Officials from South Oil Company say they have boosted production from 1.65 barrels a day to 2 million barrels a day. The production gains came after older nonproducing wells were repaired and reopened and from drilling new oil wells. Jabar Leaby, managing director of South Oil Company in Basra has plans to raise output to 2.25 million barrels a day by end of 2006. He is negotiating for more administrative and financial help from the Oil Ministry. U.S. military engineers working with South Oil engineers are expected to finish a number of big projects that will boost production. One of these projects is hooking up some 60 wells that were never completed because of a lack of parts and some that were abandoned prematurely. This according to Capt. Highlighted green for fuel economy miles per gallon information and green for types of vehicles sold and the mix which is weighted towards bigger vehicles. More than 55% of all new vehicles purchased in 2005 were minivans, pickup trucks, vans or SUVs, says R.L. Polk, an auto-data provider in Southfield, Mich. Despite gas prices topping $3 a gallon in California and other parts of the country, light trucks have outsold passenger-car vehicles for the first six months of this year, making up 52.5% of total vehicle sales, according to Autodata Corp. The average fuel economy of new 2006 models was virtually flat with a year ago at 21 miles per gallon, according to the latest EPA report, despite the increasing deployment of technologies such as systems that shut off cylinders in V-8 engines and six-speed transmissions. The incremental gains from those technologies were offset by consumers, who continued to buy lower-mileage minivans, pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles....

According to information from Goldman Sachs investment gains including stocks contributed 23% of overall profit at listed nonfinancial companies in 1st quarter 2007, up from 13% in prior quarter. An example is China Yangste Power Company, a utility company. Its board secretary is quoted here that 30% of the company's investments are made to make quick profits. These speculative profits create a virtuous circle where higher investment profits increase overall profits at listed companies and lead to investor perception to increase prices even higher. This increases the risk in the market and was last seen when companies like Intel saw higher prices during the tech bubble in the USA and becomes dangerous downward spiral when the process goes in reverse and the companies show losseson their investments driving the market much lower than otherwise. A government survey quoted here shows that profits in 2007 as of May end are running 42% above 2006. How much of this is a result of profits on stock investments? ...

A trial by Merck and Schering Plough that lasted 2 years with 720 patients in the Netherlands found that while Vytorin helped reduce cholesterol more than Zeta taken alone, the plaques of patients on Vytorin grew twice as fast as the one on Zeta alone. Vytorin is a combination of Zetia and Zocor in a single pill. About 60% of patients take Zetia in the Vytorin form. Zetia by itself reduces cholesterol by 15-20% but its not clear if it reduces the plaque formation in arteries at all. The trial was completed in April 2006 but released now only after articles were written about it in the media. Zetia and Vytorin account for 20% of the overall cholesterol lowering drug market. Its about 70% of Schering's earnings and about 100 million prescriptionhave been filled in US so far. The drugs cost $3 a day. For Merck its reputation after the Vioxx issues would be affected by these results leaving some doubts in the public mind.

This exceptional article in the NYT by Emily Feng and Carlos Tejada shows the social changes taking place in China as more women and men decide to postpone marraige. For the first time there are more women than men in master's degrees programs in China. Women in China are now increasingly better educated and prefer to be independent, not dependent on their spouses as in the previous generation. A typical Chinese household has 3.1 people in 2015 compared to 4.43 people in 1982, according to the China National Bureau of Statistics. Fewer children, more people living alone, women living independently, and seniors living alone are some of the reasons.

Joachim Gauck is the first of 11 presidents of the Federal Republic of Germany who is not from a political party. His work in the German citizens movement, as a pastor in the former East Germany, and his guidance in difficult times lends authenticity and a sense of restoring Germany's place in the world. He stood for values- engagement, a balanced wise approach, courage when freedom was under attack, candor. During the 10 years after reunification he headed the authority investigating former files of the Stasi, secret police network of East Germany. His role in recent years also remained relevant and his words worth listening to. Early on in the refugee crisis, when he visited a refugee camp at the Turkey-Syria border in June 2014, he cautioned for a wiser middle approach that took into account both the humanitarian crisis and what was politically possible, and the need for a wider European solution- "a honest, pragmatic, and sober debate." Germany would have been well served says DW.com if his words were taken into account. Gauck also told Germans to take a more active role in defense, and adopt a posture of confidence in foreign policy, which is happening today.   ...
