What is the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and what does it mean for the US in the current protests? The Muslim Brotherhood was started in Egypt in 1928, in the colonial days, by an imam and schoolteacher named Hassan al-Banna. The intent was to act as a grassroots organization to promote the reform of Egyptian society through a greater adherence to Islam, by preaching and social services. Scott Shane talks with Reidel of the Brookings Institution and Shadi Hamid, director of research at the Brookings Quatar Center about the Brotherhood and Israel. Reidel was the Egypt desk officer at the CIA when Mubarak came to power in 1981, and is an experienced observer of the Muslim world at Brookings. Reidel says if we want democracy in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood is going to be a big part of this, and we should be engaging and talking to them now. Hamid responds to a question about terrorism by pointing out that the Al Quaeda hates the Brotherhood and the Brotherhood hates Al Quaeda, that for counterterrorism engaging with the Brotherhood would be helpful to the US. On Israel, Hamid says years of accomodation to the real world has brought a knowledge that the Brotherhood has to live in the real world and the geopolitics of the Middle East. Carrie Wickham, a political scientist at Emory University, is author of "Mobilizing Islam," a 2002 book on Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood. Carrie says it was analogous to evangelical Christians and their goal of sharing the word of God, but Banna also referred to Jihad as a struggle against colonialism and Zionism. Some leaders such as Sayyid Qutb, who was imprisoned by the Egyptian government and executed in 1966, advocated violent jihad, but after the 1970's the Brotherhoods formally renounced violence as a means of achieving power. In 1984 the Brotherhood reached another point in its evolution when it competed in parliamentary elections. And estimates of its actual support begin at about 20% of the electorate. Another development is the relative youthfulness of the April 6th and other movements in Egypt, where two thirds of the people are under 30 years age. The Muslim Brotherhood leaders are much older and hesitated to join the popular movement in its early stages. On the question of the Brotherhood's future evolution and winning a large role in a future government, Carrie says that a system of checks and balances has to be established to ensure that the Brotherhood operates as a democratic party committed to the democratic process. The Wall Street Journal in an editorial on February 4, 2011, emphasizes the need for institutional checks and balances. Carrie says rewriting the constitution and electoral process to ensure that this happens and no one party can take abslute control is crucial. ...

A drought in northern China is shaping up to be the longest since 1951, matching one in the winter of 1970-71. This will affect world food prices as adverse weather has also affected Russia, Australia and Argentina, which are major food producers. China has large reserves of grain and has the foreign exchage reserves to import wheat. China's wheat imports rose to 1.2 million tons in 2010, according to Global Trade Information Services. This compares with global output of 682 million metric tons of wheat in 2009, as estimated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Because China accounts for one sixth of global wheat production, this will put pressure on wheat prices. The Chinese government has cushioned price rises by asking provinces and cities to raise the minimum wage, which went up by 18% a year in Guangdong province.

Morgan documents show, high-level risk management officers at Chase's investment bank sent e-mail to colleagues to report that Madoff was suspected to be running a Ponzi scheme. In Feb 2006, a risk analyst at Chase reported to his superiors that the returns of the Madoff Fund did not make sense, as it did far better than the securities reportedly in the portfolio. A lawsuit is being filed by the bankruptcy trustee of the Madoff Fund against Chase for allowing Madoff to bring billions of dollars of investor's cash into and out of his Chase bank accounts right upto the day of his arrest in Dec 2008. At the same time Chase had withdrawn $241 million of the $271 million it had invested in Madoff-linked hedge funds.

German chancellor, Angela Merkel's advisor, Uwe Corsepius, briefed European Union ambassadors on the draft document for EU economic integration, prepared by the German ministry. This document identifies six priorities: abolition of wage indexation systems, agreement on mutual recognition of education qualifications, creation of a common base for assessing corporate tax, adjustment of the pension systems, establishment of a national crisis management regime for banks and new legal measures to force countries to commit to tough fiscal policies through a "debt alert mechanism." Under the plan countries will be assessed agaist economic indicators and tracked by the European Commission. Other steps Merkel is proposing are coordinating retirement ages across countries. See the interview with Portugal's prime minister Socrates, where he supports the coordination of the retirement age. Socrates does not commit to taking out the adjustment of wages for inflation in that interview. Sugar prices jumped to their highest level in 30 years after a cyclone hit northeastern Australia. Australia is the third largest exporter of sugar, with most of it grown and milled in Queensland. Prices for raw sugar, which is processed into white sugar, jumped by 73% in the past 5 months with demand surpassing supplies in the world market. Prices settled at 35.31 cents a pound in futures markets.

Google has launched a new project using technology to let users tour art galleries around the world. This was launched at Tate Britain in London. This is part of Google's latest interactive online resource called Art Project. This is a collaboration with 17 museums including three in New York - the Frick Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Visitors can examine in detail certain artworks selected by the museums- Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night,' Pieter Bruegel the Elder's "The Harvesters," and a painting by Bellini.
