Getting it right now means he says not merely the defending American workers to prevent "offshoring of jobs, opening the borders, and sending sons and daughters to fight in endless foreign wars," but also how to defend the rights of minorities in America and of working class non-white people. In 2016 the Republican party got 8% of the black vote nationally, which was the lowest in 4 decades excluding the years Mr. Obama ran for election. The effort to highlight the work on behalf of Black people and Hispanic people was to take this number back up as far up as Republicans can to the level reached under Eisenhower. How Toyota's labor cost advantage is disappearing. By late 2009 Toyota's Georgetown Kentucky plant, 23 years old, where most workers are at the top of the pay scale could be the highest labor cost auto factory in the USA. A large number of Toyota workers are at the top wage of $25 an hour. Detroit's 4 year deal with the UAW gives them a 2 tier wage contract where lower paid workers earn only $26 an hour including benefits according to the Center for Automotive Research. At GM in 2011 its estimated the number of workers will be down by 6500 to 68000 workers, and one third of them earning the lower wage. How is Toyota responding? New hires will take 5 years not 3 to get to the top wage. And starting pay at a plant in Mississippi will be lower than the traditional $16. Its also cutting health care costs by setting up medical centers on site as at its San Antonio factory.

Tsai Ing-Wen is elected president of Taiwan by a landslide in the Jan. 2016 election. Tsai, leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was elected with 56 percent of the vote, compared to 31 percent for the Koumintang candidate Eric Chu. The DPP won 68 seats out of 113 in Taiwan's parliament. Tsai told a news conference about Taiwan- China relations - "I also want to emphasize that both sides have a responsibility to find mutually acceptable means of interaction that are based on dignity and reciprocity."

U.S. president Obama visits Saudi Arabia in April 2016. President Obama presents arguments for forging "a cold peace" between Iran and Saudi Arabia after proxy conflicts in the Middle East. During the visit president Obama will encourage dialogue between Iran and Saudi Arabia, at a time when Saudis are skeptical about U.S. policies in the region. Saudi Arabia has reduced the economic gains to Iran from lifting of sanctions and entering the oil market by ramping up Saudi production to bring down prices. The situation also affects Russia and Venezuela.

Christopher Lawton's interview with Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia Corporation, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Nokia will introduce a high end smart phone, the Lumia 900, at the C.E.S. gathering. Nokia has very little presence in the smartphone part of the business. In the third quarter of 2011, Nokia lost 39% of its global smartphone sales to the Apple iPhone and other competitors using the Android software. Elop says the Lumia offers a smoother experience and has social media integrated better in this product than rival smartphones. Asked about potential failure, Elop says Nokia will continue to learn from its experience and improve the product. He says Nokia is a 147 year old company and has reinvented itself in the past. He sees the competitive struggle in this business as similiar to a long marathon rather than a sprint.

The Federal Reserve reports show capacity utilization in the U.S. at 76.9% in April 2011. This is less than the 81% when the recession began in 2008. It shows an increase from the 67% capacity utilization in June 2009. The capacity utilization figures are 78.1% for the chemical industry, 80.5% for the computer and electronics industries, and 74% for the auto industry in March (which dropped temporarily to 63% in April as a result of the earthquake in Japan).
