Infratest Dimap polling institute is commissioned by DW.com to find out what Germans think of the refugee policy of chancellor Merkel one year later. In summer 2015 Merkel said on Aug 31, "We can do it." Costs related to the refugees are about $17 billion, do Germans think services are overstretched for education, healthcare housing and other services. On the other side German society is aging and for every 100 unemployed people there are 200 open positions for skilled personnel. But the refugees who are accepted do not have the skills required and have to acquire the skills or given training and education. On this issue DW.com asked the question whether it will strengthen the German economy. About 51% agree and 45% disagree on this question, and about the same number agree and disagree on the question that Germany will be overstretched providing the services for housing, education, healthcare and other services. The higher educated and young are more favorable to accepting refugees, with those over 50 and basic schooling unfavorable. On the AfD side most people are unfavorable, and in the Greens party most are favorable. On terrorist incidents probability, over 58% think this is more likely, 38% disagree. On the question of whether this will make Germany more diverse 56% agree, 40% disagree. Overall the situation appears to be balanced, with a range of views expressed, and the positive and negative sentiment "evenly balanced", says DW.com.  ...

The European Union plans to rebuild its solar panel industry by manufacturing in the home country. This means shifting away from supply channels where China controls 80% of production. Chancellor Merkel failed to see the risks of letting German companies be decimated by China's subsidy program supporting solar panel makers in China. A system of customs duties failed when China threatened to retaliate with duties on German car exports. In the end Germany like the US under president Obama and Trump after 2010 failed to support domestic solar panel makers.  Now subsidies are accepted way of competing with China for both the US and the EU. The US under the Biden administration is fully committed to compete with China by developing its own solar panel manufacturing industry with the kind of help China is giving to its own solar panel makers. The EU is following the same path. From 200 gigawatts in 2023 the EU's target is 600 gigawatts from solar by 2030. The 400 gigawatts will come from through a policy of make at home in the EU, including raw materials, polysilicon, wafers, and assembly. Subsidies are now the way the US and the EU plan to get back what they lost to China, their critical manufacturing advantage through errors in policy. The European Commission is also changing the rules to accomodate the move. A story of one more critical advantage surrendered through the orthodoxy of free markets without policymakers understanding what they were doing. ...

A letter from 600 American economists to the Speaker of the House and party leaders in Congress outlines the case for increasing the U.S.minimum wage in 3 steps till 2016, with 95 cent increases each year taking it to $10.10 an hour and indexing it to inflation. This would help take the wages for the full year of 17 million Americans- most disproportionately women struggling to make ends meet, working age of about 35 years and older, and parents of small children- from $15,000 to $21,000 a year. Another 11 million who are just above the new minimum wage would benefit as companies adjust their internal wage ladder. The letter points out that negative effects on employment are little or none even at a time of weakness in the labor market. It says that instead there would be "a small stimulative effect on the economy as low wage workers spend their additional earnings, raising demand and job growth, and providing some help on the jobs front."

The Biden administration will release 50 million barrels of oil from US reserves onto world markets. This is about half of the 100 million barrels of oil of daily world consumption. The average price of a smartphone in India in 2022 was $206 excluding taxes, Apple's smartphones go for $898. With discounts Apple is now bringing the price down to below $500. In 2019 phones over $500 made up 3% of the market. This has increased to 6% in 2022. Apple is counting on this share of the market going up and prices being brought down below $500 to build a larger share of the market. Its market in 2023 is about 5% in India compared to 22% in China.

In China Apple has its own stores. It is only now opening its first store in Mumbai. This and building manufacturing facilities in India could be the way to increase its share of the market in India to where it provides an alternative comparable to the Chinese market. This is the first time after the pandemic and the supply chain issues, the idea of friendshoring, that Apple is reorienting its policy for making India a key part of its supply chain and market.

If invested well this $45 trillion could give the US leadership in investment for decades to come as it grows with good management of investments raising living standards and financing the Nation's rebuilding of infrastructure in all areas.

US Airways has the weakest hub network of the old carriers. With continued problems for air travel from the poor economy the airline is estimated by analyst reports to lose $600 million in 2009, this on top of $!.5 billion in prior years. Japan's new prime minister runs into difficulties in improving public finances by cutting some of the pork-barrel spending and making chages such as abolishing the gasoline tax to put more money in the hands of consumers. Cuts of wasteful spending came to less than a fourth of the target of $33 billion. The Finance Minister said that tax receipts for the year ending March 2010 would come in at $400 billion, about $100 billion less than estimated earlier, and this is less than the deficit for the current fiscal year of $590 billon.

Wages in emerging markets such as Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia are rising following an increase in wages in China. Malaysia's government announced a minimum wage for the first time. China increased its minimum wage by 8.6% to 1260 yuan ($199) in January 2012. Shenzen region minimum wage was raised 14% to 1500 yuan, and Tianjin region's by 13% to 1310 yuan, according to Xinhua news agency. Rise in minimum wage has ranged from 40% in Thailand to 20% in Indonesia. The new minimum wage proposed by Malaysia's government is about 900 ringgit ($264-$297). In Thailand the new minimum wage is set at 300 baht ($9.78) a day, an increase of about 40%.

Carrefour's new CEO in June 2012, Mr. Plassat, describes his plans for reviving the company. This includes giving more autonomy to stores to reduce overhead costs, reducing the number of employees, selling its Greek supermarket business to its local partner and exiting Turkey. Unions estimate job losses at 3000-5000. He says the company is overly centralized at the international level and in the domestic market. He pointed to the 500 million euros of "superficially used money," that was put into marketing in the domestic market and says some of it needs to go into improving stores. Carrefour's share price has fallen by over 50% in 2011-2012. Plassat's plan is for a three year turnaround.

Modi cited Indian Railways as an example to be followed by the rest of industry and transportation, and homes, for the conversion to clean energy. The ambitious 2030 target of 500 gigawatts of renewable energy, mostly solar using new technologies, is another promise.  This Bloomberg report looks at India's energy mix today which is 44% coal, 25% oil, 6% natural gas, for a total of 75% fossil fuels, and the promise of 50% fossil, 50% renewable and other non fossil fuels hydroelectric, nuclear, that Modi made at COP26 Glasgow. Just as US and Europe, Japan, China have huge challenges ahead to make a massive transformation in record time, India faces the equal need to think clearly and embrace new technologies with speed and scale, and make the investments early for transformation. A lot could go wrong says Moody's if private equity is allowed into retirement funds. It could also hurt the reputation of private equity funds such as Blackstone who are moving in this direction. Empower, the second largest retirement manager is moving in a different direction by partnering with Apollo and bringing inprivate equity into retirement funds. For decades there is a clear separation and the lack of transparency and liquidity make private equity to lack the basic features needed in retirement funds. The poor performance of private equity is likely to affect retirement funds, that would do better without private equity and follow the S&P 500 returns, say experts. Under the DJT policies private equity is trying to find a way into retirement funds that poses many risks.
