This interview in DW.com by Stefan Dege with author Sebastian Sons ("Built on Sand: A Problematic Ally"), looks at the changes in Saudi Arabia as a new generation of younger leaders under Prince Salman take over the desert region. A big change is that benefitting women in Saudi Arabia. The driving ban lifted is only one change. The bigger change is in the way educated Saudi women will now be integrated into the labor market.  This means improvements in gender relations can also now take place.  One reason cited here that these top down changes from Prince Salman are more likely to happen affecting Saudi society at the grassroots is that 70% of the Saudi population is under 30 years of age. Many have studied overseas and are educated, seeking a freer and more open life. The younger generation is euphoric says Sons, and they put all their hopes on Prince Salman that he can find a way out of the entrenched societal ways  that limit young people, and women from economic participation.  The Wahhabi clerics are seen as a junior partner to the monarchy in Saudi Arabia, and they too see the economic participation of women as necessary in today's tight economic situation. There is even optimism that Merkel could push for better women's rights, and for a Goethe Insitute for better cultural understanding in Riyadh. The impact of the bank losses will be felt in a process of deleveraging that will exagerate and worsen the credit crunch for years. As banks on the way up in a positive profits cycle can make more money only by leveraging with the leveraging factor may be about 10 times, for an investment bank much higher about 30 times, and on the way down as profits shrink the deleveraging cycle works just as sharply. For every dollar lost as the deleveraging cycle moves into reverse a bank has to contract lending by $10, and for every dollar lost an investment bank has to contract lending by $20-$30 depending on how leveraged it was. A recent study with Anil Kashyap, University of Chicago as one of the authors says the lending contraction frm the mortgage related losses alone would lead to a $1 trillion credit contraction for the USA economy and expects a big shrinking of banks. As all banks contract and some banks go under private equity and hedge funds are likely to take on some of the role of investment banks but they are not regulated so the situation in terms of regulatory oversight would be just as risky as before. Treasury has a list of 100 banks in danger and FDIC has a list of 90 such banks. Merrill Lynch's $48 billion in collateralized debt obligations underwritten in 2007 are almost all on the verge of default or already in default and it will sell off assets like Bloomberg and Black Rock to raise capital....

Some of these investments such as in ports and logistics are needed to make America a manufacturing and exporting nation. Economists loved to talk about crowding out of investment by the private sector when the government spending was significantly higher as during and after World War II. Today there is little talk about the massive misallocation of capital in the US economy. Where public infrastructure is ravaged by time and mismanagement as in New York political trends are calling for free public transport  and supported grocery stores in NYC, when the root cause the overall picture of the Nation's spending in rebuilding America is ignored or unaddressed, which would get to the root cause of the cost of living and quality of life issues that concern all the people of this Nation. ...

Status updates should be done in one on one conversations, or over email. Knowing the objective of a meeting is essential. President Trump says TikTok app would be banned in the U.S. after September 15. He said he had talked to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and told him Microsoft could buy the apps U.S. operations but if it does so a substantial portion of the price must go to the U.S. Treasury because of the approval of the deal the U.S. is giving after the review. He told Nadella "Look it can't be controlled for security reasons by China- too big,too invasive. Traditional options of child care provided by grandparents, family friends are now not acceptable with the required social distancing. THe pound is weakening against the dollar and may hit $1.50 by some estimates, and the cost of making the diesel engines in the UK can't be that much more than manufacture in the USA that it would be economically not possible to bring it here or make it here or in Mexico. Even if it sales in modest numbers wouldn't it show that at 65 mph the Fiesta Econetic shows that Ford has cars the give big mileage in its lineup. And about the popularity of clean diesel who can be sure that things won't change as the Europeans sell these cars here? This maybe Kiley's point that there are risks to Ford by not bringing these cars to the American market.

He did this once before during Covid, this time it will be seen throughout Europe and comes as the European Union is struggling to establish its own identity.

This WSJ report takes a look at Bucha, a town 55 kilimetres from Kviv, that saw some of the worst fighting of the war. Civilians were caught in the crossfire and after the initial Russian assault was pushed back, Russia occupied the town with another assault before being pushed out. This report in WSJ says Russian soldiers were initially polite and helped residents. As their casualites grew, and as Ukraine's territorial defense forces took up the fight in Bucha the dividing line between who is defending the town and local residents started to disappear.  This is when the the civilian casualties mounted and when Russian soldiers who had intially even said they did not know why they were here and why there was a war began to see territorial defense forces in all civilians leading to the immense destruction in Bucha.

A US Senate Committee bipartisan investigation will look into MPT, Medical Properties Trust, a large hospital landlord, and the private equity dealings in hospitals, says this report in WSJ. This WSJ report by Melanie Evans and Jonathan Weil looks into Steward, a for profit company that was created by Cerberus Capital Management in 2010 when it bought a chain of struggling non profit Catholic hospitals in Boston. For the Carney hospital in Massachusetts Steward paid $12.5 million and MPT put in $263 million in 2018 to buy the Carney hospital buildings which it then rented back to Carney, according to this WSJ report. Steward now owns 31 hospitals in 8 states including 8 in Florida some of which are shown here in a deep cash crunch. The state of Massachusetts has now sent nine monitors to each of the hospitals in Massachusetts.

Rupert Murdoch brought positive changes as shown here to introduce electronic printing technologies to the newspaper business in 1981 the year Reagan became president. Yet there are questions why others across the news operations did not take this up as it would make sense to adopt new technologies. Why was there no competition? The Senate passed the Kids Online Safety Act 91-3. It is now upto the House and Speaker Johnson to pass it quickly. Safeguards are already in place for communities. It is an appalling and dangerous sign of the reckless behaviour of tech companies in this social media space, the tech company lobbying conducted here. Ordinary Americans need protection, children in America need protection from the unacceptable risks to mental health in the social media space. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has called for a warning label similar to the one on cigarette boxes to be placed on social media outlets. Senator Blumenthal and Senator Blackburn from northeast and southern states have come together on this issue to protect the Nation's children. It is now upto the House to take action in 2024 to protect the Nation and its children.

They says that these manufacturers suppress unfavorable research and distort public discourse. Former EPA researcher Dourson is shown here with a company that gets half its funding from chemical companies. He pushes for allowing many times the permissible level of carcinogens set by the EPA, and supports use of forever chemicals, in this report in the WSJ. President Trump appointed him head of the chemcial safety unit at EPA, but Doursen withdrew when there was bipartisan criticism of ties to industry. Critics say he uses biased science that looks at cherry picked data. His company is called Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment, which he founded after taking a buyout of $25,000 from EPA, according to WSJ.

Around Nalanda University are the other places of the Buddha- Kushinagar where the Buddha spent his last years, and Bodh Gaya where he attained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in the 5th century BC. From here by the 5th century AD Buddhism spread to China, Korea, Vietnam and Japan, through Bodhidharma Indian prince who brought Buddhism to China.

As the US central bank, the Fed, considers cutting high interest rates that affect housing costs and mortgages this WSJ report looks at the consumer debt in September 2024. It says consumer debt is at $17 trillion in 2024. This is high except that when inflation adjusted it is only 3% above the consumer debt in 2019, the peak happened in 2008 before the banking induced financial crisis. Then there is the question of what the debt composition is. Here overall debt has grown by 4% yet credit card debt is up 11%, not a good sign when the interest rates charged by banks is 12%, by cards 22%. Households are paying off credit card debt by borrowing from sources with lower interest costs.

This is more evidence why many households are hurting as debt servicing remains as and additional cost of living issue for Americans.
