Konrad Putzier of the WSJ looks at the problems of renovating old spaces in cities across the US. The cost is a factor as it cost Amazon $978 million. Renovating it means staying within what the old Italian Renaissance based design would allow without too much cost. This means less natural lighting, putting more interior meeting space which does not require windows. Only the new rooftop 2 floors have flexibility to put in modern windows.

As the ECB reduces its monthly purchases under its QE program to 60 billion euros from 80 billion euros starting in April 2017, the initial market reaction was that quantitative easing was going out. This says Barley is not the case, and markets are overreacting. The ECB is now ready to buy bonds yielding less than the deposit rate. The ECB promised to extend purchases to Dec. 2017 or further. Look deeper says Barley and ECB forecasts headline inflation at 1.7% in 2019, less than 2% target. So continued QE made sense but at a lower pace. Mask use is one of the best ways along with social distancing as it reduces the load factor of the virus, reduces the deadly power of the virus. So that the illness even if it happens would not end up being severe, giving patients a chance to recover quickly. Study after study in Germany, in the U.S., in Britain is confirming this. It is also common sense considering that there is a load factor in the virus infection. The bigger the load of virus intake through the nose while breathing in other people's droplets that are then entering our body through receptors in the nose, the bigger the intake, the more severe the infection.

Asymptomatic people infected by coronavirus are acting as spreaders of the coronaavirus making it more essential than ever that everyone wear masks. This is a widely accepted practice in Asia- wearing masks to prevent others from getting a virus. This now needs badly to become the practice in the U.S. and Europe. The longer it is delayed the worse the crisis can get and the longer it takes to eradicate it. Even low grade cotton masks are useful as is the practice in Asian countries. It is now part of the new guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. This needs to be adopted as safe practice everywhere.

A popular show on Japan's television network TBS and on Netflix Japan is "Extremely Inappropriate" that takes a widowed physical education teacher boarding a bus in 1986 Japan straight into 2024 and shows him with his rebellious teenage daughter. It contrasts the casual sexism, long work hours and culture of that time in the early postwar years with the concern for sexual harrassment in the workplace, and a culture that is moving away from long work hours. It sees something to value in both eras as the father changes as he adapts to the present and still keeps some of the better parts of the previous era.
