The Pakistan People's Party of the Bhutto family comes in third. The result of this could be a weaker coalition government. The Supreme Court has banned Sharif for life from holding political office. Pakistan has seen governments toppled and military rule for half of its 70 years since independence. The rivalry with India and the role of the military has affected political institutions and democracy in Pakistan making peace with India difficult to achieve for any elected government.

Annamaria Andriotis does enormous service to millions of borrowers for student loans by putting down in simple payments terms everybody can understand the approach to take for a university education. She points out the pitfalls in taking federal loans and following the advice of the student loan office. The federal student loans have an origination fee of about 4.2%, so even if you pay off the loan early you are stuck with the origination cost, which private lenders such as major banks do not normally charge. On a $100,000 loan this could be $4200 right off the beginning, reducing the loan to $95,800. Private lenders offer fixed rates also at attractive terms of about 4%-4.25%, with added reduction of 0.25 to 0.5% for loans with automatic payment. The lenders include Wells Fargo, Suns Trust. It is important to have good credit ratings. Scores of over 700 or 720 in credit ratings provide the most attractive rates, yet a good credit rating is also acceptable. FICO scores range from 350 to 850 for credit ratings. Added reduction of quarter to half percentage point for automatic payment. A loan for $100,000 taken with Federal PLUS loan and government guarantees could run 7.21% for fixed rate. Andriotis points out that compared to the $4586 payment on a $100,000 student fixed rate private loan at 4.25% for 10 years, a federal guaranteed PLUS loan at fixed rate of 7.21% for 10 years would cost $3541 more over the life of the loan. Mortgage loans for 30 year fixed rate jumbo loan is about 4.14%. In September 2014, the rates for jumbo mortgage loans offered by private banks are now converging at the 4.18% for conventional mortgage loans. For auto loans zero percent financing from auto company lenders such as Toyota Financial are a better option. Rates of 2% on auto loans may be available from private banks and credit unions. SunTrust Banks has an online lending division LightStream that is offering personal loans to borrowers having good credit ratings scores, with interest rates of as low as 1.99%. The borrowers with excellent scores can get the unsecured option at the best rate of 1.99%. Credit unions are offering lower auto loan rates of 2.64% and 2.74% compared to banks charging average of 4.79% and 4.9%, according to data from SNL Financial. Millions of borrowers with good credit ratings, especially for student loans, need to start early in checking out the rates and shopping for the best rate. A good credit rating of parents can enable a student to make a huge difference in payments for undergraduate or postgraduate education, and avoid the unnecessary burden of high interest rate loans in a low interest rate environment....

America is the only nation among developed countries that lacks paid leave. Biden's Families and Workers Plan was designed to make this part of the fabric of American society. The 12 weeks paid leave originally planned is particularly needed for caregivers, mostly women, and is now down to 4 weeks. It was then taken out on the resistance of 1 senator from West Virginia out of 50 Democratic party senators. Women are hard hit during the pandemic and are unable to get back into the work force. Most Republicans if in the shoes of women as caregivers, or mothers needing maternity leave for children, would support this essential feature of a modern or well developed society, yet this is often missing as the nation is divided because about a third of Americans have paid leave and the rest lack paid leave. Did you know that SUV's are the second largest source of emissions after Power. We hear a lot about aviation which is much smaller but little about SUV's in the impact on climate change. SUV's make up about 40% of cars in Britain, and higher in the U.S. at 43%, 40% worldwide an astounding sixfold increase from 32 million to 200 million since 2010. People may even be driving an SUV and talking a lot about climate change.

Any savings from electric cars expected to grow from 2 million to 20 million by 2030  will be offset by more SUV's on the road. This is the view of the International Energy Agency in its recent report. Again all the talk about electric cars as a way to address climate change misses what is really happening in automobiles. Even in China the SUV's make up 42% of sales, and in India 30%. It is more profitable to make SUV's and they are harder to electrify adding 25% to energy consumed compared to cars.

With China's economy contracting China is now reviving the sidewalk trade with hawker stalls, food trucks, and other types of sidewalk retailers. Chinese premier Li Keqiang says small entrepreneurs at the micro level are as important as larger business to keep unemployment low. Li says these small traders are as important "as vital to China as bigger and more high end businesses." He is now promoting these smaller business enterprises and individual business owners saying "we will support you," and praising food stalls for their contributions in the past before China industrialized to "human culinary culture."  Only when the economy took off and large companies emerged were these small businesses forgotten. This reverses the Communist party's instructions to close street vendors. A sanitary health expert Arne Panesar of the German Corporation for International Cooperation says for about six of ten persons in the world there are no sustainable sanitary systems for the waste. It is not enough he says to build toilets, equally important  is how the waste is treated and disposed. Prime minister Modi of India has stated that toilets are more important than temples in India and the goal is set for all Indians to have secure sustainable toilets in 2019.  Panesar says of Dacca, Bangladesh, that for its 16 million only 2% have securely managed sustainable sanitary provisions. Waste that is not treated and correctly disposed off ends up in streams and neighborhoods creating health hazards- diseases like cholera, typhus and polio thriving in such conditions. It is not clear says this report that sanitation needs can be met by even 2030. In India the focus is now not just toilet building but on on safe sanitary provisions to make health a priority, as well as women's education which suffers without adequate toilets. ...

The Economist magazine says Boris Johnson with his booming cheerleader habits is an attractive choice for 124,000 members of the Conservative Party as they contemplate a new leader. Now that the new Brexit Party and Mr. Farage are taking votes from Conservatives and the party polling just 11% ahead of the EU elections, with Brexit Party at 34%, the Conservatives could see his faction of no-deal Brexit as a good choice to lead the Conservatives in the battle with Labour party. Not so hastily it says. Because of three reasons. The EU is not likely to negotiate concessions to Boris Johnson, much the reverse is true. A no deal Brexit would hurt the British economy, and lacks support in parliament. The Scottish people are not represented in the leadership ranks of both parties, so there is a danger of breaking up the UK, as Scots oppose Brexit. Mr. Johnson is also seen as a risky gamble because of the mess Conservatives find themselves in, handing Labour Party under Corbyn a win. Johnson could restore Conservative Party as a campaigning machine and a governing force, even with his bumbling style, yet it could all go wrong. ...

This view from the Guardian by David Adler from July 8 2019, gives a third perspective on Greece as it goes into elections. It looks at the turbulent period of 2015-2019 when a new leader Alexis Tsipras promised to lead Greece out of the eurozone crisis by standing up to the ECB and Germany, instead of looking at Greece's own responsibility in letting debt buildup till it overwhelmed Greece. Adler says Syriza was too much on one end blaming Germany for strict conditions on a loan bailout, and after this did not work embracing the loan program in a complete reversal causing much anguish to his own support base when this led to callous implementation.  Mitsotakis is careful to say in his interview with Reuters that the vulnerable have to be protected while also committing to a path of economic growth for Greece. It says 50 billion euros was provided to help people with the cost of living crisis, pensions were increased, minimum wage increased by 20%. It also shows the need to judge by looking at the situation not by labels of centre left or center right, are people better off, will people be better off in the future, are all the bases education, healthcare, public services, infrastructure covered? The debt ceiling agreement between Biden and McCarthy has made it out of the committee stage and now heads to the House floor. Both Biden and McCarty are confident it will pass quickly before June 5. There are some surprises as the the impact of the debt ceiling agreement is better understood. 78,000 additional people will get food aid costing an additional $2 billion as a result of the tighter work requirements for the food aid program. The program will make it easier for veterans and homeless people to get benefits.  The cuts to the IRS funding by about $21 billion will be used by the Biden adminstration to reduce the effects of other cuts in programs that help people struggling with the cost of living.  On defense spending Biden says "obviously if there is an existential need for additional spending I have no doubt we will be able to get it." Both sides say this agreement is the best that could be done for either side. "With divided government they get to have an opinion, and we get to have an opinion, and all things equal, I think a compromise agreement is reasonable for both sides," says Shalanda Young, Mr. Biden's negotiator and Budget Office Director. Congressional Budget Office estimate is for $1.5 trillion in debt reduction over a decade.   ...
