He has to come up with an entirely new list of voters for a country of 70 million, and very little time to do this. The task involves tens of thousands of computers with finger printing technology and video to be used in 12,000 polling stations, training 360,000 workers, and all this in a country where electricity is mostly generated by private gas powered generators and transport links are poor.

Currency trading surged to $4 trillion in the latest survey of the Bank for International Settlements - a survey that is done every 3 years- trading volume going up 20% from 2007. A surge in investing in emerging markets has increased the volume of currency trading.

Russian prime minister Putin makes a road trip that stretches for 1,240 miles from Khabarovsk, near the Pacific coast, to Chita, a city near the Mongolian border. For half of the distance Putin drove a Russian made Lada compact, and for the other half he used a minivan. He seemed to be enjoying the trip shown on state media. The Wall Street Journal shows a picture of him filling gas in his yellow Lada car at a gas station somewhere in Siberia. Political analyst Alexei Makarkin, says the Medvedev-Putin partnership seems to work well, with Medvedev appealing to educated urban middle class, and Putin to the working classes with his informal style and manner. Driving on the soon to be completed Amur highway -which is historic because it links eastern and westen Russia for the first time- Putin was able to connect with local people and working class folk in small towns on the way.

Obama loses the support of financial executives who do not want to be seen as responsible for the economic failures of recent times and some executives who oppose regulatory initiatives of the Obama administration. Blackstone CEO, Stephen Schwarzman, apologizes for using an inappropriate analogy for the Obama administration's plan for taxes on private equity. He had compared this to the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939. Somewhat of a serious disconnect between the different parties in this discussion. One reason cited for the disenchantment of financial executives from Dimon and Loeb to Schwarzman, is that Obama was seen as Columbia 1983, Harvard Law, etc, with a similiar background as some of these executives, was thought of as one of them- but not any longer after the heated rhetoric with each regulatory initiative.
