!5,000 of the 25,000 coronavirus cases recorded in India on March 14, 2021 are in the state of Maharashtra, with the rest mostly in 6 other states, including Kerala. 

A team sent by the government in New Delhi to Maharashtra found the increase in cases in the state due to- "lack of fear of the disease," pandemic fatigue, missed cases, super spreading events from recent panchayat elections, marraiges, reopening of schools, and crowded public transport. The report  says that these factors are not unique to only Maharashtra and apply for other affected states also, including Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka.

The $15 billion in losses at RBS in 2013 continues the bad news from RBS. It now goes through another restructuring. This time with new CEO Ross McEwan. RBS plans to reduce the seven business lines to three lines, and set medium term cost cutting target of 8 billion pounds. Headcount will go down by 20,000. Risk weighted assets will be cut by 50 billion pounds.

RBS says it had a 2011 net loss of about 2 billion pounds. The UK government has 83% ownership in RBS. RBS paid out about 1 billion pounds in bonuses for 2011. This was after strong criticism of bonus practices in the media. David Smith, Economics Editor of The Times, says history is repeating itself now that the Labour Party thinks it should not have abolished Clause 4 of its constitution under Tony Blair ( the common ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange). Now that Labour's policies for renationalisation of water, transport and other basic services are popular, it appears that we are seeing a response from people fed up with market failure and greed in the way the private companies in these services are run.  Profits should go to taxpayers for basic public services and that salaries of management should be moderate, services efficient, and borrowing of capital done at lower rates, is the idea behind this. The Times You.Gov poll on renationalisation for rail shows 56% supporting, only 22% opposing, renationalisation of energy companies supported by 45%, 29% opposed, water companies 50% supporting and 25% opposed. In addition to this other Labour policies of 45% tax rate for incomes above 80,000 pounds, and 50% at 123,000 pounds, as well as wealth tax are also popular. Workers on company boards with ownership of a portion of company equity are also popular. This adds to the mystery about Labour's lack of strong support going into the election. Support for renationalisation comes from the thirst for change, says The Times. Market failures, greed, inequality and poor delivery of essential public services, severe cuts in the last decade, all play a role in the thirst for change. There is also the idea that when it comes to essential services there is no room for profit or owners and managers with huge pay running into millions. When trains are overcrowded or unreliable run by private companies economic arguments remain for the textbooks, its daily experience that counts. Going back to a time in the past when it worked, where economic structures were based on fairness, and people cared, is seen as an alternative to a dysfunctional period.     ...

A small group of advisers and Macon including Nicholas Sarkozy of the Les Republicains voted to have new elections. Les Republicains governed France under presidents De Gaulle and some of De Gaulle administration members Pompidou, Giscard and Sarkozy. Sarkozy was seen as aloof and was succeeded by the Socialist party's Francois Hollande. At that point in 2017 at the end of Hollande's term the Socialists failed to take up working class families issues, and it marked the beginning of the National Rally of Jean and Marine Le Pen gaining worker support. Macron was a minister in the Hollande government who detected an opportunity in the loss of support for both Sarkozy's Les Republicains and Hollande's Socialists. He set up his own movement for renewal of France saying France needed newer people than the old administrations and got an infusion of support from young people. Yet Macron lacked a specific program to get back the voter support of working class families as he implemented policy on climate without addressing concerns of cost of living leading to yellow vest protests. He was reelected im a close election with a challenge from National Rally 58% to 42% in second round after having only 5% point margin over Le Pen in first round, with help from the left vote. Macron spent the first two years of second term fighting the unions and labor over pension reform, when his measures failed to pass the Assembly he used executive action. As a result support in small towns and other parts of France has shifted to National Rally, with the immigration issue adding to support and young people frustrated by Macron not tackling key issues of working class people decided to shift to the National Rally and to Melenchon left party, and to Socialist parties. As Macron is closely allied with Les Republicains ideology he is looking for away to rebuild the LR and his EN Marche as an alternative in 2027 presidential elections. ...

Britain has fallen way behind under Conservatives Tories misrule. On just about all indicators of the economy the US is ahead of Britain, on cost of living, on investment in infrastructure, on chips and science, on unemployment and on economic growth. The US economic growth was 2% compared to 0.5% for Britain.  Britain under the Tories over the last ten years lost so much ground fighting for Brexit and hurting it's economy. The Tory party is itself torn apart again today by Farage's Reform party, much of it from poor leadership- Cameron, Boris Johnson, Sunak. The result today is that Labour's Starmer says he has a 22 billion pound gap in the Budget that the Tories Conservatives have left him, a hole he says that will lead to Labour cutting winter fuel payment for pensioners this winter.  The US with president Biden is so far ahead of Britain with $1 trillion in investments taking place under the Inflation Reduction Act and $53 billion under the CHIPS and Science Act. Harris plans to build 3 million homes and offer $100 billion to small business to spur growth. There is just no comparison and owes much to president Biden and Harris, and to senior Republicans who supported the administration on the economy. ...

The National Health Service in Britain is struggling under the effects of budget cuts, covid delays, and an aging population, says the WSJ. With the cost of living crisis and the Tory resistance to wage increases when nurses are found turning to food banks there is now a strike by healthcare workers. A former head of the NHS says the UK healthcare system is facing a crisis like nothing he has seen in his career. The UK has mistaken cheapness for efficiency in its approach to health, and it is now coming to roost. It is coming apart- people with heart attacks have to wait average one and half hours for an ambulance. Hospital beds are scarce tuning patients away. One in ten are on waiting lists for non emergency surgeries.

Germany's and the European Union's oil imports from Russia are undermining western sanctions for the invasion of Ukraine. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air says Russia earned 63 billion from fossil fuel exports since Feb. 24. Germany paid 9.1 billion euros for fossil fuel deliveries in the two months since the Russian invasion. Italy is next at 6.9 billion euros in oil and gas imports from Russia. China is third with 6.7 billion euros of oil and gas imports from Russia. The European Union is the main importer accounting for 71% or 44 billion euros of Russian oil and gas. CREA has found that western oil companies continue to do high volumes of trade in fossil fuels with Russia. This includes Total. BP, Shell, and ExxonMobil.

After the first round of elections Mauricio Macri threw his support to Milei. Macri was president from 2015 to 2019 when pro-market reforms led to unrestrained borrowing from overseas investors. It failed leading to high inflation and turning to the IMF for loan of $57 billion. Any time there is a drought or agriculture in Pampas fails reserves dry up as in 2016 and again recently. Macri was ousted in the next election and replaced by Peronist Fernandez. The problems persist with a return to Macri and Milei who was just elected president turning to dollarization when the country lacks the $9 billion needed to convert pesos to US dollars. Argentina has net reserves of $20 billion, borrowing from China of $17 billion and net reserves of  negative $10 billion.

Here The Guardian shows Megan Bergman taking up the challenge of going up the Seven Carries route in this wilderness finding peace and mental health in the waters  with her backpack in the canoe. Take this trip up the rivers and ponds in the area and through portages which are carrying of the 15 pound light Kevlar canoes on one's shoulders or arms for the sections of land that connect the ponds and rivers. The American Indian and the early French and British explorers made their way through upstate New York and around the Great lakes in Michigan in this way.  Megan says she wanted that sense of calm, of transcendence, and the fierce delight of putting her backpack into the canoe after the portage. She says she felt content out on the water in the wilderness with a friend. I wanted to feel reverent and at peace with this wilderness which felt safe, she says. ...

Adam Nossiter of the NYT describes the coalition of right and left parties in France that have united against the National Front, called in France "the Republican Front." In the 2002 Marine Le Pen's father made it to the second round of the presidential election, but lost to centre right party leader Jacques Chirac who won 78% of the vote. Analysts say the Republican Front is coming up this time once more for daughter Marine Le Pen, as she goes into the second round of the election in 2017 fifteen years later with support in the north and northeast of the country and in the coastal south east around Marseille and Nice. Le Pen appeals to working class people with nationalist slogans. The Republican Party of former president Sarkozy represents the centre right, and it is combining with the centre left Socialist Party of president Hollande to call for the election of Emmanuel Macron and for support to Macron's En Marche movement. One expert predicts the National Front may leave the centrist views of Le Pen adviser Philippot, and return to hard right roots. Former president Sarkozy was mentioned on French television Fr24 as hoping to make a comeback by boosting the chances of the Republican Party in the June parliamentary elections, and creating a situation in which a future president works with a prime minister from the Republican Party. As the Macron En Marche movement is only one year old, it is not well prepared to contest the parliamentary elections, opening the door to the formation of new coalitions for government in France. ...

This Economist briefing on Spain concludes that Spain has achieved much since the 1978 constitution setup the basis for democracy and human rights, administrative decentralisation. Referendums can be polarizing and a better solution can be found by recognizing Catalan cultural diversity within Spain, says the Economist. Spain has shown that it can be democratic, be tolerant of immigration, respect human rights, and has increased participation of women in government. The hurdle of Catalan separatism can be overcome though embracing cultural diversity.

Tim Kaine tells the audience at the Democratic National Convention that Hillary Clinton was in Spanish "lista" which means ready, the biggest compliment he said in Latin American life from his days in Honduras. He used Spanish frequently during his speech at the convention.  Kaine wins good marks for his knowledge of Spanish. Other politicians have used Spanish in an awkward way, failing to sound authentic, including president George W. Bush and Mayor De Blasio of New York.

The Tory plan to abolish the Financial Services Authority will not go through under the new Liberal-Conservative coalition. The plan now is to give the Bank of England responsibility for banks and financial institutions that are big enough to create systemic risk and to oversee financial regulation. The coalition partners support a levy on banks to act as a buffer in future crises, and favor restricting bank bonuses. The Conservatives would tax bank size, and the Liberals would tax bank profits, but both share the goal of raising 1 billion pounds in this way. Vince Cable, Liberal Democrat party's Treasury person will now be business secretary at Treasury, and he favors breaking up the biggest banks, shrinking banks and separating retail and investment banking activities. This could happen under the new coalition, but it is likely to be preceded with some commission asked to look into it. The Liberals like to see less focus on London for the markets and banks owned by their customers as far as possible....

About 1.5 million mothers of school age children in March 2021 are missing from the US workforce as mothers are slow to return to the workforce. Both men and women had lower labor force participation, but as men's is rebounding the mothers are still slow to rebound. One mother in Brooklyn, New York, with 3 school age children is typical. She decided to hastily quit work to take care of children at home during 2020 at a stressful time, and has found it difficult to return to work in 2021. It has brought men and women closer to their children but also made it harder to pursue their careers.

President Trump plans to sign the trade deal with China for Phase 1 on January 15, 2020. Under the deal the U.S. will not go ahead with a new round of tariffs on $156 billion of Chinese goods- including smartphones and consumer electronics- set for December 15, 2019. Tariffs set in place on September 1 on $120 billion of Chinese goods will drop from 15% to 7.5%. The earlier tariffs in place on $250 billion in Chinese goods including machinery and electronics are still in place. In exchange the Chinese will increase purchases by $32 billion in U.S. agricultural goods over the previous levels in the next 2 years.

This report compares her record to the record of Vlatko Andonovski from Macedonia in former Yugoslavia who is stepping down after the US soccer team did not make it to the round of 16, with a loss to Sweden on goal kicks after overtime. A coach from Sweden Tony Gustaavson was in charge of the Australian team that made it to the semifinals. Gustaavson was assistant to Jill Ellis who took the US to 2 title wins in the World Cup.

The full report on the BBC's future funding by a committee of the UK parliament on the 100th birthday of the BBC in November 2022. The universal license fee is being abolished in many European countries. It generates 5 billion pounds that meet 75% of the cost of the BBC. Giving open access to all as done by BBC and Manchester Guardian is still a viable and necessary model in a democracy such as ours. Yet the increasing costs for poorer households can be offset with other ways of limiting the cost for the households at lower incomes. The other hurdle for BBC is to increase its viewers beyond the 60 plus years older viewers as the choice is now wide and prolific in channels and apps. Under Conservatives BBC was getting less support. With Labour the BBC gets a new opportunity to revive its programming and fulfilling its vital function of serving the people of Britain and English speaking countries around the world.

Sugar prices jumped to their highest level in 30 years after a cyclone hit northeastern Australia. Australia is the third largest exporter of sugar, with most of it grown and milled in Queensland. Prices for raw sugar, which is processed into white sugar, jumped by 73% in the past 5 months with demand surpassing supplies in the world market. Prices settled at 35.31 cents a pound in futures markets.
