The U.S. Federal Reserve's forecast for the American economy is for growth in GDP of 2.2%-2.7% for 2012, wih unemployment of 8.2-8.5% by the end of 2012. The Commerce Dept. estimates for GDP growth are 3.0 percent annual rate for the 4th quarter 2011. Fed chairman Bernanke remains cautious about the economic prospects for 2012. Higher oil prices are expected to push inflation above the 2.0% Fed target for 2012. Bernanke's description of the recovery in early 2012 is that it is "uneven and modest" and unlikely to improve much for unemployment.

The second largest business daily La Tribune has suspended debt repayment. The Tribune fall in sales was 33%. Mediapart is a web newspaper designed around anti-establishment scoops. It needs 40,000 subscriptions at 9 euros a month ($12) to survive. Subscriptions increased from 25,000 in June to 47,000 at the end of 2010.

Goldman Sachs estimates litigation related losses at $3.4 billion and J.P. Morgan Chase estimates litigation related losses of $4.5 billion after the financial crisis of 2008. Citigroup's estimate is $4 billion, Bank of America's is $1.5 billion, Wells Fargo at $1.2 billion above reserves. U.S. Congressional investigation shows the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) missed two opportunities, one in 2007 and another in 2010, to launch formal probes into whether the 2003-2006 Chevrolet Cobalt and the Saturn Ion had a defect leading to non deployment of airbags. Barclays rights issue in 2013 to meet UK regulatory demands. The planned rights issue will raise about 5 billion pounds and will bring the bank's ratio of equity to risk weighted assets to around 9.5%. The Prudential Regulation Authority, a branch of the Bank of England responsible for supervision of British banks, is requiring British banks to hold equity amounting to 3% of total assets. Barclay's leverage ratio is at 2.5%, according to the PRA.
