Gen. Christopher Neve of 82nd Airborne and Eighth Army to be new US Army chief of staff in May 2026. He is known for restoring traditional army discipline to the 82nd Airborne Division. This has brought him to the attention of Defense Secretary Hegseth and the US president. This is similar to Eisenhower who after West Point gained from his relationship with Gen. Pershing in 1920's and later by 1940 with General Marshall who appointed him to Commander in the North African and European campaigns in WWII. One difference is that Neve came up through the Army's Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Arizona University. Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg says this about Neve- "What he did which I admired, he brought the 82nd—it had drifted away a bit—back to traditional training and traditional values.”  Kellogg a former 82nd Airborne Division commander himself. He was brought to Hegseth's attention for a future appointment by Kellogg. He was then appointed to assistant to the Defense Secretary. Eisenhower was assistant to Pershing who mentored him in the interwar years in the 20's for the Battlefield Monuments Commission and for Pershing's Memoirs on WWI. The 82nd Airborne is a paratrooper unit that saw action in closing days of WW1 and in WWII in Normandy Sicily, throughout the war. Based in Fort Liberty, North Carolina. Kevin Warsh was appointed by George W. Bush in 2006 as Fed governor. He was the youngest governor in Fed history at that time at age 35 years. His education is public schooling in California, a degree in public policy at Stanford and a law degree from Harvard. His term at the Fed was 2006 to 2011. During the financial crisis he gained experience, and after term at Fed was lecturer at Stanford Business School, and scholar at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University. Warsh was considered by DJT for the position of Fed chair but was considered to lack enough experience compared to Powell who was made Fed chairman. In 2026 Warsh 56 years old and with more experience was considered by DJT as the top choice when Hassett was retained at the National Economic Council NEC.

Atsuyoshi Koike of Japan's Rapidus co-developing with IBM new 2 nanometer chip for production in 2026, wafer by wafer in 15 days instead of in batches taking 50 days. Koike says he will charge a Shinkansen fee referring to the bullet trains in Japan. He sees the failure by Japan to join the US in co-producing chips as a mistake, ceding ground to Taiwan's TSMC and South Korea's Samsung. Japan's government supports Rapidus with $600 million in funding and anotehr $1.7 billion comes from Japanese companies Sony, NTT and others. By comparison TSMC will invest $56 billion to produce advanced chips in scale in 2026. Japan is step by step getting back into the chip business by making a joint effort with the US.

Senator Schumer calls it a "momentous 24 hours here in the US Congress, a legislative one two punch that you rarely see." Schumer negotiated a major climate change action bill for $369 billion in the Senate, that also covers tax changes to cover costs, and helps cut drug and health care expenses of Americans. The second quarter shows healthy job gains of average 375,000 a month and unemployment at 3.6%. The economy declined by 1.1% but much of this was from a slowdown in home and business construction sectors sensitive to higher interest rates and from higher inventory. Consumer spending increased by 1% during the quarter. The Fed's series of 0.75 percentage points interest rate increases had softened inflation expectations before they get entrenched in the economy. This makes it possible for Democrats to present a message to ordinary Americans that president Biden is getting things done with 2 legislative achievements. A $280 billion bill for investment in the semiconductor industry in the US. And a huge win on climate change with the $269 billion Schumer is negotiating in the US Congress. It is the opposite of what Republicans are saying is Biden's failure to tackle inflation. Appropriately Biden and Schumer are calling this the bill the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. How did Schumer get this done? After the Ukraine war and EU decision to shut down Russian oil supplies, cut oil and gas use by 15%, and the climate change action inducing fires and floods, there is increasing awareness about climate change action as vital for our future all over the world. This gives more confidence to Democrats to negotiate a temporary continuation of oil and gas, with increased exports of US LNG to Europe. Senator Manchin from an energy producing state of West Virginia was brought over to Schumer's side with this idea. What Biden gets is a 40% reduction of US carbon emissions over 2005 levels, enough to get within reach of the 50% he promised at COP26 in Glasgow. It is a win-win for all sides and for the American people, and shows that patience and hard work, and persistence in the face of adversity can bring results. ...

Folarin Balogun of the US Soccer Team in the World Cup Soccer 2026- born in Brooklyn of Nigerian parents settled in London chooses the US team. He scored 2 goals in the opener against Paraguay. Balogun fills a gap in the US team which managed just 3 goals in 4 World Cup matches in 2022. The lack of good strikers was a weakness in the US team. Balogun says he has the kind of US fan support  that he feel he has to return with his game. “There were so many fans motivating me and telling me how much they wanted me to represent the US." He says of Pulisic and his teammates taking him out to dinner.  “CP, a lot of the boys were there. … It was cool and they made me feel welcome." Balogun has two roles he plays both as a striker wiht his speed and positional awareness. And a defender in turnovers he acts as the first line of defense to win the ball back.

Johannes Klaebo does 50 kms crosscountry ski in 2 hours 6 minutes 45 seconds- Milan Cortina Olympics 2026. Only American speed skater Eric Heiden Lake Placid ,NY Olympics 1980, comes close to Klaebo's persistence and composure in event after event, race after race. New York City faces a $2 billion deficit in current fiscal year in 2026 and $10 billion the following year. This means there is less funding for new Mayor Mamdani's programs for groceries/transport for New Yorkers. Mamdani was elected by people in the hope that he could find ways for struggling New Yorkers to handle the cost of living crisis in 2026. New programs Mamdani promised were free bus service with costs annually (cost 0.8 billion), new rent stabilized units (annual cost $7 billion),  universal child care (annual cost $ 6 billion). A state corporate tax hike could generate $5 billion and a millionaires tax $4 billion, not enough for $13.8 billion cost for these services. The other problem is the way the city has handled its finances- this report shows declining projections for expenditures under former mayor Adams for public assistance, rental assistance, and MTA subsidies items which one would expect to go up in a large city the size of New York with new immigrants.The report says the shortfalls were met by using funds meant for the next year. Already Mamdani is not able to expand the state voucher program for residents facing eviction because of these budget constraints. This is the pattern in New York of making new promises not funded on the revenue side. Mamdani promised smaller class sizes but did not show where the funding for extra teachers would come from. For New Yorkers this adds a bit of realism to the idea that a new Mayor and new promises is the answer to its problems. Only about two thirds of its budget comes from its revenues the rest from federal and state funding which means an overall solution firing on all fronts, with federal and local cooperation, private investment, good governance, foreign investment, is needed to tackle the problems of major cities like New York. ...

Nossiter of the NYT describes the growing popularity of Nicolas Sarkozy in France as he tries to regain the presidency. Sarkozy's book, which has placed the importance of preserving France's identity as the main question in the upcoming general election, has climbed to the top of a popular best seller list. With weakness on the right in local elections, Mayor Juppe of Bordeaux and Francois Hollande appearing content with the status quo, Sarkozy hopes to gain the support of voters dissatisfied with the way France is tackling terrorism and its sense of identity as a predominantly Catholic and Christian country. France's political scene which makes it harder for outsiders to break into politics is likely to help Sarkozy, says Nossiter. The other factor is the campaigning style of Sarkozy and projection of strong leadership- which may be more attuned to the present voter sentiment shaken by terrorism than it was in the last election when he was seen as arrogant and self-centred. Sarkozy also lost the last election because of the economy, something that has not improved under Hollande, more likely because the economy takes many years to change to a pattern of growth following a crisis and beyond the control of any particular party. ...

France's 3300 Total Energies gas stations cap gas pries at $8.50 a gallon comapred to $4.22 at market rates in the US. Total Energies CEO Pouyanne says the cap is possible so long as the French government does not impose awindfall profits tax on the company. Profits at the company rose to 5.8 billion for hte last quarter up 51%. The cost of the cap is about $580 million so the company is still way ahead and this preempts the possible windfall profits tax which might go even further. At the same time the company gains public respect.
