The White House site shows the Memorandum of Understanding on the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor or IMEC that will build rail, internet, telecommunication, supply chain connections from hubs in India through the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel to ports and commercial hubs in Europe. The signatories are the US, Germany, France, Italy, India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and the European Union. The Saudis have committed $15 billion to the plan and other countries will add funding. President Biden is setting up a New Deal style American Climate Corps that is a green jobs training program. It will employ 20,000 young people who will build trails, plant trees, help instal solar panels, and do conservation work, and help prevent wildfires. It is modeled on the Civilian Conservation Corps setup by president Franklin Delano Roosevelt as part of the New Deal. The Corps program will work with federal agencies and 10 states that have already setup similar programs-California, Washington, Maine, Utah, Colorado and Michigan, Arizona and North Carolina.

New fixed rate 30 year US mortgages have interest rates of 7% in September 2023. Interest rates on car loans also have become much higher. The American Association of Realtors says the typical American family cannot afford to buy a median priced home. The typical American household would need 42 weeks of income to buy a new car up from 33 weeks in 2020. Car buying is unaffordable for buyers now because of high car prices and high interest rates on car loans, says the chief of Moody's Analytics.

The New York Metropolitan Authority tht runs the city's subway system is in need of major capital spending to renovate a crumbling and old structure. The capital spending plan includes replacing 5500 rail cars, 6000 buses, all of its 493 elevators. 550 locations have been identified for flooding from the Hudson River. The assessment was released after last weeks storm flooding the subway system and shutdown of half the system. A first in the nation congestion pricing program will help fund the improvements and discourage drivers from Midtown Manhattan.

One aspect of climate change is how quickly a storm develops in severity. This happened in Libya recently. It happened again on the Pacific cost of Mexico in Acapulco. Within hours a storm that was seen as Category 1 turned into a Category 5 storm, and the worst ever to hit the Pacific coast. Leaving no time to evacuate. About 80% of hotels in this tourist location were destroyed by winds at 165 mph. 200,000 homes were swept away. Damage estimated at costing $2.8 billion to restore the region.

China build its solar industry with huge subsidies, the US did not. From 2018 to 2022 the US solar industry suffered with lack of help from the US government under the Trump administration and the first year of the Biden administration. 30 US based solar companies shutdown in a bloodbath and many jobs were lost. Enter the climate law in 2022 under president Biden and in 2023 the US investment in solar reached $8 billion, three times what it was in the previous 6 years.

Breaking the norm of jobs requiring sitting down in one place for long hours that is killing us with health problems is desperately needed today. 20,000 NPR listeners joined this study by the Columbia University Medical Center to see if they could break the habit and set a new model for work behaviours. Participants were asked to take a break of 5 minutes every hour. 70% took the break showing that given the right encouragement people are willing to try something new that improves job performance, mental health, and physical health.

Only about 3-4% of people over 51 have long term care insurance, leaving 95% of the population dependent on what Medicare and their savings can provide. WIth only about 30% of the possession the Colombian team dominated the game. The winning goal came in the 89th minute of the game from a stunning header by Manela Vanegas. Colombia led for most of the game. Linda Calcedo scored first for Colombia. The last time Germany lost a game in global games was in 1995 against Sweden.

Most people do not realize how prevalent noncompete is with about 30 million workers affected. What the new FTC order under the Biden administration does is to ban such noncompete clauses that prevent workers from seeking jobs or working with rival companies. This will increase competition and boost wages. This is another instance that shows free markets were never really free from its advocates since the Reagan era and free was limited to interests of companies or monopolies, where it conflicted with their interests there would be no freedom.

The lockdown in March put a million people out of work. Then federal aid kicked in and there were furloughs. As the crisis dragged on after 4 months the employers ran out of federal aid and began to layoff employees.

Netherlands is the lone holdout and it is coming under heavy criticism for being "misers", not showing any solidarity. Macron and Merkel walked out together at the end of a late night session. Google is investing a big chunk of its $98 billion stockpile in AI with an uncertain future. It's ad business remains challenged. Ruling on the Justice Department lawsuit for Google's monopolistic behaviors in its ad business is awaited and could still breakup the $250 billion Google ad business. Google is going back to the drawing board on its decision to get out off the despised cookies tracking people on the computer. Its "privacy sandbox" is under criticism and Google is looking for other solutions.

The new CEO of Stellantis, the company formed by Carlos Tavares with the merger of Chrysler-Fiat with Peugoet Citroen of France, is Antonio Filosa. Filosa was the head of Americas operations of Stellantis and is Italian from the Fiat operations. Stellantis faces a dropoff in sales in the US with 20% higher inventory and uncertainty about tariffs on production of cars in Canada and Europe. He succeeds Carlos Tavares in a changed environment for automobiles. Tavares had pushed ahead with plans for EV vehicles which now face considerable uncertainty.

Relentless work, extremely long hours create depression, burnout and suicidal risks for those in US medical residency programs. Research shows that between the last year of medical schoool and the first year of residency, the depression risks grow 5 times. Of people in US medical residency programs it found that 25% considered self-harm, 20% know peer or colleague who considered suicide -US residents in 2024 survey by Physician  Foundation. First year residents get about $67,000 a year and have total average debt of $200,000.

Osborn and Gauthier Villars describe how Russian president Putin and his former Dresden KGB associate Chemezov executed their strategy for Avtovaz to create a Russian state owned autombile industry in alliance with Renault. Troika Dialog and state banks put in hundreds of millions of dollars, and Renault put up $1 billion with more of it in cash up front, to get the necessary restructuring and financial setup to obtain state ownership and control of all of Avtovaz's assets. This had to be done because the company had descended into control by gangs and criminal elements by 2005 when Putin put Chemezov in charge with help of state police and prosecutors. And Putin conceded only 25% ownership to Renault as the Russians have gradually reasserted control of their companies and driven out gangs and elements that have grabbed assets in the lawless environment that prevailed with the collapse of communism. What is happening is that the state is then attracting capital and technology from foreign companies by selling them a stake at the best price possible. In the case of Avtovaz because of the highly deteriorated lawless situation, the state will use some of the Renault money to take financial ownership of Avtovaz in addition to loans from state banks. Putin says he has attracted $80 billion in foreign capital in 2007. During the Brezhnev years Fiat invested in Russian automobile factories which became part of Avtovaz. In 1993 it was privatized, but by 2005 it had fallen into Mafia type gangs hands and the state had only about 2% control of ownership. From this low level Avtovaz has recovered, and now is where it was before privatization, with the added infusion of technology and capital and part ownership by foreign companies interested in expanding in a fast growing Russian market. Note that its location is Southern Russia, and its employment base is huge employing 104,000 people. The company is now back on its feet and improving its prospects with newer models to replace the old Lada, of which 736,000 are turned out each year. With the help of Renault, Russians hope to create a large automobile industry of their own. Compared to 2004 when 24% of companies were state owned, now 40% are stateowned as the Putin strategy continues. By getting much better deals and selling off stakes at higher prices, keeping state control of the bulk of the assets, and seeing that capital and technology infusions occur as technology moves forward, this strategy is proving to be a winning proposition for Russia. For foreign companies the growing attractiveness of the Russian market, and the probability that even at the higher prices these assets might be worth much more in the future, makes it a win-win proposition. This is the direction Russia will increasingly take under the Putin-Medvedev administration. Note that Chemezov may take up Aviation industry reorganization next....

Cecilia Wang is herself a birthright citizen from parents on student visas from Taiwan hence her views reflect her position before the the Court on DJT Executive Order.  She says the admission of Wang Kim in an 1898 case to US citizenship is a 128 American tradition when history shows very little sentiment in the American public and in the US Congress favoring legal immigration of any form from Asia (Japan, China and India). In fact a deal made by Teddy Roosevelt with Japan included an understanding with the Japanese government in the 1900's that Japan would restrict immigration from Japan to the US. Throughout the period 1850-1960 for 110 years one finds very little immigration of Asians to the US- mostly European selectively in phases after 1900 by steamboat as can be seen at the Smithsonian museum exhibits in Washington DC. Thus the Court is taking up a narrative that was never true. It was only JFK and LBJ who changed this by the 1960's- if one reads JFK and his grasp of the events in Indonesia, India, of Asia in WWII from his experiences as a soldier in the Asia Pacific region- not as the narrative suggests as an extension of civil rights for Black people, but for a deep respect and understanding of Asian people's aspirations that he opened up immigration to the US in the 1960's for Asians. This is why it is a stretch of the imagination for Cecilia Wang to say- Cecilia Wang -"your ancestors could be on the Mayflower or be undocumented immigrants but you and I are exactly the same as US citizens." Even after 60 years of reading the speeches and writing of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, TR and FDR, JFK, of Carl Sandburg's volumes of Lincoln, the poetry of America of Walt Whitman, committing Robert Frost poems to memory, there is more a sense of humility and even greater earnest  desire to learn about this Nation, and of the scientific endeavors of Europe since 1600 that eluded Asia, than making statements about the first voyages and the people who ventured out on the Mayflower. One has to look with awe at the sculptures in Geneva, Switzerland, of these brave people in the 1600's who for religious and other reasons made their way in difficult voyages over the Atlantic to America, much less say were the same as them. It is more about honoring JFK's words in appreciation of his opening for Asia, on thinking more about what you can do for your country than what your country can do for you. ...

Biomass carbon removal at $100 per ton is being developed by Graphyte. The price for direct carbon removal from the air using huge fan like devices is $675 per ton. The price has to come down to about $100 per ton for it to become widely used. Graphyte is doing its first project near two timber milling and one rice milling operation in Pine Bluffs, Arkansas. American Airlines is purchasing credits from Graphyte. Graphyte can produce 150 pallets of blocks of biomass a day by July 2024 for carbon reduction of 50,000 tons per day. American Airlines is producing 35 million metric tons of direct emissions a year.
