In 2007 Sharp, a son of Polish immigrants, sold the hotel to Bill Gates and Prince Talal for $3.8 billion. The owners own the real estate and the properties are meticulously laid out , and evertying down to the bed sheets and pillows and employees is planned by the Four Seasons company which only runs the properties. In the process almost all the leverage for what gets done is with Four Seasons. Problems in the current environment for owners as Four Seasons will not relax any of the requirements which are costly and reduce margins.

Jim Whittaker, in 1963 first American on Everest, REI first employee, and promoter of life in the outdoors. He climbed A 14,000 peak with Robert Kennedy that is known by the name Kennedy, and ran RFK's campaign for president. A picture of him with John Glenn and Don Walsh in the BBC. He died at the age of 97 in Washington State with aview from his home of the Olympic mountains. He describes the climg on Everest and his life in his memoir Life on the Edge. He returned to Everest in 1983 with son Leif who trains athletes in climbing and outdoors. When he climbed Everest he says Gombu his Sherpa guide was the shortest and he was the tallest. He reflects on life and humility in the face of Nature and God's presence around us- "You learn, when you climb a difficult mountain, you leave your ego behind and learn that you're just a little micro-speck in this life. The U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Yellen tells a Boston Fed conference on economic opportunity and inequality: "The extent and continuing increase in inequality in the U.S. greatly concern me. I think it is appropriate to ask whether this trend is compatible with values rooted in our nation's history, among them the high value Americans have traditionally placed on equality of opportunity." Yellen pointed out that the high inequality impedes economoic mobility which impairs the recovery. Income disparities of this type reduce the country's economic potential, said Yellen. Recent housing gains have helped restore losses of housing wealth with more gains at the bottom. Yellen emphasized the need to invest in education and opportunities for business ownership as ways to improve economic mobility. Low inflation or deflationary trends with lower oil and food prices, give the Fed more flexibility to reduce the numbers of the long term unemployed or part time employed for lack of full time work, a critical goal for the Yellen Fed....

In this exhibit in the Library of Congress Herblock in the Washington Post lampoons the efforts in 1952 of Senators Joseph McCarthy and Jenner to place unfounded criticism on Adlai Stevenson the Democratic candidate for president. The 1952 campaign for president in the US is reminiscent of the campaigns since 2016, 2020, 2024. In 1952 the US was engaged in the Korean War and there was increasing fatigue with that war as Communist China pushed back Gen. MacArthur's forces and the armies moved back and forth across the Korean peninsula. Eisenhower offered to go to Korea to find an end to the war. The Korean War comes only a few years after China became a People's Republic in 1949 under the Communist party led by Mao-tse-tung and the Berlin Crisis. This led to an effort by Senator Joseph McCarthy and Senator Jenner in the 1952 campaign to make all sorts of criticism much of it unfounded about Adlai Stevenson who had just been elected Governor of Illinois. Eisenhower was a much respected figure and had planned not to run or run as an Independent and only agreed under much persuasion from Dewey and the Eastern Establishment (New York and Boston). Eisenhower had led American forces in the Western Command under George Marshall and president Harry Truman and had not sought the presidency only to have his name placed on the ballot in New Hampshire. In the middle of a campaign Eisenhower (Ike) did not openly refute McCarthy and Jenner but had showed considerable discomfort with their unfounded rhetoric and tactics. ...

Economic progress in South Asia may finally put behind it simmering political tensions is evident from nature of this proposal on Kashmir by Pakistan. This proposal by President Musharraf is for India and Pakistan to recognize the "line of control" as a de facto border, gradually withdraw troops, and support a new body to run the government in Kashmir. Musharraf say Pakistan then "will have to, yes," give up its claims on Kashmir. The region would have to be given more autonomy to run its affairs. Musharraf would still have to win support from the political parties for this proposal to take shape and be able to control militants in the region who oppose a settlement.

The Times of London reports on the decision by the Supreme Court of Britain that Boris Johnson abused his powers and acted unlawfully in suspending parliament. Separately BBC analysis shows that even though Johnson is relying on polls and planning to run people vs. parliament this means that its the courts as part of what he calls the establishment he is running against.  Nigel Farage called for Johnson's adviser Cummings to resign showing that the Leave campaign is not what it was when Britain voted to leave the EU in the first referendum on June 23, 2016, now over 3 years and 3 months since then.

With profits of $11-12 billion at GM and Ford Motor in 2022 and $11 billion at Stellantis for the first half of the year there is sentiment among union workers that workers wages should be raised. Ford Motor says profits go into huge investments in the electric car industry transformation. Wages suffered from the collapse of the auto industry in the 2009 period and have only gradually recovered since, falling to $16 per hour as an entry point wage going up to $32 an hour. Unions are looking for wage increases of up to 40%. A 25% wage increase was negotiated recently for an electric car plant run by GM and its partner.

Following a $77 million loss at The Washington Post Jeff Bezos is working on restructuring its operations. The Post has 2.5 million paying subscribers. Bezos sees the paper with potential of 100 million paying subscribers. He sees the need to get more people from the middle of the country and cover topics people are concerned about. One suggestion was to do a third newsroom for social media and service journalism. This has run into problems with some of the staff resigning. Bezos has suggested one way to attract more people is to rewrite articles from other sources. Staff at the paper see by contrast the role of The Post in original journalism.

According to information from Goldman Sachs investment gains including stocks contributed 23% of overall profit at listed nonfinancial companies in 1st quarter 2007, up from 13% in prior quarter. An example is China Yangste Power Company, a utility company. Its board secretary is quoted here that 30% of the company's investments are made to make quick profits. These speculative profits create a virtuous circle where higher investment profits increase overall profits at listed companies and lead to investor perception to increase prices even higher. This increases the risk in the market and was last seen when companies like Intel saw higher prices during the tech bubble in the USA and becomes dangerous downward spiral when the process goes in reverse and the companies show losseson their investments driving the market much lower than otherwise. A government survey quoted here shows that profits in 2007 as of May end are running 42% above 2006. How much of this is a result of profits on stock investments? ...

Gilberto Hinjosa was state head of the Democratic Party in Texas. He resigned and said he would not run for reelection after he said that Democrats should take moderate positions on social issues like transgender. Ken Martin the new head of the Texas Democrats says the party has to show that it is present and give people a sense that we give a damn about their lives. Democrats are seen as paying little attention to South Texas. This report in NYT says Texas is urbanizing and 5 of the 15 largest cities in America are San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Austin. Another 2 million population increase in Texas in last 4 years, by 2030 in redistricting 4 more seats in Congress could be added for Texas. For Democrats to be competitive the road runs through Texas says this report in NYT. A lot depends on understanding that Latinos are conservative on cultural issues, immigration border issues affect all people in Texas, Latinos and Whites alike.

Commenting on the new Higher Education Commission proposed to replace the University Grants Commission, a former Vice Chancellor of Delhi University Dinesh Singh, says the HECI is designed to overcome the shortcomings of the UGC when it comes to monitoring the quality of education. Yet much depends on the people who run HECI.

After the resignations of Browett and Forstall, other executives Eddy Cue, head of Internet software and services, Craig Federighi and Jonathan Ive, hardware design chief, assume more important roles inside Apple. Browett was hired recently from Dixon Retail in the UK to run Apple retail stores. Some of his scheduling changes at Apple were received badly at the stores. Mr Forstall ran the iOS software operations and was highly regarded by Jobs except that he failed to get along with other executives. He and design chief for hardware Jonathan Ive could not stay in the same room together because of personality conflicts. Jobs was seen as a decider in these situations, a role new CEO Cook did not choose to play preferring a smooth running team with fewer people conflicts.

Emmanuel Macron graduated from Sciences Po University in 2004 with a degree in public affairs. He joins the Finance Ministry as an inspector and then buys himself out of government service contract by 2008 to join a private bank. He arranges an acquisition from Nestle and other business deals during this period. In 2012 he is appointed as deputy secretary general for the president's office after Francois Hollande a socialist is elected to the presidency. In 2014 he is offered the position of Minister of Industry and Digital Affairs in the second Manuel Valls government. He makes some changes to French government but opposes the wealth tax or tax on business, and is generally pro-business, though he acts as a member of the Socialist party.  He uses this period to build momentum for his own run for the presidency as support for Hollande falters having lost support from his working class base with Macron and Valls inspired changes.  Macron finally announces he will run for the presidency forming his own En Marche movement which he finances with his own fund raising. Throughout this period right up to the election in 2017 Macron has not run for public office. When he wins the presidency in that year he lacks the experience needed as the youngest president in French history at the age of 39. Like another young president Obama he handles his public image with the media for his En Marche movement promising to unblock France. This public image and his lack of experience makes him impervious to the social changes going on in France that lead to the yellow vest protests in 2018. This is a period when there are changes in the midwest as workers in Michigan and other midwestern states turn away from Hillary Clinton and Obama.  French workers are in the position of workers in the US with the decline of manufacturing, much of it shifted with the supply chain to China and Japan, and the gap opening between rural and urban tech educated areas. Macron follows Obama's quick rise from Senator to run for president yet lacks experience, and lacks sufficient grasp of the social changes with loss of manufacturing, the wide gaps between rural and urban tech educated people, conditions in the rural and farming areas. Macron survives this period, is reelected in 2022 with the help of socialist Melenchon voters. He says he will govern differently, less distant from average Frenchmen, but his instincts are to push for pension reform. At a time of cost of living crisis, and when the French budget office says the change in pension from 62 to 64 was not critical at the present time when inflation was hitting the public after the pandemic. Macron does this by Article 49 in the way he has done under the Manuel Valls government, by executive action alone. This time he faces a no confidence motion in parliament in March 2023 following some of the largest protests France has seen in years, with two thirds of the French according to FR24 opposing the change in pension law. Women see this as coming at a time when age discrimination hurts their chances of earning a living after 50 years of age.  Age discrimination is widespread in France, in a way it is not in Germany, say reports in the NYT. And with the cost of living crisis acts as a major hurdle for the average French person, if pensions are delayed without addressing these cultural issues in France. The result is that the protests have substance and Macron is seen as not sensitive to this at a time when he lacks a majority in parliament. ...
