The Labor Department reports 321,000 seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment jobs were added in November 2014. The unemployment rate in the U.S. now is at 5.8%. Average hourly earnings showed an increase of 0.4% over the prior month, and up 2.1% from the prior year. At the same time not much improvement is seen in parttime workers looking for full time work with 6.9 million in part time work. About 2.8 million people were out of work for more than 6 months, 30.7% of the unemployed workers, in Nov. 2014.

U.S. CFTC head Gensler favored a rule that would require asset managers like Vanguard and Pimco to contact at least five banks when looking for a price on a derivatives contract. The idea was to foster competition among the banks. Gensler failed to get the third vote from Democratic commissioner Wetjen on this requirement and settled for a requirement to contact at least two banks. The new rules for derivative contracts are being set to meet the rule making requirements set by the Dodd-Frank legislation in the U.S.

Unitech, DLF, and other builders in India, are switching to affordable housing to meet demand at lower prices of $27000 to $100,000 for a one or two bedroom apartment. This shift means lower margins in the 30 percent range compared to earlier 70 percent margins of DLF. It can make up for profits in volume as there is a growing demand for affordable housing, and prices of raw materials and interest rates are coming down. In a sign of what society is looking like and changing mores in different racial groups, there were a record number of births to unmarried women. 40% of all births were by unmarried women in 2007. 28% of white babies were born to unmarried women, 51% of Hispanic babies, and 72% of black babies, and the rate is accelerating for white babies and Hispanic babies.

United is looking for a merger partner as its one of the weakest of the large airlines. But no good fit is to be seen. United emerged from bankruptcy in a fairly weak condition and has not been able to come up with better margins. Its margin is only 2% compared to 6.1% for Southwest. Its planes are 20 years old and no new orders are being placed. Its possible that the airline may be sold piecemeal, such as its maintenance operations, its cargo business, and its Mileage Plus frequent flyer program.

Grandparents were widely accepted as a solution for childcare in Italy. Yet this raises many questions about the safety of the grandparents and increases anxiety for the parents. The Italian government is providing financial aid to families for babysitting and more parental leave but this does not cover the costs. Two thirds of India's population of 900 million live in villages. A large number of people about 40 to 50 million are migrant workers who have gone to cities to look for work. After strict lockdown in India to stop the coronavirus from spreading many of these workers lost their jobs. As they drifted back to the villages on their own, many were sent back to their villages by the government by using the Indian Railways. In Indian states like Bihar many migrant workers sent back remittances to their villages from cities such as Mumbai and Delhi. This money helped the rural economy. Till such time as the coronavirus comes under control and these migrant workers return to the cities they will be looking for other forms of employment in the rural areas. The villages are also feeling the impact from a lack of the remittances from the cities, and the government has stepped in to help. It helps with other types of employment, and help for farmers to store and sell their produce directly to buyers without middlemen, and the government also acted to support prices for farmers. ...

People of a new generation cannot imagine that India that they know today could not exist without the integration of 560 smaller kingdoms within overall British India that were allowed self rule under British conditions and law. They made up no less than one third of the British Empire in India. During India's 75th anniversary of independence and looking to India's 100th year a young generation born after 1947 growing up in post-British India cannot easily imagine the critical years after 1910, with Gandhi writing Hind Swaraj that year during a period when he negotiated for the rights of Indians in South Africa just to move freely. The years of the struggle for Swaraj between 1910 and 1931, the Satyagraha March to the Sea at Porbandar to protest the British Salt Tax, the elected assemblies that brought the first experience with self-rule in the thirties, and the "karenge o marenge" pledge to do or die with Quit India Movement in 1942 by Gandhi.  The dominant role of Jawaharlal Nehru after 1947, and that of daughter Indira Gandhi after him, wittingly or unwittingly had the intended or unintended effect of obscuring from view the role of many of the leaders around Gandhi of whom Jawaharlal Nehru was just one. No doubt about Jawaharlal who wore a prisoners badge number token around his neck and spent years in British jails. No doubt about his contribution. Lyrarc throws a spotlight on other leaders who made equally large contributions so that India's young people can get a better sense of what this struggle involved and how it was won by the  people of that time  under the most difficult conditions and trials. This includes Vallabhbhai Patel, Ambedkar, Subhas Chandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad, Rajagopalachari, Maulana Azad, and the young Lal Bahadur Shastri. Others Naoroji, Vidyasagar, Vivekananda, from an even earlier period, Gokhale and Tilak, are people on whose shoulders Mohandas Gandhi stood on and fully accepted as his mentors, as do today's Indian leaders. This BBC report looks at the role of Vallabhbhai Patel of Kheda district in Gujarat state and of his assistant VP Menon. Gandhi was born in 1869, Patel in 1875 and Nehru in 1889. In 1947 Gandhi made the decision to go with Jawaharlal Nehru who was 14 years younger than Vallabhbhai Patel as the younger leader and prime minister who could take India through this critical first decade after independence with Patel as deputy prime minister. Patel died of heart conditions in 1950. Patel's assistant during the crucial period of negotiations for independence after the war ended in 1945 with Viceroy Mountbatten was V.P. Menon.  Mohandas Gandhi always believed that with hundreds of millions of Indians gaining consciousness of their rights even under British concepts of free men and free people, and a sense of their own dignity under God, the British would simply have to leave. His faith in the Bhagavad Gita that affirmed this right under God was firm and indomitable. This was true by 1947. He needed other leaders around him to structure the form this independence would take in terms of administration of the country and the constitution of the new nation. He also needed to bring those parts of British India that were not absorbed into direct British rule during successive wars between 1756 and 1857. These small kingdoms were retained under princely rule after the British decided to halt the policy of integrating them into direct rule following a war in 1857 that almost led to the downfall of the British in India. How large was this area is hard to comprehend when one sees that this was one third of British India in land mass from the Himalayan mountains to the Indian Ocean. Harder still it is to grasp that it would involve bringing in about 560 different princely states or kingdoms into the new India of 1947. It was the task of Vallabhbhai Patel and of his assistant V P Menon to do this. Reports from California show the failure to build enough housing during the tech boom for the average American, and apartments for homeless costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and years behind schedule. The mayor is looking for tougher laws to put mentally ill off the streets. There is no consensus on action. Tech investors people hope for another Tech boom to tackle the situation, yet tech companies are retrenching and face government scrutiny even breakup. US president Biden sees Ukraine's defense as a way of showing that an attack on one country by a neighbor in violation of international law is not acceptable to the US, and particularly in the context of China's relations with Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific countries. In this situation the US is taking the initiative in the war in Ukraine with Gen. Cavoli at US Headquarters in Europe assisting in the effort to repel Russian aggression, and also send a message to China on the importance the US sees in not allowing this kind of violation of international law. ...

The increase in colorectal cancer, one form of cancer, to more people under 50 years shows the role of healthy and unhealthy habits in food and exercise in causing cancer. People with bad food habits, smoking, obesity, are more at risk of cancer in general. It also points to the need for reducing chemicals in the environment as the effects can be seen in higher cancer rates. It must be of the highest importance that all people in America in every region of the country be treated in the same way, not leaving chemicals to be dumped in areas that are poor or neglected- as more cases are seen this report says in the cities and towns along the Mississippi river, in southeastern states, and it shows the impact of trace chemicals of nickel, arsenic, and chromium from industrial plants, chemical plants, and coal production. Forever chemicals can be found as some reports show also in peaceful looking landscapes in America- such are the dangers unless the people of America insist that their leaders fight these wars before culture wars and over other issues not central to the welfare of all Americans in every part of this Nation. ...

It is a sign of hope in Europe that the period known as the "Troubles" is over. Emma Little-Pengelly of the Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland has dropped the boycott of the Assembly. She is assuming the post of second minister.  Little Pengelly says that we are shaped by the past but we are not defined by it. The party with most seats in the Assembly gained by looking out for people of both communities for housing and other basic needs is Sinn Fein's Michelle O'Neill. This is a new form of what PM Modi has called "Nari Shakti" or women's outlook and strength in Britain bringing peace and development to the island of Ireland. The Indian parliament was recently opened by a woman president Ms. Murmu and the Budget presented the next day by Ms. Sitharaman. Michelle O'Neill says we are not asking to move on, we are asking only to move forward. Such are the changes happening on opposite ends of the former British Empire as Modi moves forward with "sab ka vikas sab ke sath," development for all by all, and in Ireland with release of $4 billion by the Sunak UK government northern Ireland can move forward with meeting people's needs. Both Catholic and Protestant communities are asked to work with each other under the Good Friday Agreement and power is shared for helping people of both communities get better housing, education and other needs for themselves and their children. ...

Argentina, South Africa, Mexico, India, UK, European Union elections are taking place by June 2024 and US in November 2024. Yet it is misleading to lump them together. Much discontent is there to see as in the UK with cost of living, governance, time wasted on Brexit, India with lingering effects of the pandemic on rural voters, caste based voting. In India protest vote of lower caste Dalit voters in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, even with government support in forms of universal healthcare, food for poor households during pandemic extended, cooking gas, housing support, clean tap water, direct bank account deposit to accounts of poor and farmers. Yet in the states in the south and east in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, and generally in the south the BJP vote count increased so that losses in the north were made up leaving the percentage of vote for India for Modi's BJP party at 37 percent in 2024 instead of 38% in 2019, losing the absolute majority 240 seats of 543 yet having campaigned heavily for partners who added seats 294 of 543. In the UK Keir Starmer may see some vote preference for Labor erode yet the Conservative record is in shambles even conservative experts will say, as in India where the opposition parties offer no prospects for the future and little track record for making India the second or third largest economy in the world which the BJP has set and shown to have achieved over 10 years by taking India to No. 5 in the world economies. ...

What Bessent is saying is that the Chinese model is to keep doing what they have always done non stop with no intention to change- build capacity, overcapacity, and ship production overseas to saturate markets with production and destroy industrial base of other countries- from computers to solar panels to electric cars. China is also looking at it's very recent history just the last 15 years as proof of its superiority in cost and quality and efficiency in production as evidence that US and EU is in decline. Forgetting that this was possible with US assistance and desire to lift the Chinese people out of centuries of poverty. For the 19th and 20th century Britain, the US and Europe were leaders in cost, quality and efficiency. US , India and the EU are coming back using their ingenuity, creativity and talented workers and engineers. ...

Jane Perlez says China is looking for the best talent worldwide to help write the charter for the bank and to run it. Laurence Brahm, who supported Chinese premier Zhu Rongji in 2001 for entry into the WTO, says it is natural for China to look for ways to use its extra capacity in steel, concrete and pipes to build projects in other parts of Asia, which would mutually benefit China and the region. Paul Haenle of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center in Beijing, says the U.S. lack of support is shortsighted, as the existing U.S. sponsored institutions World Bank and the Asian Development Bank are sorely lacking the resources to deal with the huge infrastructure challenges in Asia. China's Finance Ministry is looking for the best talent worldwide to write the charter and run the bank. Huge losses sustained by sovereign wealth funds. Estimated $350 billion for Gulf foreign reserve funds and SWF's, according to RGE Monitor's Rachel Ziemba, or 27% of assets. Sovereign Wealth funds are either using their funds for supporting their local banks as in the Gulf areas, or buying back stakes of cash strapped western banks like RBS in the case of China. Russia, China and other countries are using their SWF's for stimulus spending. And Russia, Gulf economies that are dependent on oil prices, are looking at possible sale of foreign assets at oil prices between $50 and a deterioration to $25. Only China has a surplus that is sustained through the last quarter of 2008, but this is changing quickly as imports pick up after the stimulus kicks in, and exports drop precipitiously in 2010. South Korea and Russia have also learned of the need to have liquid safe investments preferably in dollars in the current crisis, as they have learned how large capital outflows can get in a short time. And the US is not looking at these large capital inflows from overseas as a benevolent thing, because it overvalues American assets, and leads to all sorts of distortions in liquidity and pricing of risk that contributed to the current crisis. In short the whole situation with SWF's has a suprising ending, as with everything in the current crisis, nothing worked out as expected or planned....
