Putin's personal animosity stemming perhaps from Sashkavili's tendency (see links to Sashkavili) to speak his mind and be blunt and personal conversations between the two that may have inflamed the situation and unknown to the world outside, may have played a larger role in this conflict than is fully understood. And falling into the whole backdrop of Russian retreat after the fall of the Soviet Union and hurt feelings which are described by Gorbachev (seee link to Gorbachev) this has become mixed up to such an extent that its hard to separate the two and know where one ends and the other begins. So it certainly makes any hasty judgements of Russia's intentions when Russia itself is sorting out what happened and trying to figure out whats really important hurt feelings since the 1990's, the past, or European integration, the future. Medvedev's quieter stance may play a bigger part as things settle down and Europe forges its own efforts at economic integration of Russia.

Ford has lagged behind other car manufacturers in entering markets in India and China. Ford now plans to increase investments in India. Ford gets 3% of its total sales from India, compared to 10% for Brazil. The goal is to generate one third of its sales from Asia and Africa. As part of this effort Ford plans to build 2 new plants in India. The two plants will be built in Sanand, Gujarat, by 2014, employing 5,000 and with a capacity of 240,000 cars and 270,000 engines. Ford's existing plant is in the south, in Tamil Nadu, with 5000 workers in manufacturing, and 5000 other office employees. Ford cited advantages of Gujarat being the port facilities for exporting cars and the pro-business climate in Gujarat. Toyota which was also slow to enter the Indian market, plans to invest $220 million to double production capacity to 310,000 by 2013.

Nickel cadmium batteries - this year 2008 the European Union is banning the sale of all nickel cadmium batteries. Question is why is the US not banning them. And why are companies like Energizer, Duracell, P&G, Mattel, Toys R Us and Walmart still buying them? Why is Panasonic making them? A toy costs $1.50 less to make using nickel cadmium batteries. Are parents aware of what it does to workers making them? Are plants safe in developing countries especially in corruption prone coercive environments like the one in factories in China? Some of the owners of such factories are in Hong Kong, Hong Kong based companies, are they aware enough of the risks and the ethics of doing is? This story is of an engineer who was exposed to factory conditions in a company GP that was supposed to be a good company to work for, and few knew about the effects of cadmium in the year 1995 when she joined. The Panasonic factory is in Wuxi which is not in some remote part of China. And note this about 10% of China's arable land is contaminated with heavy metals such as cadmium according to China's own State Environmental Protection Agency, and the metals are entering China's food supply. 12 studies have shown unsafe level of cadmium in fruits and vegetables. Is this a necessary price of industrialization or is it possible to find a way thats better- a challenge for countries like India. Can there be better protection of workers and still have industrialization? Wouldn't it make sense that a motivated well treated work force will perform better in better working conditions. Aren't there costs involved for workers and owners of such plants. Owners also bear costs, bad press, medical payments, workers leave and good workers are hard to find in the wave of bad publicity and health risks, customers in the west refuse to buy the product, the company's brand name is tarnished forever, as would happen for GP in this case. The coercive patterns of using police to suppress publicity for a Hong Kong Company shows owners in Hong Kong have the same disregard for worker rights, even when living in an area that one hears talk about democratic rights. This Editorial by the Editorial Board of the WSJ says Obama, and Biden are covered by the same immunity that protects DJT under the Supreme COurt decision 6-3 that SC Justice Gorsuch called "a decision for the ages." It says DJT is understandably furious about the rabbit hole of the Steele dossier on collusion.  What started DJT comments on Obama was the publication by WSJ of a story on Mr. Epstein. All this plays into the partisan politics which is getting the nation nowhere when under Biden and now under DJT there is a singular focus in different ways and with different perceptions of need, to rebuild the Nation's industrial base and the living standards of the workers and people of America. Much of it frittered away under the negligent administrations of Republican and Democratic administrations of Obama and Bush with engagement in remote Afghanistan and Iraq foreign wars started under Reagan and the elder Bush during the Cold War, with its spinoff into migration issues that hurt social cohesion in the US and Europe. ...

This report in DW.com says Donbas, the eastern region of Ukraine with fierce fighting, was sparsely populated till the mid 19th century. It was only after industrialization that Donbas began to develop with its large coal reserves. During this period the public use of Ukrainian was suppressed in the Russian Empire, and Russian established as the language of education says Hausman from the Leibniz Institute. After the Russian Civil War it was made part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. During this Soviet period more and more Russian came to Donbas. People in Donbas always spoke Ukrainian and had ties to both Russia and Ukraine. Up to 2014 it was an important industrial region of Ukraine. After 2014 it has suffered considerably from the mines, and fighting in the separatist areas wanting to join Russia leaving it derelict and in a very poor state says DW.com. Between 2014 and 2022 Russian supported separatists fought the Ukraine army till a ceasefire was arranged with the Minsk Agreements. It is this disputed region that Russia is fighting for after the failure to take the capital Kviv which is closer to the Polish border in western Ukraine. Closest to Poland is the city of Lviv. ...

Pulling it all together was Lisa Temnikov, a 11 year old daughter of two taxi drivers from Krasnodar in the Sochi region, who won the part in a casting call. She played Lyubov, which means love, and led the journey across centuries of Russia's past with domes of St. Basil's Cathedral seen in the background. As much a celebration of Russia's past as a break from decades of stifling of individuality under communism.

The U.S. director of national intelligence has pointed to the Russian government as the source of hacking into U.S. databases. U.S. intelligence officials say this is intended to interfere with the U.S. election process in some way. It follows hacking into the DNC database of the Democratic Party.

Why polluting industries and colluding local government officials who are judged on the rate of economic growth achieved have come together and become entrenched to thepoint where its hard for the central government to implement pollution control measures. Deng's response to a sluggish socialist bureaucracy was to give power to local government officals to promote growth and to be judged on that basis. The environmental ministry and the environmental protection departments are very small and lack the resources to control these industries. And NGO's and the informed public and citizens are powerless to demand change as they are seen by the government as risking social stability by risking growth. After the East Asian crisis China anticipating a slowing down in competition with recovering Asian economies pushed harder for more economic growth. As a result production of steel set new records and the addition of power generating capacity each year surpassed the total power generation of countries like Britain and France.But this power generation does not use the modern technology available as it is costlier and takes longer to build. So a lot of short run decisions are being made in the interests of growth. An effort to introduce Green GDP backed by President Hu Jintao was dropped after it ran into a lot of resistance. Using this about 3 points of GDP were deducted from the 10% growth as environmental cost. This was based on modest environmental costs estimates and did not take into account the entire cost of pollution to health and the environment. China's own environmental experts think that Western estimates of environmental costs are if anything on the conservative side as they are based on models used in the west and conditions in China have little precedent in the scale and range of environmental degradation. Coal is burned to produce two thirds of the energy and uses older technology for power generation, it is a big polluter of the environment. And the modest energy efficiency goals set by the central government are not being met as a result China is already expected to be consuming as much energy in 2010 as it was expected by its own planners to be consuming in 2020. To informed outsiders it appears that the polutting process is systemic in its nature and only political change that allows people who are suffering the worst effects of this pollution to make their voice heard, can lead to reversing the trends that have been set in place from the Deng period of economic change that started in the 80's. ...

Property sales are estimated to fall by 28-33% in China, twice as earlier forecast by S&P Global Ratings. This is a steep decline that will affect the Chinese economy so dependent on construction. This week there were reports of property buyers in 100 cities getting together to withhold payments on unfinished apartments. Property developers depend on these payments as they have severe liquidity problems and need cash for operations.
