He also took part in battles in Indochina then a French colony and was promoted to commander of French Atlantic fleet in 1970's. De Gaulle rescued France again in the post war governments and set up the strong central authority of the President of the Republic in the 1960's, modernized French agriculture, rebuilt its infrastructure, in the post war period. The law in Germany says migrants seeking asylum can get jobs and benefits, training, yet if their asylum claim is rejected they have to be deported to their home country. Here a migrant from Gambia is shown having integrated with language classes, and training, yet his future is uncertain.  Germany's immigration policy under chancellor Merkel has changed first welcoming, and then to stave off challenge from the far right AfD party in elections it has set the task of deporting all those whose asylum applications are rejected. About 35% of applicants have been integrated by way of language classes, training for work. . Germany needed more people to both meet labor shortages, and to do jobs Germans did not want to do. Yet in the eastern part of Germany the mood has swung against such immigration policies and the Merkel CDU and CSU parties now see the best solution is for economic refugees to stay home and for Germany to help countries in Africa with aid and government help to stabilize the economic conditions.  ...

The US economy is growing at a much faster pace than Europe or China in the last quarter of 2021- at 7% annualized growth in the fourth quarter up from 2% in the third quarter, according to Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. This compares to 2% in eurozone and 4% in China. Major US ports such as Los Angeles are processing 20% more container volume in 2021 than in 2019, while Rotterdam and Hamburg are almost flat compared to 2019 level. Consumption of durable goods has jumped 45% above 2018 levels in the US, only 2% in eurozone, according to ECB data. The factory gate prices in China are far outpacing the consumer prices in China, suggesting weak domestic demand and strong foreign demand. Lars Jensen, head of network at container ship company A.P. Moller-Maersk says the global supply bottlenecks were started by this surge in US demand with more ships headed for the US taking ships away from other places. The US economy will grow at 6% in 2021 and 4% in 2022, with wages growing 4% a year above the pre-pandemic trend rate, compared with 1% in eurozone, according to Bank for International Settlements. This is pushing inflation up in other countries by pushing up the value of the dollar. In Mexico hitting 7.4% and the central bank raising interest rates 0.5% point to 5.5%. In Russia inflation up to 8.4% and central bank raising interest rates by 1percentage point to 8.5%. The equipment investment in the US is up by 13% this year according to JP Morgan Chase, only 3.6% in eurozone, 0.1% in Japan. All this is creating a large gap between the US and Europe, US and China in economic growth and demand growth, and in income growth. ...

In a fast changing energy environment with upcoming COP26 summit in Glasgow and shift away from fossil fuels, Exxon is considering dropping a $30 billion LNG project in Mozambique and multibillion dollar project in Vietnam. Exxon has a remade Board with 3 new directors chosen by an activist investor and 2 other new directors. It takes years for such projects to generate energy supplies and years more to be profitable. Exxon Board members are also facing pressure from investors to restrain fossil fuel investment to limit carbon emissions and return more cash to shareholders.

Emma Tucker, chief editor of WSJ, interviews Argentina's new president Milei. Milei plans to overhaul the economy, as inflation surges even after a large devaluation of the peso. He was recently elected with 58% support, yet faces opposition from unions and the Peronist party who calld a one national strike this week. Argentines are fed up with inflation and the repeated financial crises, more than any other of the G-20 nations. Milei is pursuing a path of rapidly reducing the state intervention in the economy to calm down rampant inflation.

The insecticide resistant dry season Stephensi anopheles mosquito has made its way from India to Africa through shipping routes. In India aggressive action on malaria is keeping it controlled. In Africa it was first detected in Djibouti in 2020. At the time in 2020 Djibouti was declaring an end to malaria only to find 70,000 cases by 2022. It has now spread to Ethiopia. Stephanie Nolan provides this report from Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, where it breeds even in dry season in water treatment places, open water and the country lacks India's resources to eliminate this threat to health.

This NYT piece suggests that 9 new members for the 30 member board have already been named and none of them are non Japanese. So the similiar WSJ piece stands corrected as these new members have already been named. With 2.54 million cars sold in the US and about half imported from Japan this does not reflect internationalization by any stretch of the imagination, as the NYT puts it the rest are all "graying salarymen". Toyota still reflects its narrow parochial centre in Aichi prefecture around Nagoya and growth has not changed the outlook. Compare this with Sony. There are advantages for Toyota in its hometown centred way of doing things so as not to be distracted by the latest management fad, and maintain focus on quality and efficiency but considering the expansion in overseas markets its amazing that the Board should be so underrepresented with other nationalities.
