Mnay people who have engineering degrees and jobs which pay 60,000 to $75,000 in the auto companies are now visiting food banks as they exhaust their unemployment benefits. They live in suburbs of Detroit, in Rochester Hills, in Dearborn Heights, in Taylor and so on. THe unemployment rate has reached 14.1% and there are more layoffs ahead. THis is also affecting the health care business as companies cut benefits. By the end of of 2009 100,000 residents will have lost their benefits, according to the state's unemployment insurance agency. THe US Department of Agriculture provides 20% of the food aid in the state to food banks and is watching the situation closely. In May, the caseload of the Michigan Food Assistance Program, which adminsters the USDA's food stamp aid for the state rose to 719,000 households, up 3.1% in April and nearly triple the figure in 2000. THe USDA has doubled its shipments to Gleaners, a food bank, which says it is stretched, as it does not serve the once affluent suburbs....

At the conclusion of the summit of the G-8 the Obama administration had to drag along other countries to get to the $12 billion goal for 3 years of food aid to the rural poor and farmers, which is well short of the $15 billion discussed a few days earlier at the summit. Of this $4 billion a year, the USA will provide $500 million a year. THe $15 billion is itself a floor for such assistance in prior years. says Gawain Kripke, policy director for Oxfam International, "at this point the money is not looking all that good." Allan Meltzer, professor of political economy at Carnegie-Mellon University and the author of the most comprehensive history of the Fed, and John Taylor, atop Treasury official under George Bush both oppose expanding the powers of the Fed and putting it in charge of controlling systemic risk. Meltzer says the Fed exacerbated the crisis by keeping rates too low for too long, and did nothing to control systemic risk. He also says the in testimony to the House Financial Services Committtee, that the Fed has in its whole history never done well in controlling systemic risk. It has failed to see the storms coming. Kohn, vice chairman of the Fed, says the change is only incremental, as the Fed has asupervisorty role already. Taylor's view is that the Fed does best when its responsibilities are limited to its original role. A change would dilute its main mission of steering the economy and jeopardize its independence.

The continued debate about the relevance of a G-8, the need for more countries. OBama sees the G-20 as the really important meeting, and the G-8 meetings as a smaller less significant meeting between the G20 meeting in London and the next one in Pittsburgh. This however leaves the other leaders outside of the G-8 meeting on the sidelines at G-8 meetings, which does not work very well. In this meeting in Italy, Turkey and Egypt were also present, as were leaders from Africa, and from Australia.
