Ford has lagged behind other car manufacturers in entering markets in India and China. Ford now plans to increase investments in India. Ford gets 3% of its total sales from India, compared to 10% for Brazil. The goal is to generate one third of its sales from Asia and Africa. As part of this effort Ford plans to build 2 new plants in India. The two plants will be built in Sanand, Gujarat, by 2014, employing 5,000 and with a capacity of 240,000 cars and 270,000 engines. Ford's existing plant is in the south, in Tamil Nadu, with 5000 workers in manufacturing, and 5000 other office employees. Ford cited advantages of Gujarat being the port facilities for exporting cars and the pro-business climate in Gujarat. Toyota which was also slow to enter the Indian market, plans to invest $220 million to double production capacity to 310,000 by 2013.

Airbus boosts production of its widebody A350 jets from six to nine a month by 2025. The smaller 330neo will go from three to four a month. Both Airbus and Boeing have difficulties increasing production with an overstretched supply chain. Both airplane makers have late deliveries to customers. Boing is having problems increasing production of the 787 with the goal of making five a month shifted to the end of the year. The 777X aircraft the biggest to order is years behind in its development schedule.

Germany's goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2045 will be achieved by the city of Freiburg in 2038. Freiburg's new city hall has 800 solar panels on the facade and the new soccer stadium has a solar installation on the stadium roof.  Green Party and Economy minister Habeck's motto is "Ready- because you are," well suited to Freiburg. Baden-Wurttemberg's requirement for all commercial buildings to be fitted with solar panels could soon be a requirement in Germany.

The James Webb Space telescope reaches its final destination on Jan. 24, 2022 at Lagrange Point 2 or L2 on the other side of the moon, one million miles from earth. In an amazing feat of science one side of the telescope the instrument side will be cloaked in frigid darkness, and the other will defect temperatures of 230 degrees centigrade facing the sun. This keeps the telescope's sensors cool so that stray heat does not interfere with its infrared scans of ancient galaxies and planets orbiting other stars.

France's Thomas Piketty concentrated on inequality and arrives at no solutions or relief, just a historical summary that is also intuitively seen. The pandemic, climate change's impact on agriculture and livable planet, the Ukraine war have raised three questions right before our eyes that are broader and cover more and deeper ground.  The pandemic showed that the dependence on manufacturing in remote locations was a serious error. Climate change showed that agriculture the ability to feed the world itself was affected by this dependence on remote location manufacturing.  Much of this manufacturing was shipped out to China, Europe and the US lost their manufacturing base and with the communities spread out  across the US and EU lost factories and work. Manufacturing was not just shipped out to China, the process was concentrated in a short span of time leading to destruction of the environment on an unprecedented scale in China and the world  by burning lots of coal and fossil fuels. The Russian invasion of Ukraine showed the failure of this arrangement  and exposed its cracks  for Europe, US, and the free world in Asia and Latin America. The shipping out of manufacturing in this way not only destroyed communities and jobs in manufacturing in the US and the EU, but also led to such a broad accumulation of  dollar reserves in Russia and China, that enabled the invasion of neighboring countries in Europe without serious consequences to their economies, the invasion of Ukraine and the threatened takeover of Taiwan. By tackling these issues and building a supply chain concentrated more at home and in the free world better manufacturing jobs will be created in Europe and the US and in the nations of the free world that mitigate and reduce all the effects of inequality that Piketty and others talk about. The newer factories built in advanced nations of the EU and the US and set up in the free world in Asia and other countries, will be built with climate change in mind and make the shift away from coal and fossil fuels, and for conservation plus efficiency in use of energy at every step in the newly built supply chain. The results will be good for all countries in the world including the US, EU, China and India, as climate change can be aggressively tackled in this way with the latest technology and trillions of dollar of capital investments for the benefit of all. ...

A BP led consortium won the right to develop the giant Rumaila oil field. Efforts for seven other oil and gas fields did not result in striking deals with oil companies. The Iraqi government set aggressive pricing for 20 year technical service contracts in which companies were paid fees for boosting output, and set this at $2 abarrel. The sole award for the Rumaila field can boost Iraqi oil output from the current 2.4 million barrels a day to more than 4 million barrels aday which is the Iraqi oil ministry's goal. The BP led group includes the China Petroleum Company. It bid $3.99 but finally accepted the $2.00 a barrel payment.

It brings a sort of self-discipline at a crucial time for the Adani enterprises in coal, renewable energy, ports and logistics. By taking note of the criticisms where Adani enterprises can benefit from scaling down the level of debt it puts the company in a better situation for the future. After two decades of breakneck expansion it provides the kind of pause needed to rationalize the entire business operation and put it on a stronger basis. As Iyer points out the Adani and Ambani story in ports logistics and telecom show a delivery of results that few other companies were willing to do. It is this kind of endeavor that made it possible for China to build a large economy over two decades. This also requires companies to take stock of the situation and impose self discipline and the measure of their future success depends on how they meet situations such as these where they are being tested and weak areas that need attention become apparent. ...

The Paris climate change agreement involved 195 countries. Agreed to on December 12, 2015 it was seen as a major step forward to limit global warming to 2 degrees celsius or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Progress has been slow in taking action since then. Because of covid 19 the Glasgow conference was cancelled. Hope stems from the goals set for carbon neutral economy of Japan, the EU, UK, China, and the U.S. as it enters the agreement after withdrawing.  Much will depend on action taken as the pandemic has pushed economic goals of recovery to the forefront. As India has shown in renewable energy, particularly in solar energy targets and bold vision, there is a lot that can be done by each country acting on its own without the hype of the agreement. India now sees huge opportunities in solar energy because it is cheaper and pollutes less than coal. This is a game changer that comes from investing in new technologies and taking advantage of India's abundant access to sunny weather and the lower labor and other costs. ...

A supply chain crisis, shortages of coal and oil are affecting major world economies. The Guardian looks at the economies of Britain, the US, Germany, Russia and Australia. Inflation is above 4% in Germany for the last month. Shortages of workers is affecting most economies. Ports are filled with container ships that have not downloaded their shipments because of a lack of workers. There were a record 10 million job openings in the US mostly in the restaurant and entertainment industries. Low wages have led many to reconsider their careers during the pandemic, a phenomenon called the Great Resignation. Other people have dropped out of the workforce because schools have not reopened and there is a lack of good affordable childcare. The chairman of the US central bank Jerome Powell, says "It is frustrating to acknowledge that people getting vaccinated and getting Delta variant under control remains the most important economic policy we have. It is also frustrating to se the bottlenecks and supply chain problems not getting better- in fact at the margin getting a bit worse." ...

Keith Bradsher describes the life of one family of migrant workers in China struggling to get their ony daughter through college. Wu Yiebing is a worker in coal mining and his wife Cao works on farms nearby. He has managed to send his daughter Wu Caoying to college. She is a sophomore in college but fears for the future because of the lack of opportunities for new college graduates in China. She also feels the heavy burden as the parents spend half their income to get her through college and have no retirement savings. This is typical of many migrant families in China who see education as the only way for the next generation to have better lives than their parents.

New cases per day in U.S. drop to 35,000 and in India to 55,000 for August 17, 2020. India increased testing to 900,000 per day. Most of these tests are RtP PCR tests with some antigen tests. Coral Davenport of the NYT provides some of the basics of the Paris climate change agreement. This includes an effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions by half to avoid a situation in which atmospheric temperatures rise by 2 degrees Celsius or 3.6 degree Fahrenheit.  The earlier effort to negotiate an accord failed in 2009 in Copenhagen. This time all 186 countries were asked to signup with the USA and China, the No. 1 and No. 2 polluters and India leading the way. Germany is well on its way to self sufficiency through development of solar and wind energy with the German government leading the way, and France leads in the use of nuclear energy. How did this happen now? As Davenport points out there are scientific studies. But this is not the primary reason China is shifting.Davenport fails to emphasize the health concerns and pollution concerns that motivated China to shift away from coal. China's industrial revolution of the last 3 decades has come at a huge cost in pollution of air and water, and president Xi Jinping has decided to make the shift away from coal a top priority. It is estimated that mortality rates for areas of high coal use north of the Yangzte river have higher mortality rates than areas of lower use of coal south of the Yangzte river. The other big polluter India is shifting because it is learning from China's experience. Davenport mentions the resistance to the scientific evidence in the Republican party. As a result it is already clear that it lacks support in Congress and under a future Republican administration. In a fashion similar to healthcare, president Obama failed to create a consensus before proceeding in the hope that this would be better than waiting. However American industry is already moving away from coal as documented in Links- "The Trump executive order on coal and the continuing shift to natural gas." Utilities in the U.S. are making the shift away from coal because of the economics and planning ahead as governments can change every four years. ...

The result is that Lapid's party is putting together a coalition of the right, left and centre- parties of Bennett, Labor, Gantz, and Lapid getting together to form a new government with sharing of ministries. Bennett would be the prime minister for 2 years followed by Lapid under this new arrangement. The whole arrangement is a result of no one  party or group of parties gaining a majority in repeated elections. Under the last arrangement Benny Gantz and Netanyahu shared power with Netanyahu going first as prime minister.  The new arrangement is designed as an effort to give Israel a chance to have anyone other than Netanyahu as prime minister, so intense is the desire for changes- almost as if Israel needed it "as it needs air to breathe," the way Lapid puts it.
