In Denmark without these changes the labour working class party would have lost power to a movement like that of Nigel Farage Reform UK which wants to shut the door completely on migrants. Public patience appears to be gone. Similar situations have happened in Dutch politics and is happening in other countries including Germany and France. ...

The US needs 100,000 jobs a month just to keep up with population growth. And 7.2 million jobs have been lost since December 2007. Where will the new jobs come from to replace lost jobs in retail, banking auto and other job losing sectors and when, and will some jobs never come back. Global Insight forecast show 8.1% unemployment in 2013, suggesting that jobs needed for population growth and some jobs from the pool of job losses will not be recovered for some years.

At one time it was valued at $100 billion in 2017 and its stock hit new lows by 2024 hit by depressed margins for pharmacy drugs it reported lower earnings in 2024. In Jan 2025 the Department of Justice sued Walgreens for contributing to the opioid crisis in its dispensing of pills leading to its stock price dropping to $10 and its market value to $8.9 billion. Earlier Sycamore had taken Staples office supplies store chain private in 2017 for $6.7 billion.

Omar Ashmawy was an Air Force officer and a war crimes prosecutor at Guantanamo Bay. He moans the fact that 10 years after 9/11 there is the same lack of knowledge and understanding of the Arab world, its language, culture and history. This showed in the surprise with which the movement for democracy and self-expression in Arab countries was received in the U.S. He points to the lack of language and cultural training in the military 10 years after America fought 2 wars in the Arab world and now finds itself thrust into the events of the Arab Spring. He says this is a weakness that really hurts America in coming up with productive interaction and partnership with people in the Arab and Muslim world. That productive interaction requires an insightful understanding of their needs and aspirations, and their own unique problems and history.
