Only by learning the lessons of "normal" trade with China, and accepting a feeling of "buyers remorse," says Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, will a better bilateral trade relationship with China evolve. He points out that every $1 billion of the trade deficit with China, has destroyed 13,000 net jobs, making the $226 billon deficit a tale of shuttered factories and devastated communities. He wants the Senate to give tariff authority to the President, to impose tariffs on countries that manipulate their currency, when it convenes next month. These materials are used in many high-tech devices.The monopoly itself was a result of the US neglecting its production of these materials in the US. In one case, he says, the US allowed the Chinese to literally pack up all the equpment of a US factory and ship it to China. Tom Brokaw is perplexed by the absence of the war in Afghanistan as a campaign issue in 2010 US elections. Especially because the war is in its 9th year, has caused 5000 dead, 30,000 wounded, and cost over $1 trillion dollars. He reasons that this is because the vast majority of Americans can opt out of fighting the war on the ground. The all volunteer service draws from 1% of the population, with the majority from working class or middle class backgrounds. This has an unintended effect in making the costs of the war less visible, when actually it is taking a toll in other ways. The US is short of funds to build much needed infrastructure or update infrastructure. States and local governments are laying off teachers because of budget shortfalls, and the national budget deficit makes less money available for solving pressing problems in carbon emissions, energy, and infrastructure. Only recently New Jersey Governor Christie put on hold a new tunnel into New York City because of a lack funds. Pressing infrastructure issues elsewhere will be postponed in this manner. And the outlook for the next 20 years, according to Robert Gordon of Northwestern University, is not going to be better with slower growth at an average of 1.5%, leaving less money for the kinds of projects that defined America from the Erie canal to interstate highways. Brokaw says, the country would benefit from an effort to discuss what happens next, in the continued expenditure of blood and treasure. The financial system for mortgages and the legal system are on a collision course say experts. The courts require due process, and one expert discounts reassurances from banks, because it does not go into how easily banks can prove ownership of the underlying mortgages. A legal expert at Georgetown University, sees a scenario in which the whole system comes to a halt, if instead of being lost, it is shown that mortgage documents were not properly transferred during each step of the securitization process. Much of the paperwork was rushed through in a mass production line during the recent wave of foreclosures, because the banks did not have the people and technology in place to deal with it- as pointed out in a Washington Post investigative report.

Attorneys for homeowners describe the foreclosure process as a mass production line, and efforts to avoid foreclosure as a fight against a machine. In most cases a person would be needed to read what they file, but in many mortgage firms no such person existed. They describe the problem as industry wide and pervasive- and involving loan servicers, law firms, docment processing companies and others. The big mortgage companies, including government bailed out Fannies Mae and Freddie Mac, were eager to get bad loans off their books so they imposed penalties if the process was not speeded up.
