A federal jury finds the NAR National Association of Realtors and residential brokerages liable for $1.8 billion in damages for keeping commission rates on home sales artificially high. The case was brought forward by sellers in midwestern states and the decision was announced by the jury at a Kansas City courtroom. Under antitrust rules the verdict could be tripled to $5 billion. At present the sellers pay their own agents commission about 5-6% of the home's selling price, which is shared with the buyers agent. As the WSJ report shows mostly all countries in the world charge lower commissions in the range of 2% and the US has the most realtors, many working parttime-1.6 million of them.

The WSJ looks at $110 billion in projects which get financial support from the US government under the climate law of the Inflation Reduction Act. Many of the projects are being done by foreign companies. Panasonic is planning a third battery plant in the US and will get $2 billion in tax credits from the US government. Other companies are from South Korea such as LG, and from China. The intent is to build a US supply chain that depends on factories in the US and creates jobs in the US, yet because the US supply chain is so undeveloped with so little attention paid to it in the past, foreign companies will be needed.

An emergency appeal to have the case on the travel ban to the Supreme Court has the disadvantage that of the 8 Justices on the court the ruling could end up at 4 against and 4 in favor. The 4 liberal Justices are unlikely to support it. Another more likely scenario is taking a conventional petition approach and this would mean a decision on whether the Supreme Court hears the case would come by April, and hearings starting in October. By that time Neil Gorsuch could be on the Supreme Court filling Judge Scalia's vacant position- leading to a decision, instead of a tie that leaves the appeals court decision to stop the travel ban in place.

Chicago Council poll shows that what matters a great deal is- economy in general (58 percent), inflation (53 percent), abortion and immigration both at 43 percent,  crime 39 percent, Ukraine 19 percent, Gaza 17 percent. This is also true for Independents at 41 percent, protecting democracy 51 percent, inflation 48 percent. A majority of Americans say about undocumented immigrants that they should be allowed to stay and 6 out of 10 say immigrants from other cultures have "a positive effect" and interestingly 7 out of 10 of all Americans say "immigrants mostly take jobs that nobody wants."

The monopoly over news publishing in the UK began in 1981 with the purchase of loss making The Times through negotiations with the trade unions.  As shown in The Guardian Rupert Murdoch met with Margaret Thatcher on Jan 3 1981 weeks before the matter was brought up by Thatcher at a cabinet meeting so that it would not be referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. This is revealed in the Thatcher papers held at the Churchill archives in Cambridge 30 years after the event in 2012. This was the year Ronald Reagan's administration replaced Jimmy Carter's administration in 1981. In 2022 Tories Secretary Nadine Torries removed controls that protected the editorial independence of The Times.

German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock says a few rich fossil fuel states and emitters have "ripped" off the countries most affected by climate change.

Baerbock said of the COP29 talks at Baku, Azerbaijan-

China has made a $7 billion investment in road and bridges in Bangladesh. The six kilometer long road and rail bridge over the Padma river was built by China. A 48 kilometer 4 lane highway around Dhaka will be completed in 2025 through China's development assistance. In all 12 roads 21 bridges, and 27 power plants during the Hasina administration, creating 550,000 jobs says Yao Wen, Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh. Other projects are built with Indian assistance trying to keep a balance between the two neighbors. A project over the Teesta river was assigned to India. A naval base south of Chittagong, the BNS Sheikh Hasina, was opened in 2023 with Chinese assistance.

Plan B is to reimpose the tariffs using the Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act and Section 301 which puts the tariffs on firm legal footing. In fact the ruling by the ITC Court on the use of emergency powers under IEEPA law said there was already Section 122 on the basis of which serious trade imbalances could be addressed. Trade Adviser Navarro told Bloomberg that this was a possible strategy to reimpose the tariffs. The federal appeals court has allowed the tariffs to remain in place after the ITC ruling. The administration is appealing it to the US Supreme Court saying that the ITC ruling has unfairly jeopardized the president's negotiations with other countries.

Voters overwhelmingly oppose the tax increase in 2015 taking the consumption tax from 8% to 10%. The Abe government plans to postpone the tax increase and call snap elections in December 2014. Two thirds of people surveyed said they did not see why new elections are needed. For prime minister Abe this is an effort to win a vote now rather than later when the opposition is weak. In 2012 elections Abe won 295 of 480 seats in the lower house of parliament. LDP party officials say even if this dropped by 20-30 seats it would be a win for Abe reaffirming that his economic policies are taking Japan in the right direction towards growth, and extending the length of his mandate. They point to growth in tourism, and the addition of 1 million new jobs. Further action to stimulate the economy would reduce unemployment further and end Japan's deflationary tendencies.

Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah sign a powersharing agreement brokered by the U.S Secretary of State Kerry and president Karzai after Afghanistan elections in 2014. The question is whether the two can set aside their differences and make it work, and can they negotiate some form of peace agreement with the Taliban to give Afghanistan and the region years of peace after so much conflict. Pakistan and India's elites and military need to step up to the plate to set aside differences by looking to the long term future of the region and the aspirations of the people for better infrastructure, services, education and healthcare, so long denied to the region. The Kashmir floods, and the floods in Pakistan before that, recent elections in India and Pakistan showing the clear aspirations for development of the people, are a reminder of so much that remains to be done and so much that was never done.

Investors showed a lack of confidence in CEO Apotheker's makeover strategy for H-P by exiting the PC and tablet business and focussing on software. Three very important point about a soda tax. First, obesity was rated as the No 1 problem of concern for business leaders at a WSJ conference for business leaders at the beginning of the Obama administration in January 2009. If obesity related costs are taken out of health care, and even though they are not collected as statistics they must be significant, it would reduce the costs of providing universal health insurance. Especially considering that most diseases are exacerbated by obesity, and in some obesity figures as one of the leading causes. Second, Centers for Disease Control Data shows that a typical person now consumes 190 calories a day from sugary drinks, up from 70 a day in the late 1970's. That 120 calorie increase, an almost threefold jump in consumption of sugary sodas, represents one-half of the total daily caloric increase during that span per person, according to C.D.C. data. This is a crucial finding. Just one product alone can cause so much disruption in people's lives. Just as thrifty ways of living are becoming popular in America, better education in schools and communities on good nutrition and eating habits can become popular to reverse the bad habits acquired in the last 20 years, habits that are careless and reckless. Third, research shows that soda drinkers are price sensitive, so that in the past when soda prices went up by 10%, consumption dropped about 8%. So a tax on sugary sodas would make sense. The huge soda sizes at fast food places are one of the signs of the excess of this age with no regard for the consequences to health. living habits....

From the National Archives of America here is the letter Mohandas Gandhi wrote to president Franklin Roosevelt calling for American help on July 1, 1942, one month before the launch of the Quit India Movement. With Roosevelt's reply to Gandhi on August 1, 1942, offering his fullest support as stated in his foreign minister Cordell Hull's bold vision of a community of free nations such as India and the idea of the United Nations in Hull's speech made on July 23, 1942. Hull responds to Gandhi' call with the full support of Roosevelt.  Mohandas Gandhi writes to Roosevelt that- "I hold that the full acceptance of my proposal and that alone can put the allied case on an unassailable basis. I venture to think that the Allied declaration that the Allies are fighting to make the world safe for freedom of the individual and for democracy sounds hollow as long as India, and for that matter Africa, are exploited by Great Britain, and America has the negro problem in her own home. In order to make my proposal fool proof I have suggested that if the Allies think it necessary, they may keep their troops, at their own expense, in India, not for keeping internal order but for preventing Japanese aggression and defending China. As fas as India is concerned we must become free even as America and Great Britain are. The Allied troops will remain in India during the war under treaty with the Free India government that may be formed by the people of India without any outside interference, direct or indirect." Gandhi wrote with his proposal to Roosevelt - "It is on behalf of this proposal that I write this to enlist your active sympathy." Roosevelt wrote in his letter that-  "I am sure you will agree that the United States has consistently striven for an supported policies of fair dealing, of fair play, and of all related principles looking towards the creation of harmonious relations between nations... I am enclosing a copy of an address of July 23 by the Secretary of State, made with my complete approval, which illustrates the attitude of this government." Hotel costs are up and hotels will pay $123 billion in compensation in 2024, according to the American Hotel and Lodging Association. This is 20% higher than 2019 because of increase in wages. Average hourly wages in the hotel sector were $18 an hour in 2020, going up to $24 per hour today, an increase of about 33%. This has been passed on to the customers in hotels. The average price of a hotel room was $120 a day in 2019, it is now $160 a day, an increase of 33%. There is also a demand supply factor so that rates can be much higher in peak demand periods.

In upcoming national elections the anti-immigration narrative pushed by prime minister Viktor Orban is no longer sounding convincing to voters. One retiree in a local election is cited here as saying there is no one at the border, that he is tired of hearing that narrative. The number of people at the border from Africa and Asia has dwindled to single digits from 200,000 at one time. All parties in the country are opposed to it.  Hungary's economic growth of 3% in recent years since 2013 is helped greatly by aid from the European Union.  Large public works programs have brought unemployment down to 3.8%.  As a result Orban is likely to win about half the seats in parliament down from about two thirds majority. The other half of the seats will be divided among parties from the Greens, Socialists, Centrists and the right wing. As in Hungary the anti-immigration narrative should gradually fade in the rest of Europe including Britain. The vote for Brexit was close and the anti-immigration narrative helped boost the yeas vote margin. As a result of the change in public perception there will be questions about how much a decision that affects Britain for future generations should be made on the basis of an event that happened in 2015-2016. ...
