A disservice by DW.com to conservative Julia Klockner  when Europe and the US are moving in a conservative direction, and people have lost patience with illegal migration and lack of integration in society. Julia Klockner is Bundestag president and is close to chancellor Merz. She is a senior politician of the CDU, from Rhineland Palatinate. Her father is a wine grower in that region. She started out as a journalist and from 2010 -2022 led the CDU in her home state. She has taken a position on the destabilization of German politics by the AfD party after Merkel's failures in illegal immigration that has stretched public resources. Similar to the premier of Denmark Mette Fredericksen, a Social Democrat, Klockner as a Christian Democrat understands that illegal migration is bad for social cohesion in Germany. Klocker and Merz both understand that the public's patience has been tested to the limits by millions of illegal migrants as in the US. Her view early on in Merkel's cabinet was that legal immigrants have to be integrated into German society. She sees no need for AfD, when the CDU/CSU conservatives in Germany and in Bavaria can prevent illegal migrants from entering the country. She says-"You don't have to vote AfD for what you want. There is a democratic alternative: The CDU."  ...

Former president Trump is indicted by a federal grand jury for his efforts to reverse the results of the 2020 election. Charges in this criminal case include attempt to defraud the US, obstructing an official proceeding, and conspiring against the rights of voters. The 45 page indictment by special counsel Jack Smith says Trump leaned on election officials in Arizona, Georgia and Michigan to support his efforts to overturn election results, and later on vice president Mike Pence. WSJ shows a graph of the series of indictments Mr. Trump now faces including payments to a porn star, Georgia election interference, handling of classified documents, Jan. 6 violence, and in other cases.

How European countries Germany, Poland, Britain, France, and Italy are increasing their defense forces and defense budgets to counter Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its military preparations is shown here in DW.com. Under chancellor Merz Germany plans to invest 5% of its GDP in defense for the first time and build Bundeswehr defense forces as the best in Europe. April 2025 WSJ forecast of recession in next 12 months is 45%. In 2022 and 2023 forecasts for recession in US were at 60% higher than the 2025 forecast of 45%, yet no recession happened.  It all depends on the USTR's Jamieson, and DJT's advisers Bessent, Luttnick, and Navarro, and Lighthizer, DJT using all their experience and carefully using Tariffs to achieve US goals. This means working out the details of the US economy, of inflation, GDP growth, cost of living, to maintain confidence of people in America, the confidence of the working people in America. Action on pharmaceuticals bringing production back home is a win as here it is a clear way to get companies to reduce prices. Permitting imports removing backward looking laws restricting pharmaceutical imports would create the competition that was missing. US automobile companies knowing the government has their back can actually cut prices in the first 12 months of 2025, with Toyota and Hyundai-Kia following suit. This would remove another source of inflation. On iphones and computers getting companies to create a new US+1 with India by 2027 would enable 60% of iphones and computers to be made in India and the US by 2027, The new strategy would be to combine the industrial base of India with the US to create plenty of good US jobs as the priority. Piece by piece the puzzle can be put together with attention to details and keeping overall goals in mind to restore US manufacturing and US industrial base, jobs, that will create its own tailwinds for decades of future growth.   ...

Germany realizes that it had some advantages in exporting automobiles and machinery to the US, and the EU understands advantages it has in pharmaceuticals exports from Ireland and other countries. EU officials rarely mention this lack of an even playing field with the US. In this report by DW.com German and Austrian research groups say it is best that the EU nor respond to tariffs placed on the EU by the US. Under the 90 day pause to allow time to start negotiations the EU tariff is at 10%, with separate tariff on steel and aluminium, and on car exports. It shows the EU makes loud protests about the US Tariffs, yet knows the need for an even playing field in 2025. The EU and Germany are likely to join other nations Japan, South Koreea, Taiwan, Italy, Britain and seek negotiations with the US for fairness in trade.

Ruben Gallego is Democrat elected to the US Senate from Arizona defeating Republican Kari Lake 50% to 47.8%. Ruben Gallego, Latino activist, took a different approach to immigration enforcement criticizing the Biden administration for not forcefully tackling the surge at the Border in 2022. By 2023 he supported bipartisan legislation that was negotiated by Feb 2024, which by that time failed to get full support. The return of migrants to their home countries was not properly addressed in the legislation.

The cushion of pandemic savings of US households is thinning About 35% of it is spent already and by the end of the year 65% of it will be spent, says this report in WSJ. American households accumulated $2.7 trillion by the end of 2021 in extra savings during lockdowns that restricted spending and with stimulus government aid. At the exact time when transfer payments by the US government to households stopped there was inflation lowering the purchasing power and this has resulted in some households increasing credit card balances, dipping into savings and cutting spending. This is what economists are seeing at the Fed as resistance to price increases. Estimates show the percentage of disposable income saved in the US doubling to 16% in 2020 from 8% in 2019 with lockdowns, then dropping to 3% in 2022 with extra spending, and up to 4.5% by the end of 2023. This will have the effect of putting up resistance to inflation and lowering the Fed's interest rate increases to cut inflation. ...

Cem Ozdemir, Baden-Wurttemberg State Premier, with roots in Turkey born in Stuttgart area (parents came to Germany in the 1960's). Cem Ozdemir is exceptional in his popularity in an affluent German state. The 2026 state election campaign was run with focus on Ozdemir, and he did well in his debate with the CDU leader in the state. He led his party to over 30% of the vote. A third of working class voters gave the AfD their vote and it made it to 19% of the vote. The CDU came in second with a half percentage point below the Greens at 29.5%. Ozdemir was pre school educator and has a degree in psychology before he joined the Greens party. Under Chancellor Schroeder he was domestic spokesperson, and under Chancellor Scholz in 2024 he was Agriculture Minister.

WSJ says GM straddles the past and the future. GM's plans to invest $11-13 billion each year for new electric vehicles. GM also plant to cut costs by $2 billion to maintain profit margins as car prices drop from higher levels. GM US largest automaker profit in 2022 kept up the pace of 2021 by remaining at over $14 billion. As car sales decline in 2023 GM plans to offer sales incentives and make up for this by cutting costs in corporate and other overhead.

!5,000 of the 25,000 coronavirus cases recorded in India on March 14, 2021 are in the state of Maharashtra, with the rest mostly in 6 other states, including Kerala. 

A team sent by the government in New Delhi to Maharashtra found the increase in cases in the state due to- "lack of fear of the disease," pandemic fatigue, missed cases, super spreading events from recent panchayat elections, marraiges, reopening of schools, and crowded public transport. The report  says that these factors are not unique to only Maharashtra and apply for other affected states also, including Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka.

The longest US Open Tennis match? 5 hours and 35 minutes between Dan Evans of the US and Karen Khachanov of Russia just yesterday August 26, 2024. The first three sets were tie breakers. Dan Evans was down 0-4 in the fifth set and came out to win it 6-4. At 4 down he thought he was out and just kept on fighting. Fans gave a rousing ovation. Evans says "it was one hell of a match. I just want to go to bed."

Has the world missed opportunities for progress in renewables? The 2022 Global Renewable Report by REN21 international policy network answers this question. The renewables accounted for 20% of world's energy use in 2011. In 2021 it advanced only 8 percentage points to 28% over 10 years. This is important because use of coal, oil and gas increased by 4% and carbon emissions by 6% in 2021 with the end of lockdowns from the pandemic and increased energy consumption, according to International Energy Agency.

Something is wrong also in the capital going into subsidies to reduce prices of oil and gas which are $18 trillion for 2018 to 2020, $5.9 trillion in 2020 alone. Compare this with the $366 billion invested in renewables in 2021 and one can see the huge dimensions of the problem facing the world, this planet Earth that we live in.

The complex relations of Jordan and Saudis with US and Israel, in June 2025.  There is also the perception and actions of the two American parties Republicans and Democrats that have exacerbated the situation. This see saw of relations under the two parties in the US has only served to exacerbate the relations and draw the US into Middle East conflicts that have their origins in British colonial rule and interests of western oil companies from 1900.  During the Reagan period American involvement under Defense Secretary Rumsfeld to support the Iraqi invasion of Iran in a balancing act. And just a year earlier the Democrat Carter's efforts to look at the Islamic revolution as a response to the CIA's intervention in Iran's internal affairs under Eisenhower's Foreign minister Dulles to secure oil supplies, and efforts to find a way to good relations with Iran. This was followed by the Democrat Obama negotiating with Iran, normalizing relations and Democrat Biden handing over Iranian assets  of hundreds of billions of dollars that were used DJT says to build its military that had suffered badly under the earlier western sanctions under Republican Trump.  It has led to some of the migration from Syria after Russian involvement that flooded Germany with millions of migrants and destabilized European countries democratic processes. These earlier interactions between US and Iran have turned into an Iranian effort to develop its nuclear capabilities bringing the situation faced today, and showing the failure to find solutions of everything tried before and not helping the people of the Arab World and the Gulf regions.   ...

The Justice Department case on Mr. Trump overturning the 2020 election reaches a crucial point. For 9 months the person in charge of the Justice Department investigation Jack Smith has been collecting testimony on this case from close advisers to president Trump. Smith is close to finishing his fact finding and has to decide with Attorney General Merrick Garland whether an indictment will take place. Another investigation is also taking place in Georgia by district attorney Fanni Willis.  The NYT looks at whether Smith will move ahead before Willis as he needs to do this to move the case ahead quickly as the first primary debates start in August 2023 for the 2024 election. Mr. Trump is a candidate for 2024.

A bill passed in the House and now going to the Senate in the US will put a tax on remittances of 3.5% for people who are not US citizens or nationals. It was at 5% but lowered to 3.5% just before the vote. 

Total remittances from the US in 2023 are  $656 billion, according to the World Bank. Total remittances to Africa from US $12 billion of $92 billion total. DW.com shows a family outside Accra, Ghana depending on these remittances for food, medicine and education.

An out of control migrant problem with tens of millions of migrants flooding the US and Europe became a major issue in the 2024 US election. Voters clearly supported strong action to control migration and human smuggling across borders.

There is a big jump in working parents taking parental leave after new legislation is passed in different states. In the 12 months through February 2022 406,000 working parents were taking parental leave, a 13% jump from 2021. The share of workers with access to paid parental leave was 25% in 2022 compared to 19% in 2019. Seven states now require employers to provide parental leave. Four more states may join by 2026. The US still remains the only major advanced economy without nationally mandated parental leave.

After inflation drops to 2.3% in the eurozone in December 2024 the British pound rises to 1.21 euros and 1.04 US dollars. The ECB says its decision to cut rates to 3% was a result of inflation forecasts showing a further drop in inflation to 1.9% by 2026. Growth in eurozone was also updated to 0.7% in 2024 and 1.1% in 2025. 

The Fed is likely to make a further interest rate cut and the Bank of England keep it steady at 4.75%.

US-China relations shift from adversarial to peaceful cooperation after the Busan meeting in South Korea in October 2025 between Chinese leaders Xi and Wang Yi. This is how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of PRC presented the meeting- a turning point in relations. In April 2026, 6 months later it appears that this is certainly the case as shown in the WSJ Analysis in the adjoining article. Both leaders have decided that they will avoid any actions that disrupt peaceful cooperation and maintain friendly relations in anticipation of the May 14-15 visit to Beijing of DJT which will be followed by a trip by Xi and Wang Yi, He Lifeng to the US. The spirit of cooperation is reflected in this statement- "China will host APEC 2026, and the U.S. the G20 summit next year. The two sides can support each other in making both summits productive to promote world economic growth and improve global economic governance. President Trump said that it is a great honor to meet President Xi. China is a great country. President Xi is a well respected great leader, and has been my good friend for many years. We have always got along well. The United States and China have always had a fantastic relationship, and it will be even better. We will make both China and the U.S. even better. China is the biggest partner of the U.S. Together, our two countries can get many great things done for the world and have many years of success. Julia Paternain of Uruguay wins Bronze at Tokyo World Athletics Championships coming out of nowhere, she was clueless where she was as she entered the stadium.  "I was in shock. This is my second marathon and I was just trying to get from A to B and get to the finish line without my legs giving way," said Paternain. Her whole family is from Uruguay, her father is a professor at Cambridge University. "At halfway I realised I was in the top 12, maybe, and from then I was kind of picking people off.
