About 30% of German bank debt will mature in less than a year, according to the German central bank, well above the long term average of 22%. In its annual financial stability report, the Bundesbank provided a warning that German banks have increased their dependence on short term financing. This is a risky practice if a bank is caught short when interest rates rise. Hypo Real estate, a German property lender had to be taken over by the German government, because it could no longer borrow at short term rates below what it was receiving in interest for its long term loans. Andreas Dombret, a member of the central bank executive board, said that new bubbles could form in certain securities markets as banks make "a renewed increase in the search for yield."

Development of the C919 aircraft by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac). The C919 would compete with the Boeing 737 and the Airbus 320. China accounts for 22% of Airbus's orders and 15% of Boeing's orders. Comac has orders for 90 C919's from state owned airlines and two leasing companies. It also has help from suppliers GE and Honeywell. Says Bob Smith, chief technology officer of Honeywell, which has 4 joint ventures with Chinese companies to supply parts for aircraft projects from flight controls to wheels and brakes: "we are not just here to build an aircraft, we are here to build an industry." Zhang Xinguo, vice president of AVIC, a state owned company helping build the plane, says the government wants to see jumbo jets, regional planes, business jets, helicopters, all made in China by Chinese companies.

About 100 Special Economic Zones operate in India. The government has approved 478 new SEZ's. Investment in these zones is expected to double to $66 billion by 2012, according to India's Commerce Ministry. The government is encouraging the SEZ's to increase manufacturing from 17% of the economy to 22% of the economy.
