China's tariffs on US products could be called self-respect tariffs as US exports to China are small compared to China's $1 trillion surplus a year. $143 billion mainly oilseeds and grains! US business not willing to rely on US labor created the outshoring that built Chinese industrial growth, shipping out technology in the process, that created this situation. Yet as Jim Carlton shows in "Apple the Inside Story of Intrigue, Egomania, and Business Blunders," by 1996 a new German CEO Michael Spindler 1993-1996 had driven the company to the ground. The struggle with Microsoft gave Jobs an idea- by shifting production to a low cost location he could make the high margins to outinvest all competitors with new products-ipods, iphones, ipads. There is nothing wrong with American workers and their craftsmanship. Timeline- Steve Jobs returns to Apple 1997-1998 Tim Cook is hired from Compaq to revamp manufacturing in 1998 1999-2000 - the strategy is made to shift all of the production to China. Jobs could generate the margins and quality to challenge Microsoft, and profits to invest in new products 2020 -   the weakness of the strategy is apparent with supply side shock for chips and computers with the pandemic stopping shipping 2024 - after taking small steps to shift production to India does little to shift back to America 2025- Apple facing serious tariffs and the country's mood shifting to Make in the USA tells the new US president DJT it will invest $500 billion to shift production back to America. ...

Thirty minutes after trading started at the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Jan. 6, 2016, circuit breaker mechanisms were triggered following a decline of 7%. This followed a similiar circuit breaker trigerring on Jan. 4, 2016. This time investor anxiety was over a devaluation of the renminbi by the government. This triggered a drop of 3.5% in Germany's DAX index and 2.2% in the S&P 500 index. Faulty communication and confusing signals to markets by the central bank PBOC, and securities regulator CSRC, also played a part in increasing investor anxiety. Similiar problems were seen in summer 2015.

Poor performance by UK Tories leader Kemi Badenoch at PMQ Prime Ministers Questions in the British parliament, broadcast on C-SPAN every Sunday at 9.00 pm US EST, is leading to speculation among Tories that she may not be around after local elections. Robert Jenrick who contested the leadership election is around says skeptics. Tories have changed leaders from  Cameron to May, May to Johnson, to Truss, to Sunak, to Badenoch, and now Jenrick? That would be the seventh new Tory leader since David Cameron assumed office in 2010. The legenday hitter and catcher of the New York Yankees Yogi Berra (1925-2015) dies in New Jersey at the age of 90. His many popular sayings, including the one " It aint over, till its over," and "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." He was born in St. Louis to a family of immigrants from Northern Italy. In his best year with the Yankees in 1950 he had 124 runs batted in and 116 runs scored. He was MVP in 1951, 1954 and 1955, and was part of the team that was the rival for the Brooklyn Dodgers between 1947 to 1956. As a catcher he played Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, the only no-hitter in World Series history, which was played against Brooklyn Dodgers. He became a loved figure in American life with his wit and sayings, his skills in the game, and his integrity. Between 1963-1974 he served as manager and coach for the Yankees and the New York Mets, and later coached for the Houston Astros in the eighties.

Brazilians turn to pawn shops lending by government owned bank Caixa, in a regulated portion of the lending industry, as credit card rates increase. Brazil experienced a huge surge in credit card debt in the years when consumer loans were freely made in the last decade. Between 2004 and 2014, consumer credit in Brazil increased 658% to $297 bilion, according to the National Association of Executives in Finance, Administration and Accounting. Central bank figures show 6.7% of personal bank loans and 26.3% of credit card accounts being in default. As in Turkey much of the country's growth was fueled by increased spending and consumer credit. The credit binge and the lower revenues from a decline in commodity prices is leading to slow growth and a stagnant economy.

Tunku Varadarajan's interview with comedian Bill Maher. Democrats are now the upper class country club sort they were not during the FDR period with all the Silicon Valley and elite schools wanting to be a part of it, leaving the uncouth less literate to the formerly country club Republicans.  Maher cites Seth Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat who says he has two little girls and is worried about transgender in sports, and yet was afraid to say it. That cost Democrats the election, said Moulton. On of these problems with the younger generation is that they have been indoctrinated into believing the worst, and this is true he says more about elite university graduates educated in factories that show America with emphasis on it's flaws. Maher says he gets critical messages just for talking to people who have different views. He dislikes this failure to reach out and talk to everybody- he calls this using a special term "people who hate me for who I won't hate." Maher says Democrats are giving him too much material these days. He calls himself an old fashioned liberals which is what some conservatives are today.     ...

The U.S. imposes tariffs of 10% on aluminium and 25% on steel imported from Turkey, in an effort to offset the effects of a weakening Turkish currency. The lira has dropped by 36% in 2018 so far. 

The U.S. has placed sanctions on Turkey and demanded the release of a U.S. pastor detained in Turkey.

The sanctions have increased the drop in the Turkish Lira, with the Lira dropping 14% on August 8, 2018.

India's statement in the border dispute with China in the Doklam region, says that the road building activity by China would significantly alter the status quo with security implications. India's foreign ministry adds that the situation in the six week standoff remains unchanged. The Indian statement also said that future bilateral relations with China would require peaceful relations in the border regions.
