On April 21, 2022, US president Biden talks to Americans in a live television address and says US will send an additional $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine. And an additional $500 million in economic assistance that takes the total economic assistance to $1 billion. He asks Congress to approve additional requests so that an uninterrupted flow of aid to Ukraine can be maintained to deter Russian aggression. He also opens up a path for direct entry into the US for some of the 5 million Ukrainian refugees. He calls attention to the 5 million refugees and to the millions of displaced children. He says about two thirds of the children in Ukraine are displaced by the war which he found to be shocking.

The launch of 5G is expected to impact every aspect of life in India and act as a transformational force. Mr. Modi said he is happy that school children from rural parts of India, part of a 1.3 billion population, are a part of  this rollout. Students he said were interacting with eminent scientists from the classroom using this technology. The goal is internet for all. Before 1 gigabyte of data cost Rs 300, now it costs Rs 10.  On average an Indian spends on 14 gigabytes of data a month which costs $150. This means, says Modi, that the poor are saving approximately Rs. 4000 a month. Adding that as the technology is developed locally- "This is not just India's decade, it is the century of India."

According to a report from the Southern Education Foundation about 51% of the students from pre-Kindergarden to 12th grade in the U.S. were eligible for the federal program of free and reduced price lunches, using an analysis of 2013 federal data. With the highest proportion of students in poverty concentrated in states in the southern and western U.S.. States all across the south, including Texas, show high concentrations approaching 60-70%, and states in the west such as California show about 50-60%. Midwestern states such as Illinois and Michigan show rates over 50%. The implications of this data are that these children from poor and sometimes chaotic backgrounds trail other children in educational development, are less likely to have educationally enriching activity, and more susceptible to dropping out or never attending college. Kent McGuire, president of the Southern Education Foundation says the map showing this is striking. He points to the disinclination to invest in young people today, compared to the focus on leadership in areas of creating opportunity and upward mobility in the decades of the 50's through the 80's. Michael Rebell of Teachers College at Columbia University, says reaching this point where a majority of public school children are from poor backgrounds has happened sooner, and the trend has accelerated over time. ...

Standard and Poor's changed its rating of U.S. Treasury securities from stable to negative. U.S. Treasury securites are still rated AAA. Moody's made no change in the rating. U.S gross debt as a percentage of GDP is 91.6%, with the comparable number for Germany at 80%, France 82%, Canada 84%, the UK at 77%, Japan 221%. The U.S. budget deficit as a percentage of GDP is 10.6%, the comparable number for Germany is 3.3%, France 7%, Canada 5.5%, the UK 10.4%. John Chambers, the head of the sovereign ratings committee at Standard & Poor's stated that "the sign of political gridlock was a key determinant in our outlook change." The budget deficit will go up to $1.5-$1.65 trillion, or over 10% of America's GDP in 2011. The gross debt for the U.S. is at $14.219 trillion, just short of the $14.294 trillion cap. With rising entitlement costs and the interest on debt this is expected to go over the debt ceiling as early as July 8, 2011. Vietnam's efforts to boost solar energy in 2018 by offering 9 cents per kilowatt hour to owners of solar farms is leading to unexpected surge in solar energy. Instead of the 850 MW of solar energy the production increased to 5 gigawatts by 2019. Investments had be done in 2 years for the offer by the state owned electricity company and electricity purchases would depend on daily needs. The huge increase has brightened the prospects for solar energy in this part of Asia.    Most of the solar energy comes from the southern part of Vietnam and the government is expanding the capacity of the power grid to handle the solar energy production. Vietnam is growing at 5-7% a year for two decades and power capacity is expected to double by 2030. The share of coal in the enrgy mix planned is 43%. The unexpected surge in solar energy production means the 10% fo solar energy in the energy mix was achieved ten years ahead of the schedule. This means fewer coal plants will be needed. In five years solar energy is expected to become cheaper to produce than energy from coal, according to energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie. Coal plants are also meeting public resistance, and regulatory hurdles. Coal plants take ten years to become operation. Solar energy projects can be completed in 2 years. This means solar can take a much larger share of energy production in the future .  ...

The local elections in Britain in 2019 show voter dissatisfaction with the mainparties. Both Conservatives and he Labour party each took 28% share of the vote. The big winners were the centrist Liberal Democrats with 19% of the vote. The Greens party also was a winner in the vote. About 8400 seats were up for election in this vote. Conservative party lost 1300 seats. The Labour Party disappointed because it was expected to win more seats as Conservatives did well in the last election in 2015, by winning 81 seats. The Liberal Dems and the Greens won 850 seats between them.  The stridently pro-Brexit Nigel Farage Independence Party did not put up candidates and a anti-Brexit party called ChangeUK also did not have candidates. Both will field candidates in the European elections causing the main parties to lose even more of their support that has dropped to 28%. This means Labour party leaders Corbyn and McDonnell might continue negotiations with Theresa May on Brexit plan. But as Rachel Sylvester reports in The Times today with May lacking support from her Conservative Party, her tenure as prime minister uncertain, there is little incentive for Labour leaders to go against the wishes of a majority of Labour MP's, voters, and members who are against Brexit. Corbyn also want to focus coming elections on austerity not Brexit. So this is not on Labour's agenda. Sylvester says a confirmatory referendum is looking like the only way out of the mess.    ...

There is also broad support for fentanyl action by the president using economic action on tariffs on nations Canada, Mexico, China that continue to let the flow of fentanyl across their borders for use by drug trafficking gangs in Mexico to send over US land border at the 2000 mile long US-Mexico border.

Congestion pricing has cut vehicles in central Manhattan (NY) district by 11% in 2025. One benefit it has made finding parking space easier. Peopel avoid taking the car if they can. Fee is $9 below 60th Street. It means safer quieter streets, easier walks, less traffic, and revenue for public transportation projects. 27 million fewer car trips say NY authorites were made compared to before the pricing was introduced. Traffic moves at speeds faster by about 4-5%, yet in the tunnels and bridges in NYC the morning commute traffic moves from 15% to 30% faster so it eases up a lot of traffic movement.  $550 million from revenue generated from the pricing can now be invested in the rail and subway transit with additional investments to upgrade it to make life easier for transit riders. This is improving quality of life for New Yorkers not just in the city district but in the outlying areas of NY state and NJ where 73,000 fewer cars leave every day for the commute into NY City. ...

French cycling enthusiast and sports writer Claude Droussent, 65, puts together Cycling Atlas Europe, a book showing 350 one day cycling trips one can do in Europe. It is intended to give people a chance to discover new places in a short few hours bike ride from where they are in a nature setting along mountainous terrain or along the coast. Natural gas prices are down by about half in the last month after warmer weather and higher inventories in Europe and the US. On January 6 2023 wholesale natural gas prices in Europe eased to 74 euros ($78) a megawatt hour, down from a high of 350 euros in late August. This is a significant development as it means blackouts, industrial closures, recession is less likely in Europe. It also helps bring inflation under control. Prices are back down to where they were before the Ukraine invasion. This is still seven times higher than prices in 2020 reports the WSJ. The lower the price the lower the bill for the German government. Across Europe 706 billion euros were allocated for support on natural gas price by governments since September 2021.

Following Scotland's decision to provide women's hygiene products free can India do the same and provide women's period products free, asks Isha Bhatia. She describes her experience with the lack of hygiene products for periods when she was growing up in India and remembers being handed a dirty cloth by her grandmother. About 70% of all reproductive diseases in women are caused by poor menstrual hygiene. The cost of Rs. 100-250 is too much cost for average Indian families. Only 18% of Indian women have access to sanitary pads. The cost should be brought down with government subsidizing manufacturing of sanitary pads so that it would cost less than 10 rupees or be provided free under government subsidized initiative for women's health.

A 5.75% increase in government support is lost in inflation. Melissa is a 23 year old student at the University of Bonn with just 25 euros a week for shopping on food in this story in Dw.com. This means living on potatoes, cottage cheese and vegetarian schnitzel. She gets  about 1000 euros a month, 750 euros from the government and 219 euros from her parents. Of this 400 euros go to rent, 300 for semester fees, 

A person is considered risking poverty living on 1251 euros a month. Government support is set at a maximum of 934 euros a month for students not living with parents.

With the sale of its stake in TNK-BP to Rosneft BP will have 19.75% of Rosneft. It will lose TNK-BP's oil production of 986 billion barrels of oil equivalent, and it will gain 900 million barels from its share of Rosneft output. BP's oil reserves will increase by 12.5% after the deal. TNK-BP has paid annual dividend of an average of $2.2 billion since 2004, BP payout from Rosneft is estimated at $500 million. BP's share of the new Rosneft after the deal would be $3.6 billion in expected earnings for 2013 compared to $4.1 billion from the 50% share of TNK-BP. Some of this dilution may be restored by share buybacks by BP.

Le Monde reports from Havana Cuba in 2026- 2 million people have left since 2021, the situation is looking increasingly hopeless. There is the 800,000 called the "walking generation" that walked to th southern border of the US during the Biden administration 2020-2024, How did this happen the country of Cuba losing so many people, a third of its population? In 1960 it was 7.1 million. Taking Mexico as an example Mexico's population was 37 million in 1960, it is now 133 million up threefold. At the same rate Cuba's today would be about 20 million in 2026, today it is about 10 million. Instead of 20 million it is half that. About 3 million left the country and population growth simply stopped as the country went from crisis to crisis. Was the revolution worth it, were people in Europe, the US and Latin America who looked to Cuba as a model completely mistaken and was the story oversold to the point where someone like Chavez would try to bring that revolution to a developed economy such as Venezuela as late as 1998, when Cuba was already without US cooperation a state that had fallen behind, by 2026 it was like going back in time 50 years. Could the US offer something better to these countries in the western hemisphere. Did Kennedy JFK promise so much in 1960 and did later US administrations leave Cuba  in a state where it would not get foreign investment and be sanctioned and blocked from access to new technology in so many ways. There is much to reflect on the failure of Cuba, the story of glorious narrative that was told that overlooks the poor condition of the country and benefitted the people the least.  ...

West Bengal gets a new start after 50 years of mismanagement, corruption and breakdown of law and order, and economic failures, with a new BJP Modi led administration. The speed of the changes are simply astonishing as a state of close to 100 million people -where industrialization never took off as it has in other states, and rural poverty exists in ways thought to belong to the colonial days under the British- gets an administration at the federal level under Modi committed to industrialization, modernization of the economy, on the same rapid scale as that launched in the rest of eastern India. This is a territory half the size of the European Union, once called the Bengal Presidency under the British Empire, comprised of states of Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh, a region where the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers from the mighty Himalayas flow into the sea. It is a low moment for India similar to the period after the Proleterian Cultural Revolution of Mao in China by 1970 and the few remaining leaders under premier Chou-en-lai making a resolute effort under Deng Xiaoping to make a new effort to modernize and industrialize China working with the US and the European Union. That effort went through the initial phase to 1990 to familiarize Communist China with the US and European market systems, and a new phase to 2010 by which time most of these goals had been achieved. India is poised to make that scale of change today over the next two decades as it is already familiarized with the US and European market systems and its net step is in technological advancement and rapid industrialization at scale something that alone can meet the aspirations of the South Asian region. ...

Most of America's younger generation, the vast majority of children will be excluded from these games. DW.com writes about the cheapest ticket listed on the FIFA website at $8625 and one ticket listed for $690,000. When told the cheapest ticket for the first Paraguay US game was $1000 US president DJT said it was "ridiculous," that he woudn't pay that either, and expressed real disappointment. DW.com raises other questions about the sudden 50% increase in teams and 60% increase in games for the World Cup in 2026. Teams suddenly up from 32 to 48, and games from 64 to 104. If more smaller football associations or countries were to be added, would it have been better to try this out in smaller steps? Has this diluted the sporting quality of individual games. If more games why would prices jump this much? Last World Cup the average price of a ticket was the same as the list price and no resale markets to create artificially high prices in the stratosphere driving out most buyers. People in Japan are living longer healthier lives. So much so that people are working well into their 70's. In Nagano, Japan, people say that those in their 40's and 50's are like a child with a runny nose, and people in their 60's and 70's are in the prime of their careers. In this WSJ report, 38 years old Norohiro Aizawa is a part time farmer, who says he plans to work into his 70's like many farmers in Japan. Today his father in his early 70's is active and in charge. Sachiko Kobayashi runs a crafts business, has a job making box lunches, and a garden full of pumpkins and radishes. She is 65 and gets up at 3 am. In Nagano she is called by the term pre-elderly, not elderly. For elderly she has a long way to go. Japan has 29% of the population in under over 65 years group, Europe 21% and US 17%. Yet something else is happening. People are just taking better care of themselves and their health, and living, working longer. A 70 year old today in Nagano is in health status like a 60 year old one or two generations ago. Perceptions of what is elderly have changed.    Japan's White Paper on the Elderly in 2021 shows studies suggesting that many in the 65-74 year group do not share traits associated with the term elderly.  Only 6% require care by others. Half of 65-69 year olds hold jobs, and a third of those in their early 70's also hold jobs. Life expectancy in Japan stretches into the late 80's for women, and early 80's for men. This is almost 5-8 years more than countries like the UK with a strong national health service. In April 2021 a revised Employment Law took effect, telling big employers to offer work to workers until age 70, up from previously government sanctioned retirement age of 65 years. Government says it is meant to protect the right of people to work longer. There is even a term called late-elderly.  Oshima 82 of Nagano, leads a volunteer group that shoots video of community festivals and works late into the night, and is cited in this WSJ story as saying that even if people called him late elderly, his response is oh yeah? I don't care. It is all about living a full life, terms don't matter at all when one stays healthy.   ...

A 35% rise against the dollar of the Brazilian real and a rise of 80% of the Brazilian Bovespa index in 2009, following quickly after the global financial crisis, shows the big swings in emerging markets stock and currency values. Brazil is a big exporter of agricultural and mining commodities. Brazilian government is concerned about short term investors who are piling into investments there, but could pull out quickly in another crisis. The government imposed a 2% tax on foreign investments- designed to reduce currency volatility and discourage short term speculative investors. A slowdown in demand for commodities from China or other countries could quickly reverse this rise. And a rise of this proportion in so short a time, coming on the heels of a financial crisis, shows the nature of swings in the global economy that are of increasig concern today. In October 2008 Brazil's currency lost a third of its value compared to August 2008, and the Bovespa index fell by 50%. The central bank had to use its currency reserves to prevent a severe drop in the value of the real. Short term investors were pulling money out of the stock market resulting in dollar outflows, and many Brazilian companies that had bet against the dollar in currency derivative contracts suffered huge losses. The situation was similiar in Mexico. It shows the fragility of economies depending on commodities exports, and the lack of mechanisms to track these derivatives and to restrain speculative short term investors. ...
