US jobs reports May June 2025 revisions suggest slowdown.14000, 19000,  and 73000 US job gains May June and July 2025 suggest slowdown in the economy. Layoffs are low but hiring is slowing as companies tackle uncertainty. Number of people unemployed 27 weeks increases from 1.65 to 1.83 million in July 2025. Healthcare and social assistance added jobs. Government layoffs were 12000. Unemployment rate increases from 4.1% to 4.2% in July 2025.

In 2024 166,000 jobs were needed for unemployment rate to be steady, now just 86,000 jobs because immigration has dropped to new lows. This is important to note for rest of 2025 to 2030.

Also jobs reports are seeing downward revision because smaller companies tend to send in data late to the Labor Department in the current uncertainty.

The prospect for increased consumer spending in China are not as strong as in the US. The increasing cost of living and the general uncertainty following the pandemic and release from covid restrictions mean that the average Chinese person is less inclined to spend. Savings pool is also smaller estimated at savings accumulated of $425 million during the pandemic years 2020-2022 compared to the US savings accumulation of $2.3 trillion in 2020 to 2021. US public also received cash payments which supported spending, and China by comparison had no cash payments.

Nearly 9-10 million Indians work in the Persian Gulf kingdoms. They are affected by the war with Iran. About 1 million have returned to India during the current war in 2026. About 2.2 million of the 9 million are from Kerala state in southern Indian coastline with cities such as Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram the capital. Of the $50 billion they send back as remittances to India Kerala gets the largest amount among the states in India. As aresult this is affecting the state economy. Many people in the Gulf are being laid off as the Gulf economies are hit by the war. Recovery will be strong in 2027 only in Saudi and UAE (Emirates), others Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman will take much longer to recover according to some forecasts.

Saudi East West 750 mile Pipeline from east coast fields to west coast at Yanbu port- capacity 7 million barrels a day with average 4-5 million loading each day in April 2026. About half of this goes to India and China. It is critical supply point for the Saudis now that Straits Hormuz is restricted. The UAE has pipeline to Fujairah which it seeks to double capacity by 2027 from 1.8 million barrels a day to 3.6 million barrels a day. UAE has left the OPEC cartel that limits supplies and sets prices, which makes this critical for the US to ensure oil prices remain at levels that are moderate. UAE now favors lower oil prices while the Saudis objective is to keep prices high.

Germany avoided a recession with growth rate of 1.9% in 2022. Imports were higher with higher energy prices and the trade surplus fell from 175 billion euros to 79 billion euros. Trade surplus declined for 5th year in a row. Rising inflation dropped in November and December. The pandemic, the economic management, and the surge in the US dollar is worsening the debt situation of countries in Africa. This DW.com report looks at Ghana and Zambia. The Ghana currency Cedi has lost 50% of its value in 2022. With every increase in the value of the US dollar in countries in Africa imports become costlier and business activity suffers. The result as shown in this report is the closing of many shops and parts of the market in Ghana's capital city Accra. Ghana and Zambia have raced to get IMF support as their debt condition deteriorates. Ghana began negotiations with the IMF at the end of September for a $3 billion bailout. The IMF approved $1.3 billion of the $8.4 billion that Zambia needs to restore its economy.

Unions represent 10.1% of wage and salary workers in the US in 2022, down from 10.3% in 2021. Unions added 273,000 workers in 2022, increasing by 1.9% to 14.3 million. Only a small fraction of workers in the private sector are unionized, 6% of 120 million workers or 7.2 million workers. In the public sector 7.1 million or 33% of 21 million workers are represented by unions. Unions won the ability to represent workers in 1041 of 1363 elections held in 2022. In Jan 2023 workers at Microsoft voted to form a union.

The cushion of pandemic savings of US households is thinning About 35% of it is spent already and by the end of the year 65% of it will be spent, says this report in WSJ. American households accumulated $2.7 trillion by the end of 2021 in extra savings during lockdowns that restricted spending and with stimulus government aid. At the exact time when transfer payments by the US government to households stopped there was inflation lowering the purchasing power and this has resulted in some households increasing credit card balances, dipping into savings and cutting spending. This is what economists are seeing at the Fed as resistance to price increases. Estimates show the percentage of disposable income saved in the US doubling to 16% in 2020 from 8% in 2019 with lockdowns, then dropping to 3% in 2022 with extra spending, and up to 4.5% by the end of 2023. This will have the effect of putting up resistance to inflation and lowering the Fed's interest rate increases to cut inflation. ...

Germany realizes that it had some advantages in exporting automobiles and machinery to the US, and the EU understands advantages it has in pharmaceuticals exports from Ireland and other countries. EU officials rarely mention this lack of an even playing field with the US. Under the 90 day pause to allow time to start negotiations the EU tariff is at 10%, with separate tariff on steel and aluminium, and on car exports. The EU and Germany are likely to join other nations Japan, South Koreea, Taiwan, Italy, Britain and seek negotiations with the US for fairness in trade.
