The US needs 100,000 jobs a month just to keep up with population growth. And 7.2 million jobs have been lost since December 2007. Where will the new jobs come from to replace lost jobs in retail, banking auto and other job losing sectors and when, and will some jobs never come back. Global Insight forecast show 8.1% unemployment in 2013, suggesting that jobs needed for population growth and some jobs from the pool of job losses will not be recovered for some years.

The Public Private Investment Program announced by Treasury Secretary Geithner finally gets underway in October 2009. Black Rock, a group led by the Wellington Company and a group led by Alliance Bernstein are private participants in the effort to get private participation to rid banks of bad loan assets. Five of nine money management firms selected by Treasury to buy toxic mortgage related securities have raised the minimum of $500 million from investors each, to qualify for matching government loans. In total the program will allow money management firms to buy up $12 billion in bad assets. THe IMF estimated last week that financial institutions around the world have still on their books $2.8 trillion in troubled mortgages and securities. Only half of that amount has been booked in losses, which leaves $1.4 trillion still to be resolved. $12 billion is less than 1% of this, which begs the question how will this make a difference? Treasury only hopes that this will restart trading in bad assets and help establish market prices for these assets. If unemployment worsens and the economy sees a sudden relapse in the near future this $1.4 trillion in bad assets will continue to create serious problems for financial instituions and the international financial system....

Henry Ford, Eleanor Roosevelt and H.G. Wells slept on Simmons mattresses. Eleanor praised the virte of the Beautyrest brand. THe company is 133 years old starting in a small city in Wisconsin. The company has since 1991 been sold and resold to leveraged buyout firms and private equity firms and debt which was $164 million is now $1.3 billion. The recession has destroyed any chances of serious recovery and the debt has made the company's prospects dim and uncertain. THe employees have been devastated and risk losing more jobs. Along the way $750 million were made by the various private equity owners. Julie Creswell says that in many ways this mimicks the subprime mortgage boom. With easy money from banks, endowments and pension funds, private equity firms were using this money with little of their own to flip companies with reliable cash flows after taking on extra debt, at higher and higher prices. Question this raises is what sort of activity is best as a society for America, innovation, new products and building companies by investing in human capital, technology and research or risky investments, and Simmons type investing? New proposals from the President tend to go back from his promise of tranparency . Its the administration that will decide under this proposal what constitutes anational security leak. A clear federal standard would let ajudge decide whether national security was affected. In reality the argument goes the other way becauseit hurts the public's right to know, and it does this to avoid embarrassment. Some in the administration want to take this route and President Obama s willing to go back on tranparency pledges he made. A good media shield law that is aclear federal standard in addition to state shield laws would trust the judiciary to decide, now Obama is going back on his pledge for anew era of openness especially when two wars are being fought and there is a global economic crisis.

See the piece by Paul Pillar because it says something at the heart of the problem- one of the biggest paradoxes in the rationale for the counterinsurgency. And it is this: the Pakistan government you are trying to help is assisting the forces that threaten it. At the heart of this paradox is the fact that the Pakistan government, military and intelligence services are not all acting together and there are clandestine and some open elements in each of these institutions that support the Taliban. And the official elelments also are hedging their bets and are willing to make adeal with the Taliban if necessary.

He details the activities of lobbyists working with the Obama adminsitraion. President Obama risks losing his opportunity for change and with it his credibility as a change advocate. A series of Washington Post articles have detailed the activities of lobbyists in high places that threaten to gut most of the President's reform proposals. Rich points out that it is not clear whether the ostentatious daily activities at a meeting place the Ristorante Tosca is abad omen for the lobbyists or also for the Obama adminsitration or for both. Peter Galbraith explaining the true reason for his firing by Eide and the UN Secretary General Moon. The statement announcing his dismissal to be accurate would have said that this was over differences whether the UN was going to remain silent over evidence of electoral fraud in the Afghan elections, and the issue of ghost polling stations. There is another angle of this which risks endangering the US trrops in the north of the country. Karzai's opponent in the elction is half Tajik and half Pashtun, fraud in the elections may turn the Tajik north against US and coaltion troops, further complicating life for the US, and this is on top of the loss of credibility with the Afghan people of the Karzai government. See the separate article on General Jones telling McChrystal who commands US forces in Afghnistan to cooperate with the strategic review now underway, by not making statements to the press. The other questions arise about the manner in which this dismissal ocurred. A few days before this Hillary Clinton, Eide, and other representatives from the coalition told the press that they think Karzai would win. Had Obama authorized this and what would be the point of such a statement, and at the same time trying to conduct an unbiased assessment of the war in Afghanistan. Here Galbraith comes across as one who had the courage to decide according to what he believed would be right for America and the values it represents. His point is that he could not tolerate the last act of dishonesty in the dispute that went on for months, because of the loss of credibility for the UN itself among the many Afghans who do not support Karzai. This would destroy also the credibility of the US in the country. Can any number of troops make up for this? Wars in Asia have proven that popular support decides the eventual fate of the mission. Only by standing up for its values can the US not undermine the very principles that the troops are fighting for and the people support. ...
