The concerns over far right parties expelling immigrants in states such as Thuringia has caused a wave of protests across Germany including Berlin and other cities in January 2024. It is also impacting the East where anti immigrant sentiment is based. Germany has a shortage of workers in parts of Germany that formed the Federal Republic before reunification- immigrants fill these gaps. The East has not been the success story it was supposed to be because reunification of the Federal Republic and the GDR (Communist East Germany around Leipzig and East Berlin) led to a flight of young people to the western parts for jobs and opportunities. Leading to a mostly older and retired population in the east -leaving it struggling and feeling unwanted. This is the background of the anti immigrant sentiment in the east where there are far fewer immigrants than in the western and central regions. Resentment about being ignored as settled around the immigrant issue in the east even as Germany has benefitted through some of the middle class educated immigrants from Turkey and from Ukraine, and Syria. Similar resentment has taken place in parts of England in the north which led to fear of immigrants being used by Tories party leading to Brexit. In a similar way in France in the north, and in the US with neglect of rural areas and factory communities in the east and midwest. The communities that were left out that have made choices with far right as in Britain have ended up with leaders from immigrant families that have accomplished little or much in the reverse direction for the English people in the north. The leaders of Germany, Britain, the US, the Nordic countries such as Denmark, and gradually in France have learned that it is right to go back to their roots, that they had forgotten where they came from and are now fighting for the dignity of workers (Schulz), standing in picket lines for the autoworkers (Biden), and following the Biden example in the UK (Starmer). With it comes the realization that this started with the Thatcher and Reagan era that created the conditions and culture that were repeatedly embraced by Democrats in the US, Labor in Britain and Social Democrats in Germany alike leading to financial crises and levels of inequality and lack of educational opportunity not seen since the Great Depression. With it by 2024 comes the unwinding of the economics and culture of the Reagan era. Even in China and India the shift is away from that culture as the economies of these countries with half of humanity are shifted to serve a broad base and to include rural, agricultural and other parts of the population. It shows that the educated parts of the population in these countries have the ability to create the conditions that in Lincoln's words are for the people, by the people, of the people, for a brighter future, if only they will try hard enough for their children's and grand children's sake.  ...

How the travel limits imposed by coronavirus have reduced automobile and airline travel leading to drastic reduction in polluting gases in the atmosphere. In New York about a 50% reduction in carbon monoxide. Both China, Northern Italy show large reductions in nitrogen dioxide in the atmosphere. This gas is related to automobiles and industrial activity. Pictures taken from satellites show the map of the areas around big cities in China- Shanghai and Beijing- mostly clear compared to before the coronavirus hit the country.

Remote work and transfer to other locations from San Francisco area mean salary changes of 10-20% for tech workers in Silicon Valley. Most tech workers in companies such as Google are now working remotely. This is leading to companies making plans for a future work force with decentralized staffs in many less costly locations. This should also reduce the pressure on living costs and the quality of life in northern California cities. The cost of living in other cities in the U.S. is 10-25% lower than that in San Francisco, Seattle or New York. Tech companies are following a policy of setting the wage based on location and local costs for housing and other costs.

Massachusetts is moving into no. 3 or no. 4 position after New York and New Jersey and possibly Michigan in coronavirus cases with 34,000 reported. More than 3700 were hospitalized  in the state.

Massachusetts is close to hotspot New York. It also has a more aggressive testing strategy and is hiring hundreds of volunteers to do contract tracing, and uses Partners in Health, a nonprofit. Michigan and Massachusetts have followed a more aggressive strategy of testing compared to California which has taken a different approach of not doing aggressive testing and contact tracing leading to lower numbers in California now adjusted for population that could be different later on.

With about half the schools in the U.S. closed and entirely closed in other countries, kids are also at home. Traditional options of child care provided by grandparents, family friends are now not acceptable with the required social distancing. Years of failure of politicians in Congress in Brazil, and poor decisions in running the government by the Worker's Party by overspending leaving little money for services, sanitation, health and other priorities, leads to Brazil turning to a former army officer in the 2018 elections. Corruption charges with collusion of politicians and the state owned oil company on contracts known as the Car Wash scandal further damaged the reputation of politicians in the Worker's Party. Jair Bolsonaro was elected to Brazil's Congress in 1990 after a short period in the military at a time when democratic institutions were being restored in Brazil following decades of military dictatorship. By 2014 after two terms in office the Worker's Party led by a former automobile plant worker Da Silva had lost popular support with overspending, failure to upgrade public services and neglect of basic infrastructure such as sanitation, leading to widespread protests. In the 2014 congressional elections Bolsonaro won by nearly 500,000 votes, leading to his bid to run for president from a small party which had the support of Brazil's military. The military played a role in supporting the Getulio Vargas administration from 1930-1945, which pushed industrialization in Brazil and set minimum wage, workers rights. Democracy was restored by 1945 after Brazil sided with the U.S. in the war. In 1964 the administration of Joao Goulart was overthrown in a military coup after popular discontent and protests. Democracy was restored in 1985 with centrist parties playing apart till the election of the Worker's Party under Ignacio Lula in 2008. Six years into his administration by 2014 issues of overspending and poor management of public services led to loss of popular support for the Workers Party as the public looked for alternatives to combat crime, improve public services and address problems of lack of spending on sanitation, public services, health care. The collapse of the commodities pricing boom led to higher unemployment and a shrinking economy leading to unrest and public protests.  ...

This deal by Leon is referred to by the minister for planning and international cooperation of the Morsi government in his op-ed in the NYT on August 16, 2013, and was an effort by the international community to bring a peaceful resolution of the problem leading to new elections.

Annalena Baerbock, 44 years, of the Greens is Germany's nominee for president of UN General Assembly in 2025. She was nominated by chancellor Scholz. As a leader of the Greens and in the coalition government of chancellor Scholz she has tried to show that Germany is a modernizing nation and innovative more than is seen in its political class. As one of the youngest politicians she has presented Germany in a new way as a young face for Europe. DW.com shows the evolution of the Greens as a party since the 1980's. Baerbock joined the Greens at age 25, four years later in 2010 she was head of the Brandenburg state section of the party, becoming a board member of the European Green party. She is still only 44 years old. She studied public law and political science in Hamburg, and gained a Masters degree in international law at the London School of Economics, one of Germany's first leading politicians to study in Britain. She started studies for a Doctorate at the Free University of Berlin, which she left in 2013 as she was elected to the Bundestag. By 2021 Annalena Baerbock was with Robert Habeck co-leader of the party heading into the general election. At one point the Greens were polling 5 months before the 2021 election at 27% with Annalena Baerbock running for chancellor against Armin Laschet of CDU and ahead of the CDU by 3 points in Sonntag poll. The Greens came in at 15% of the vote in 2021 dropping slightly to 12% in 2025. This time the Greens will sit in the parliamentary opposition headed by Robert Habeck. ...

Everything you might want to know about coffee, where it comes from, how cultivation is changing with climate change and higher temperatures, and the effort to map the coffee genome. With higher temperatures the farming of coffee moves to higher altitudes in coffee growing countries in the tropics, but it is easier to cross breed the 124 varieties to produce a plant that can withstand the change in temperatures and one that can resist fungus.  A coffee fungus and higher altitude rains destroyed much of the crop in Central America including Guatemala. This led to increased migration to Mexico and U.S. of farmers leading up to Mr. Trump's plan to have the National Guard of Mexico police Mexico's border with Guatemala.  Coffee is a sensitive plant and needs cooler weather and water which is found more in the tropics. Growing it in California or in Italy makes it very costly leading to Frinj coffee being sold in California at $16 a cup. Climate change could reduce the area where coffee can be grown by about 50% in the tropical countries from South east Asia to African countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia, and in south America Colombia and Brazil, says Climate Institute, Washington DC based climate change experts.   ...

Bhutan is a small mountain kingdom in north eastern India, bordering Tibet. Historically close ties with Tibet continued after China's takeover of Tibet following the coming to power of China's Communist Party in 1949. This led to a friendship treaty with India in 1949. A narrow piece of terrritory with 34 square kilometres is part of the dispute between China and India. India opposed the move to build Chinese roads in the area leading to a standoff that is now over 50 days. This territory is significant because it connects India's central plains to the northeastern states. Bhutan opposes the Chinese road work but tries to maintain friendly relations with China. The close relationship between India and Bhutan is part of the situation that emerged after China's takeover of Tibet. The Royal Bhutan Army's salaries are paid by India, road construction is done by India, and subsidies for food and kerosene were provided by India. A parliamentary democracy with a monarch was established in Bhutan under king Jigme Wangchuk, and elections were held in 2008, 2013. This has led to more openness towards China, leading to concern in India.  Bhutan is a popular destination for Chinese tourists who pay $250 for a visa. Indians do not need a visa. ...

At the G-7 meetings in Alberta, Canada DJT said the 2014 exclusion of Russian president Vladimir Putin, from the G8 after Moscow's unilateral annexation of Crimea, was a serious mistake leading to the war in Ukraine. In another sign of how the capital allocation system is failing America and how capital markets are malfunctioning, this report in WSJ shows how capital of $346 billion in 2021, much of it needed for vital investments in renovating crumbling US infrastructure, in chips and science, in education, is being wasted. Vital needs are being ignored in America in education when only one thirds of eight graders are passing NAEP test reading comprehension in the US. No one talks about it yet it is a fact that cannot be ignored. Yet underinvestment in education, health, infrastructure and public services happens as wasteful investment takes place as hundreds of billions of capital is diverted into ventures that have little meaning. Shown here is a robotic pizza maker that is going out of business. The Internal Rate of Return for venture firms was negative 7% in the third quarter of 2022. As president Biden said in The State of the Union this year "free markets without competition is not capitalism it is extortion." There is no competition in the planned misallocation of this type that fails common sense,  American families and children,  as well as financial rates of return. ...

Alibaba, the internet commerce company in China, will split into 6 independently run companies. This reorganization comes as the company had grown too large and become a competing center for financial direction for China rivalling the government. Jack Ma was critical of financial regulation in China leading to a period in which the internet company founder was seen as providing a different direction for the Chinese economy from that of Xi Jinping. As China cracked down on some of the problems from lack of regulation of the economy, pollution of the environment,  worsening of climate change, and wide disparities in wealth in the country, Jack Ma was becoming increasing at odds with the new trend for better distribution of wealth, and attention to problems of neglected regions, tackling problems of corruption that had developed in the boom period of the economy.

This WSJ report takes a look at Bucha, a town 55 kilimetres from Kviv, that saw some of the worst fighting of the war. Civilians were caught in the crossfire and after the initial Russian assault was pushed back, Russia occupied the town with another assault before being pushed out. This report in WSJ says Russian soldiers were initially polite and helped residents. As their casualites grew, and as Ukraine's territorial defense forces took up the fight in Bucha the dividing line between who is defending the town and local residents started to disappear.  This is when the the civilian casualties mounted and when Russian soldiers who had intially even said they did not know why they were here and why there was a war began to see territorial defense forces in all civilians leading to the immense destruction in Bucha.

Before independence this region around Madras now Chennai was called the Madras Presidency, just as the region around Bombay and Ahmedabad was called the Bombay Presidency. The caste system prevailed in Madras Presidency and led to the upper castes embracing western education and joining the local civil service and after independence the IAS in large numbers.

Enlargement of the prostate is a condition that affects many men as they age. The diagnosis of this condition for Britain's King Charles III gives an opportunity to explain to people what this condition is and how men can manage it proactively with lifestyle changes and modern medicine. The prostate is a walnut size gland which sits below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, a tube that empties urine from the bladder and carries sperm out of the body. It affects as many as half of all men starting in their 50's. When the prostate enlarges it compresses on the urethra, leading to making it more difficult to urinate or ejaculate. The enlargement says an expert at John Hopkins is a result of less cell death and more cell proliferation, two processes that cause prostate growth in size.
