perception of Europe as 27 states is likely to be false. Germany and France in the 21st century may just be stepping into a role that was prepared since the formation of the European community in the 1950's with Germany and France at the core of Europe. It may surprise many that Europe just steps into this role. And with it a reconstituting of the defense architecture of Europe that needed to be done after the fall of the Berlin Wall and not left to the vagaries of free market capitalism that have created the present situation. “It was not a spontaneous reaction to interventions by Zelenskyy, but obviously a manufactured escalation,” Merz of Germany has said recently of recent White House happenings.  “My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA,” Germany's Merz says and means it even if it confounds the US, China and other nations. ...

A vote to call witnesses, including former National Security Advisor Mr. Bolton, by Democrats fails in the Senate 51 votes against to 49 votes in favor, with only 2 Republican Senators voting in favor. The impeachment trial of president Trump now goes forward to a vote almost certain to acquit Mr. Trump of all charges of abuse of power and obstruction of justice. A key vote was cast in favor by Republican Senator Lamar Alexander who said Mr. Trump had acted inappropriately on Ukraine but this clearly was not treason, and not a high crime and misdemeanors, the bar set in the Constitution for impeachment.

The impeachment inquiry in the U.S. House of Representatives set off by a release of president Trump's conversation with the new Ukrainian president, involves vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. Mr. Trump had called for the Ukrainian government to look into corruption. The Washington Post gives this story of how Hunter Biden joined the board of an obscure Ukrainian gas company set up by a former minister and that this was brought to the attention of Joe Biden by advisers. At the time Joe Biden was representing the U.S. in Ukraine during a period in Ukraine when there was little clarity or transparency on what was happening in the country with changing governments. This story describes the thinking of people in the Biden circle who thought this was a bad idea.  This includes Hunter Biden's partner in the investment firm, a stepson of John Kerry, Secretary of State in the Obama administration, and other advisers of the Bidens. It has raised questions about why steps were not taken to prevent the perceived conflict of interest.  As a result of this Ukraine, a country at war with Russia and having elected a new president outside the conventional politics, is now at the centre of the impeachment inquiry. It is also likely to reshape the 2020 presidential election with differing views on this inquiry from president Trump who sees it to be about corruption in Ukraine, and Democrats about the president's effort to pressure Ukraine for his political campaign as U.S. provided critical aid to Ukraine.    ...
