Interest rates of 30% are a way to reduce social mobility in the way a feudal order once did in the years before the Modern World and the Scientific Revolution. A society without social mobility is one in decline can be seen in the way Spain went into decline after 1700 and Britain emerged to lead the Modern World and the Industrial Revolution. This is the crisis America faces today- change or cede leadership to China or some other nation. It is about this not the capitalist system or other system as many like to portray it, and Adam Smith was all about growth and social mobility that were part of his system which today is sadly forgotten, yet needs to be bravely put forward. ...

Greens and SPD Social Democrat parties in Germany favor social spending, infrastructure spending, and climate change investments. Free Democrats party holding the Finance ministry supports  a brake on spending. There is no agreement on the budget in this coalition, says DW.com. SPD and FDP are not increasing in popularity and SPD could lose the chancellorship if there is a new election. The Greens and the CDU are increasing in popularity. For this reason the coalition is likely to continue even with this disagreement on spending.  SPD and Greens say higher taxes and elimination of some subsidies is one solution. The common platform has not resolved these differences. In the US president Biden has retained the support of voters in the midterm elections and has gained bipartisan support for building infrastructure and investing in renewable energy, cutting health care costs.

Washington Post's new idea of developing content for social media platforms  (Third Newsroom) to cut losses of $77 million in 2023 by earning profit on social brand exercises, comes at a time when the risks of social media platforms to education of children and to their mental health are great. Social media platforms entry into the news business has led to old news companies first interacting with them over a decade and realizing that this was leading to gains for social media platforms and losses for the old news companies. For older news companies such as the NYT, WSJ, Washington Post and others in the US this was a period in which these companies lost control over their news content along with loss of revenues. Over the last five years the companies have become profitable managing their own content and increasing subscriptions. The Washington Post has run into problems and has a $77 million loss. It was sold to Amazon's Bezos for $250 million by the founding family in 2013.  It is now trying to revive its business by doing what failed for the NYT, WSJ and others- by embracing rather than rejecting social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and others using the News Movement idea of UK journalist Lewis and Winnett. That News Movement makes content for Instagram and TikTok but has not generated profits. Under Lewis as head of Washington Post news division, Matt Murray formerly editor of WSJ would as head of Third Newsroom develop this kind of content for social media platforms. This runs the risks of aiding the work of social media platforms at a time when TikTok has raised national security concerns in the US, and along with Instagram is being cited as part of social media platforms that are affecting the mental health of children. Its disastrous impact on the health of the Nation and its future comes from reducing focus on education and studies by diverting an average of 4.8 hours each day away from educational activity for the children that make up the future generation of this Nation. ...

U.S. healthcare spending of about $3 trillion comes with poor results. The cost per person is about three times that of countries such as France, Britain, yet the results show U.S. doing extremely poorly. The author points out that less spending on healthcare and more on social services in areas such as education, nutrition, housing and other services would improve the outcomes and results. It is this missing factor that is helping other countries in Europe, Japan and China achieve better outcomes and returns per dollar spent.  Social spending can affect such things as nutrition, exercize levels, lifestyles, housing and result in dramatic improvements in obesity levels for instance, or inflammation levels in the population that play a role in many diseases. The idea is prevention. This is not happening because higher health dollar spending has lobbies to support it. Social spending also is a dollar expense that shows up immediately whereas results are spread out into the future as a longer term benefit with healthier populations that need to consume less healthcare and treatment. Elizabeth Bradley, president of Vassar College is an expert on this subject. She says social services spending gives more bang for buck  in health outcomes.  The point is relevant also for countries in South Asia and Africa that have taken some on some aspects of the U.S. health system resulting in health care spending that does not deliver the most for the dollar spent, and ignores the critical role of prevention.  The solution lies in moving these health care dollars out of the health care spending and into education for health outcomes, lifestyles, exercize habits education, and into social services that enable prevention and better health. ...

Trump Media and Technology Group, the parent of Mr. Trump's Truth Social social media company will merge with Digital World Acquisition SPAC and the new company will replace the old with the sticker changing DWAC to DJT. This could happen next week if the majority of DWAC shareholders approve it. Krauthammer tells U.S. presidential candidates stop saying that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, because by its very definition it is a Ponzi scheme. Instead exercize common sense and take the simple steps to update Social Security for today's longer life expectancy, aging population and way fewer workers to support a retired person. In a Ponzi scheme payments by people joining currently are paid to those who joined earlier, with not enough to pay future entrants- which is what is happening to Social Security. In 1940, after Roosevelt signed Social Security into law, there were 160 workers for each retired person. That dropped to 16.5 in 1950, today there are 3 workers. In 1940 the life expectancy was 62, today it is closer to 80. Krauthammer says the writing is on the wall- simply have the courage to make the changes by raising the retirement age, means testing the rich for benefits, and adjust the cost of living measure.

Seniors helping seniors is the subject of this report by Clare Ansberry in the WSJ. This is a growing trend. Worker shortages increased in the home care industry during the pandemic. Now older workers such as Diane Richards, 81 years, a registered nurse, are filling some of these positions. Ms. Richards worked as a nurse for 59 years and after her husband's death decided to join Right at Home in Bend, Oregon. Some are retirees like Linda McCallum, 79 years, who are taking positions to supplement Social Security income at $20 per hour. Right at Home depends on her, as it lost half its workers during the pandemic. Over 20 years the broader workforce grew by 13%, yet the workers over 65 years working or seeking work increased by as much as 144% or 6.4 million in the US, according to the Labor Department. It will take some time for AI software firms (Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google)  to generate returns. Yet AI enabling goods, the AI chipmakers (the hardware) made by Taiwan, South Korea and the US's Nvidia are making large profits from the boom in AI investments worldwide. South Korea's Samsung SK Hynix, Taiwan's TSMC and Nvidia in the US are chip makers making huge sales revenue in AI enabling goods- $2.6 trillion for Asian makers including Japan, $1.4 trillion for all US chip makers. This report in the WSJ says whether and when the AI software makers (Google, Microsoft and Amazon)  turn a profit the AI boom is changing the habits of ordinary investors, surging the market capitalization of TSMC, Samsung, SK Hynix and Nvidia, and creating a big surge in stock markets in Asia and a bit smaller by comparison in the US. Total spending in 2026 for worldwide AI services, infrastructure and software was $2.6 trillion in 2026, going up to $3.5 trillion in 2027. The most astonishing aspect of this is how much the AI boom has increased the Asian stock market indexes- TAIEX index of Taiwan which has gone up 55% year to date Jan-June 2026 in value and South Korea's Kospi index which has increased 110% in value. Taiwan's TSMC shares doubled in value. Japan's stock market index Nikkei up year to date Jan-June 2026 32%.  Another aspect of this is that just one company TSMC makes up 42% - market capitalization as a percentage of the overall stock index- of TAIEX Taiwan's stock market index. And just 2 companies Samsung and SK Hynix make up 55% of South Korea's KOSPI Index. By comparison the US S&P up 11% in the same period year to date Jan-June 2026. This report looks at the speculative fever as ordinary investors in the middle and lower income classes in Asia in Taiwan and South Korea from cab drivers, insurance agents, software programmers and elementary school teaches, to high school students with parental sponsored accounts, are all engaged in speculative trading in AI related stocks. What all this means in terms of the cost of living issues, the price of oil and gas with Hormuz and the Memorandum with Iran to open it, the social fabric splintering, the cultural issues splitting electorates in the US and Europe, the migration issues, the issues on world trade is a separate question. It is similar to the railroads and steamship building in the 19th century and the construction of the interstate highway system in the 20th century (in the 1950's in US and in 2000's in China, 2020 in India) different aspects of the Industrial Revolution that overlap with the social and political changes of each period in history. Speculative booms in financial markets accompanied these changes till they returned to a degree of normalcy. It still required regulation, oversight, building the modern institutions of government that improved the economic life of nations and people during the FDR/Truman/Ike  period, and the period after the sixties that shaped the European Union and economic progress in Europe, similar changes in China and India, Brazil. And the many changes now needed in 2026 in the US, and Europe for reindustrialization, and modernization in India, continued development in China. ...

The Guardian sends its reporters along with UN special envoy on poverty Australian Prof. Alston as he spends two weeks in the world's richest country looking at poverty in urban areas.  They look at some of the 55,000 homeless people in Los Angeles, homelessness exacerbated by the tech boom in California that has sent housing costs skyrocketing. LA saw homeless people increase by 25% in 2017. The safety net is not being reinforced as the Trump administration cuts many social safety net programs. Next they visit the Tenderloin district in San Francisco where homeless people can be found at St Boniface Church sleeping in the pews. As the Guardian points out the cuts to social programs disproportionately hurt people of color who make up 39% of the homeless in the U.S. This report looks at the incongruity between the tax cuts that are likely to hurt poor whites who supported the Trump administration, as well as hurt the social protections that are part of today's democracies across the western world. This is most evident when one looks at the European Union. They were put in there in Europe for a reason- fairness is good for all classes, and most of all it protects democracies. Authoritarian regimes arise out of social dislocation from wars, or from lack of social protections and ineptitude of elites. Which is why a Lincoln or a Theodore Roosevelt from the Republican party supported fairness and social protections as much as FDR and Truman from the Democratic Party. The view expressed in this report in the Guardian is that the U.S. may have moved in the wrong direction under the Reagan and Clinton administrations creating the "me first" culture that prevails in the U.S. today. ...

Flannery O'Connor says it well when he says he doesn't know what he ithinks until he reads what he writes. And Philippe Bernard in Le Monde points out that writing is a critical skill for reading comprehension, as we read what we write, and ask ourselves is it written to get our ideas across, how coherent is it, and can we present a complex idea in words as we write and rewrite what we have written? Chats, social media, messages are shrinking the amount we write so that it is becoming a forgotten skill. Which is why Sweden has chosen to go from screens to binders that contain pens and paper to write with and learn to organize one's thoughts for children in its schools. It is a project that fits in with Lyrarc's Movement for Global Literacy. And we need for more countries to join this effort that Lyrarc is promoting in the interests of the children of the world and of adults.

Alice Rivlin's efforts to break the deadlock in the bipartisan Obama administration commission. The commission was setup to recommend ways to control the US budget deficit. This group is paralyzed by politics as Democrats have tried to safeguard Social Security, and the Republicans are dead set against tax increases. Rivlin is working through a shadow commission on the deficit headed by former Senator Pete Domenici. This shadow commission is supported by the Bipartisan Policy Center, a think tank setup by former Republican and Democratic majority leaders. The idea is to get the process started through leaders of both parties, as happened in 1983, when Senators Monynihan and Dole initiated the process after a similiar deadlock. The agreement reached then led to a change in the Social Security law, which increased the cap on payroll taxes and raised the retirement age.
